- NBA teams are breaking offensive records each season. This year, it's the Boston Celtics. But there's actually a team in Europe with a better offensive rating. Paris Basketball just won the EuroCup, concluding a season for ages. In this video, BasketNews' Augustas Suliauskas analyzes how Finnish head coach Tuomas Iisalo managed to create the world's best offense by using all the modern tricks, while having his team play at an incredible speed.

As an American, this guy and Obradovic are my favorite coaches. Also, this is my favorite basketball channel on CZcams.
Zelijko Obradovic is the master in European basketball.
Tuomas Iisalo is my new favorite coach to watch button here

Europeans can only get clout by mentioning the nba because they know it’s better lol
European basketball = team tactics > individual talent
NBA = individual talent > team tactics.
Both are at their peak of their respective approaches, and I think that’s beautiful.
That’s because the individual skill in the NBA means they can take the tough shots and handle the ball in a way that gets the job done.
@@remulsive9558 Ok man
While in general your statement is true, the actions you see in this clip are used by many NBA teams. i think the difference between Euroleague offense and NBA offense is not as big as people believe it is. The Utah Jazz for example use all the actions mentioned in this clip most of the time.
@@liekegerritsen1620 True, however the approach is totally different. Also, the main difference is, NBA players (most of the time) have a creative liberty to play as they see fit, especially in transition, fast paced games and/or blow out games. In Europe more players get involved in the action, in general, and 80% of the plays are directed by the coach. In the NBA, traditionally, teams that showcase the most ball movement and switches, tend to win championships. You can look at the Spurs and the dominant Warriors as an example, they had some of the highest per possession passes in NBA history. Especially 2014 Spurs, are arguably the best basketball team ever, statistically. Another differentiating factor are the rules, making it very difficult to play a more American style under FIBA rules. It could be possible, if the court was larger and the 3pt line further back, that europeans would try to iso a bit more often. Lastly, I'd just want to point out, that in Europe, when two teams clash it's not Super Star player agains Super Star, it's more like one coach's tactic against the other's, and their presence is very much highlighted. Which still happens in the NBA, but it's not the standard case.
Its kinda funny that europeans made an entire ruleset and asked the world to follow it for international tournaments.
Furthermore he seems like a really interesting and nice guy. He told with honesty in a recent interview that he was frustrated about his own basketball career, as he doesn't managed to fulfill his potential. It probably fuels his passion for the game and his proximity with his players.
A great listen, absolutely. His post-game press conferences or simply interviews are worth a look.
God damn this coach is so smart. And its not easy to dig into all his tricks without high level basketball IQ, so big credit for this guy doing the analysis 🫡
thanks man! really an amazing coach to analyze
It shows how important the Big Guy Leon Kratzer is!! Looks like an assist ;)
by simply running by or changing the angle of the screen. we should have screen assist counted in Europe as well
I saw him 2 years ago in Bonn, great guy and he brought the BCL Trophy to Germany. He is a hard coach, but great to watch! Selfish players got no chance in his system
happy he is quickly climbing the coaching ladder. absolutely well deserved
I live in Bonn and I loved watching the Telekom Baskets when he coached them. It's really sad how not a single player stayed after last season :(
@gubblfisch350
I heard there were more players asking Tuomas to take them with him than the Paris team finally ended up taking. I guess they liked to play for him.
I really like this coach. Not only his strategies look smart, he is also a great recruiter. Having the right players is like 80% of success.
Tuomas is my guy, talked to him a lot in Bonn, he is awesome
Hey Augis, make an analysis of Paris' defense too. Iisalo has said multpile times that while their offense gets the most attention, he himself considers defense to be the cornerstone of their success.
That's true. They have some great defensive concepts that are quite new in Europe and have been working efficiently. Those transition opportunities don't come alone
I went to school with TJ Shorts. The guy is a certified stud
Love this stuff. Keep it coming!
What a great breakdown! I love how they play, everything is lined up: their aggressive team defense, relentless transition game, advantage creation, off ball movement, play against the closeout, the tagging on the offensive glass leading to aggressive full court pressure, and then we start over again. Just a never ending 40 minute circle of aggressiveness and pressure! And subbing players after 3 minutes to keep everyone fresh.
He was also very respected as a point guard in finnish league
00:25 "They do it against any lower competitoion" - May, but they did it against a WAY harder defense!"
TORILLE🎉 🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮
Thanks for this analysis. Was great joy to watch it and would also love to see a breakdown of their defense.
thanks a lot! they do some interesting things there as well
Great breakdown Augustus. Very interesting. I like the fast pace without it just being jacking up 3 pointers
thanks a lot. they play fast but they do it so eloquently, it's so mesmerizing to watch. I love how everyone is bought in at 100%, haven't seen such sprinting on a basketball court for a long time. hard work really paid off for them as this takes hours in practices to pull off
@@AugustasSuliauskas Agreed
hello mate ! a great video and analysis you got there. good job.
Can you name the programme you are running to make the clip?
bro DEFINITELY watches "Mind the game"
Great analysis. Although I'm not a huge fan of clubs popping out of nowhere in sports, it will be interesting to see how their game will translate in the Euroleague.
thanks. hope the Paris project is here to stay and build a respectable team in a huge European city
Thats some quality content 🔥🔥🔥
thanks!
NBA type of stuff! Impressing! Gortat screens are SO useful and so underrated in Europe!
thank you!
Next season will be very interesting
can't wait to see Paris shake things up with this style in EL
Great breakdown. I think you forgot about one important aspect. Their tagging up that leads to many 2nd chance opportunities.
thanks. haha, yes i honestly could have talked about their play for 30 minutes. love a lot of things Paris are doing defensively as well. decided to highlight these in 10 mins, but definitely a lot more to uncover there. tagging up, hedge and plug PnR defense that's quite unseen in europe
This looks like motion offense on crack, I love it. Not a single moment where all players are standing still.
yep, mesmerizing to watch, honestly
Pretty impressive...i still have some doubts how this will work in a full season with the top Euro League teams especially those that focus a lot on their team defense.....still I have to agree this is some fresh air into basketball tactics
Yes. They have to improve their roster with summer, that's for sure. But it will be really interesting to see in EuroLeague, which is one of the slowest competitions on the planet
When they catch the ball each players push the ball as quickly as possible toward the other basket.
All players are always in movement and they respect the space.
Players respect the direct play line in face the basket and at 45° in each side.
The problem of the others team is they do not organize their defense enough quickly. They do not press the guy who is in control of the ball.
So Paris impose their rhythm.
On the other way the opponents team incur instead of impose their defense style to paris.
I would be curious to see one training of Paris.
Me too. I think they have a rule where they must start the possession at halfcourt at at least 20 seconds on shot clock. Of course, a lot of others rules, but just add to your point about speed
The beauty of basketball
Amazing content, thanks. Still not convinced on whether they will be a serious contender in Euroleague tho. Those offensive tactics can easily be defended by athletic physical teams. Also we’ll see if Shorts is good enough to succeed in EL as well - Larkin dominated EL for a while with a similar style but we’ll see. Overall - I’m not so sure if they are as good as they are presented in the content :)
5:43 its Ward
fun fact…Bonn wins with Iisalo die BCL. The Paris Project is good for Euroleague.
Don't compare tuna to caviar
@@orelco5221 you mean Bonn is the fish and Paris just the eggs of Bonn, weird.
@timonaismith I meant that you can be good in the BCL champion league...but isn't Euroleague...
The coaches the player the defense...it's in other level he didn't invented new offense...it's just good for the roster he have...they will face with atmosphere that they never have experienced...with pressure...
They have to make a playoff to stay in the league and I don't think it's going to happen let's be real...
@@orelco5221 true
I LOVE seeing this coach getting his well deserved recognition. Paris basketball is a fun team to watch, always firing all cylinders and super intense. Their future is bright!
I feel like they may struggle with size in euroleague and tighter defense. It will be fun to see them though, although i feel they will not be really a contender, even if they have the best attack in next years euroleague.
Fun fact: Tuomas often said on press conferences, that he learned a lot from Rodrigo Pastores Playbook (current Chemnitz Trainer). Also keep an eye on him 😉
thanks, I'll have to check it out!
I'd like to see sources for that. Iisalo quotes Aito Garcia Reneses and Pedro Martinez as coaches he studied extensively. Rodrigo is a good defensive coach but his offense has always been below average long term (low offensive ratings, high turnover rates).
Who knew moving with NBA spacing was so revolutionary...
You can tell this guy was onto something with Bonn beating Unicaja in Malaga to win the Champions League
Well deserved with the amount of work that's being done here
I would like to see these plays against elite EL defenders. But they look good.
will be interesting to see if this translates into the Euroleague which I highly doubt
they will probs also try to add better player though
In Crailsheim they said ”you can’t win with this style of basketball” they won. They said “this style doesn’t work in the playoffs” it worked. In Bonn they said “you can’t play with this much intensity in two competitions” they did and won BCL and dominated BBL. “BCL is weak eurocup is better” made eurocup look like U19 competition. There has always been doubters and he’s always found a way to succeed don’t know why this style wouldn’t work in the Euroleague.
@@Oliverr149 💯 definitely need to add some guys roster-wise, but cant see why it can't work in EL
Back to back Champions League and Eurocup titles with two different clubs... Euroleague triumph next?
fun fact i was with tuomas in rer A 😍😍
Hopefully LDN can win the eurocup next season
How they play D with shorts
What new players will you pick for Paris ?
Denver Nuggets- only NBA team that plays with European fundamentals
This offense reminds me of the Pacers’
much weaker competition?? well i remember Lakers with Koby NBA champions traveled to europe to play against Euroleague champions and they lost twice. Last time i checked Jokic and Luka dominating the NBA and they was Euroleague players, so not so sure if it is much weaker competition anymore
Beautiful basketball, it looks a lot like what the Utah Jazz have been running under Will Hardy in the last 2 years. And especially with the high pace this looks a lot like modern NBA basketball (or it's the other way around, my point is, they use the same principles). Just check these 2 videos about the Jazz offense: czcams.com/video/FkbbhowRAVY/video.html czcams.com/video/WiTOhdkyNDI/video.html
We also have a video about Utah's offense in this video here: czcams.com/video/m4bV0B2yVOg/video.html
I'd rather see Paris in Euroleague instead ALBA. Interestesting team which won without underpaing players, not a sugar daddy toy and have ambitions to in Europe when ALBA doesn't give a shit👍
Although Alba is a relatively young team, they are considered one of the traditional German representatives. A team win 11 championships and a European trophy with a lot of fans is far more appealing for Euroleague fans than Paris who have a 5 year history and literally were created out of thin air by an actual sugar daddy. I get the hype coming from non traditional Euroleague fans, especially Americans, but France already has historical teams to represent them like ASVEL and Limoges.
@@clockworkfrustration Tradition/history unfortunately means nothing when the club and staff are low-performing. The competition is much better with an exciting team like this Paris version rather than ASVEL or Limoges with their years of mismanagement.
bus idomu ana zet eurolygoi
It will be fun watching Paris hit a wall next year in Euroleague.
Did you agree that next American mvp will be after 7-10 years ?
Dude there is faster, athletic guards in the Euroleague...isn't the same defense like in BCL...and BTW they coach his listening to the opponents timeouts and said that this is legit...I don't like that it's like to hide camera in the locker room it's dirty...my opinion...
Just that you will be sure the Euroleague teams would make then regret that they are in the Euroleague....
Don’t hate the player hate the game. If rules allow watching opponent timeouts then why not watch them? Also it’s been a year get over it..
And muricans think France don’t have any guard… Just imagine that team now:
Rudy
Wemby
Batum
Hifi
Fournier, or Heurtel
Risacher
Sarr
Salaun
Bilal
Poirier
Good luck team USA 😂
I don’t think so - Pini Garson winning in 2001-2004-and 2005 was 20-30 years a head in his mind that now every team adapted is ideology♟️🧠🎤
Damn Basketnews is really adopting the clickbait strategy lately.. love the channel though it's all good 😊
17th place next season into Euroleague (y)
Higher
@@AugustasSuliauskas Ok, 16. :D
@@rapolaszinevicius :D nu priklauso kiek pasistiprins, bet norisi tikėti, kad pavyks jiems šviežių gūsių šiek tiek į EL įpūsti daugiau
LOL NBA living rent free in their head as usual.
They played in Eurocup that is this year somehow weaker than FIBA Champions League. Not saying hes not great coach or they not good team, but u have to take everything into consideration.
I did actually say it. It doesnt make their accomplishments less impressive.
This aint happening in euroleague😅
Eurocup has a very low level.
Bro, comparing the team that isn't even the best in their country and isn't playing Euroleague is funny...
That's like everyone followed Wemby's team last year but they weren't even a champion in France. Saša Obradović I the best coach in French league.
Offensive rating is BS because what's 126ppg if you can't win it all
