  • I'm doing some bolt on modifications to my beautiful G22 BMW M440i. This video is an installation guide and review of the Dinan Carbon Fiber Cold Air Intake, Part Number D760-0058.
    The CAI is a beautiful piece of equipment that has a great fit and finish. In short, it assembled easily and installed quickly.
    My channel is run by an amateur videographer and hobbyist (me), and is all about doing random videos once in a while with content that is basically about my hobbies (cool cars, track days, 3D printing and RC crawlers). It is not monetized, so it won't bother me if you don't Like, Share or Subscribe, but your comments are always appreciated!
    Have a great day!

    Nice relaxing watch. I've been researching bolt on upgrades and this was one I was interested in. I'm wondering if it can be installed without that box housing around it. I think it would look cool with the air filter showing when you open the hood.

      I installed a CAI on my '19 Wide Body Challenger that was open on the top. The company recommended using a waterproof rain sock on it to protect the integrity of the filter material. So I imagine there is something available. Good luck with your bolt on upgrade search!

      Thanks for the comment. My thoughts on the CAI are at the end of the video at the 26:18 mark.
      This was my first mod to the car. Since then I have added the M Performance exhaust and a CarBahn piggy back tune.

    • @TheSwordRules
      @TheSwordRules  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the comment - The tools are explained as I use them, but pretty basic hand tools will do, except for the E14 External Torx socket if you want to get fancy and add to your tool collection. I bought a set of E-torx sockets at Harbor Freight. That said, you can also use a 6 point socket that will fit well over the E14 bolt if you don't have one. Have fun with the install!
      I've since added the M Performance exhaust and can really feel the HP increase of about 20, between the two mods. I uploaded a video of the exhaust here: czcams.com/video/znsbL0DNwSo/video.html

      @TheSwordRules  Před 2 měsíci

      Hey Andy - That was a 10" - 1/4" drive wobbler extension from Harbor Freight! One of those tools that a guy rarely even looks at, but certainly come in handy when it's needed. Have fun with your install! It's not a very technical job. Just be careful that you don't drop anything down that opening to the turbo.

    • @TheSwordRules
      @TheSwordRules  Před 2 lety +2

      Great question - Thanks. This is my first BMW, so I did a bunch of investigation on my own in the forums, and heard many positive reports from buyers of this CAI. They are all about the same price, but the Dinan product has a great reputation that comes with it.
      It was designed by the engineers at Dinan for the 2019-2022 M240i/M340i/M440i. The company was formerly owned by Steve Dinan, he sold it back in 2013. Yet, Steve's new company sells this CAI from his new company called CarBahn. Evidently Steve approves of it and that is part of the reputation.
      The fit and finish of this unit is absolutely perfect and I would not have hesitated to send it back if it was not spot on.

    • @TheSwordRules
      @TheSwordRules  Před 2 lety +1

      I bought it directly from the Dinan website - COLD AIR INTAKE; G2x M440i Part # D760-0058.
      Don't be surprised when you get the receipt and shipping notices from Holley Corp. Holley bought Dinan from Steve Dinan, and owns probably half of the performance and hot rodding manufacturers now.
      Steve Dinan has a new company called CarBahn and he also sells the same Dinan CAI for our cars at his store.

    Any updates on the sound with the intake?

    • @TheSwordRules
      @TheSwordRules  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the comment Justin! My bad not updating... I just got my neighbor in the car with me yesterday. As you may know, the BMWs are well insulated to outside sounds, so he could not hear the CAI on the first run with the windows up (40 degrees F here). So we rolled down the windows and he did hear the intake with a bit of whistle, but only until the wind noise overpowers it. He did not hear anything in the cabin. I have the exhaust noise from the stereo disabled.
      As I mentioned, I have hearing damage in the upper, higher frequency regions, so all I can hear is my wonderful new M Performance exhaust. I did get the new exhaust on the car last week and it makes a huge difference, despite those that say it makes little sound difference! The exhaust note is lower in frequency and noticeably louder in Sport mode, but not obnoxious. It also has more audible pops and burbles, which is usually from a tune, but maybe they are more noticeable because of the increased flow and loudness compared to the stock exhaust. It's spot on for me. Comfort and Eco Pro are still nice and quiet with the valve closed, great for cruising and just barely louder than stock (a real little bit).
      I've had plenty of muscle cars and still have a Corvette that I made considerably louder with an X or H-pipe and high flow cat back. A loud, in your face exhaust fits those cars well, but in my opinion, a BMW has too much class to be heard 4 blocks away. I have some time this weekend and hope that I can get some audio clips from my bumper mic to post on my channel. Stay tuned for that!

      I forgot to mention that I can feel the additional power from the claimed ~10 hp gain from the Dinan CAI and the claimed ~10 hp gain from the M Performance exhaust. I can feel a 20 hp bump.

    • @TheSwordRules
      @TheSwordRules  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes sir - I bought it for my wife as a Christmas present a couple years ago. She likes it, but doesn't love it, even though she's always wanted her own Corvette. We have thought about selling it, but it is such a fun car.
      I bought it from an elderly gentlemen that had it for 16 years, well taken care of. It came with a SuperChip tuner dongle and I believe it has a slightly more aggressive bump stick. The acceleration is on par with the C6 Grand Sport that I had and straight line speed approaches the speed of my C7 Grand Sport up to about 60. Good tires on the 19/20 staggered set up too, great traction, but yet I can hoon it through the roundabouts easily with a little throttle blip.
      I did a BUNCH of work on it and that's probably why I'm reluctant to sell. I've taken it up a notch with a Borla X Pipe and cat back exhaust. I replaced the console and put in a Boss touch screen stereo with a backup camera. New anti-sway bar end links and bushings. K&N CAI also to let it breath. New foam and power seat guides for the driver seat. PowerStop brake pads too. New glass roof and top seals too! Jeez, now that I've listed what I can remember, I really don't want to sell it! :)

    • @DadsGarageDIY
      @DadsGarageDIY Před 2 lety +1

      @@TheSwordRules If you were going to sell it prices are probably as high as they will get. It seems C5's didn't get the big price bumps like the C6 & C7 did recently. But, now may be the time if you can part with it.
      I went and looked at a C6 Z06 yesterday. I'm tempted. But, that would mean the Scat has to go and I love it.

    • @TheSwordRules
      @TheSwordRules  Před 2 lety +1

      @@DadsGarageDIY Yes sir, that aspect was discussed also. In my estimation, it would be about a +$3-4000 difference versus the market 2 years ago. Back then they were gaining slightly in value, becoming popular with the younger crowd who were making drift or track cars out of them because of their super cheap power. LS1 power, cheap repair parts or 20 of them to choose from at any junkyard.
      We could go either way. It's not a big investment and the value isn't diving like the C4 yet, so... :)

    • @TheSwordRules
      @TheSwordRules  Před 2 lety

      No sir, not a problem for a warranty. Thank you for the comment!
      All I've changed is the air filter type and the intake pipe leading to the turbo. In order for it to cause a warranty issue, according to the Magnuson-Moss warranty act. A manufacturer has to prove that the modification is the cause of a failure. I literally can't see that happening with an air filter exchange.

      @@TheSwordRules BMW can turn that in anyway. “OEM filter was replaced with aftermarket which allowed more debris to enter the engine which caused the scoring of the cylinder walls.”
      However, Dinan is also the only manufacturer of BMW performance parts that is offered through the BMW dealership network so it’s safe to assume you’ll be completely fine if you stick with Dinan.

    • @TheSwordRules
      @TheSwordRules  Před 2 lety

      @@FlokiTheDogo agree and thank you for the comment - All OEMs can spin it their way, right?
      At that point, or maybe even before that point, my dealership has my back. If they allowed corporate BMW to void my warranty for a Dinan air filter, recommended by my salesperson, they know that I'd never be back for another purchase at any of their 33 different OEM dealerships (Bergstrom Automotive, Wisconsin).
      Additionally, if anyone uses a dealership that does not have their back with a $60-70,000 or more automobile purchase, my advice would be to find a new dealership.
