- What do you get when you combine Carnage and Doctor Octopus together? You get MONSTER OCK. This abomination made it's appearance in this game giving me quite a scare when they played it back in the day. Happy Halloween.

⚠️Spoilers⚠️ Imagine if Insomniac brings Monster Ock back in Spiderman 2 dlc or even Spiderman 3... and it's actually a real possibility since both Doc and Carnage have been teased in the ending/one of the missions. Can you imagine Monster Ock with the modern graphics? That's pure nightmare fuel

Fr monster ock would be an insane boss, and if they don’t do monster ock then they could do the anti venom ock with carnage goblin a duo like that would definitely be unstoppable
That would be awesome, and it could line up well with Insomniac's take on the lore thus far, when you consider that coincidently both he and Harry suffer from debilitating health issues that the symbiote can compensate for (as evidence with Harry), acting as a "cure" and augmenting them. Given what Venom was capable of using a sick Harry... imagine what Carnage could do with Otto.
a character that never existed in the comics, yet still made history. I hope they bring him back someday in live action imagine

It's also unsettling as hell how he will sometimes tak using Doc Ock's voice. Lile the man is absolutely unconscious, this is just the Symbiote using his body like a sock puppet, only in reverse. They violated him more than any sexual predatpr ever could.

True but I'm not entirely sure if he's unconscious at the time of the chase. He says stuff like "it's not over yet". He's at least reasonably aware of his situation, just blinded by rage.
That thing haunted me in my nightmares when I was a kid.
i played the final level of this game for the very first time back in 2019 (took me about three years of intermittent playing to beat that venom chasing stage). I was 16 years old back then but escaping monster ock was just as heart-racing and exciting in 2019 as it likely was for any kid playing this for the first time back in 2000. It's just a testament to how well-designed both monster ock himself and his stage are. Neversoft's Spider-Man as a whole is a certified classic.

I dont think theyd be able to replicate the way monster ock was back then.
There is something about the graphics that makes him more terrifying, he looks like a skinned beast with robot legs, modern graphics would make him more goopy like actual symbiotes, and the way his eyes look small as opposed to other symbiots big white eyes.
The old comic book style the whole game is in, and the fact doc oc himself is buff, makes Monster ock even more imposing than carnage or venom.
The dated janky controls adds to the fear since ock has a solid chance at catching up.
And the bar showing how close he is also adds to the fear since throughout the game its been used to show how close you are to something else, now its being used to show how close something is to you.
With the way modern graphics are im too worried a remade monster ock chase would feel like a cutscene.
In other words, i dont think they have the balls to make it hard to beat like it was in the original. And no way they have the balls to show what happens if he catches you.
With how smooth modern controls are, how hyper-realistic modern graphics are, and how risk averse modern gaming companies are, they would never be able to make something that feels the same way this does.
I had intense reaction seeing Atrocity in Spider-Man Edge of Time because of how traumatized I was from Monster Ock in my childhood.
These over the top visuals can really stick with you.

Those sounds are forever ingrained into my mind. I'm pretty sure this chase sequence is why I get anxiety when being chased in games.

Glad the PC version was used as footage because that and the Dreamcast versions made you want to get as far away from Monster Ock as possible.
As for the PS1 and N64 versions… they’re intimidating enough, but not quite as nightmare inducing as the other versions.
I remember picking this game up back in the day at Best Buy back in 2002. I thought it was the a tie in with the movie at that point. Boy was I wrong and in for a thrill! 😎

When the first time i saw this dude i was home alone my parents left for dinner and my brother went to sleep so basically home alone.After defeating doc ock and trying for 20 mins after defeating himmi just thought the game would end but god dam was i wrong! No cap i literally peed my pants.
Now that's a core memory! Haha.
We referred to him as Dr.Carnage. I think I kept losing because I was terrified of him. It wasn't even that hard in hindsight.
Dr. Carnage has a nice ring to it.

Man, i grew up with this game, on pc.
As a kid, i was already horrified of boss fight with Carnage and somehow had my ass handed to me even though i played on easy mode.
The chase with Monster Ock made me shit my pants. Then, 8 years later, as a 15 year old, i came back and cleaned both Spider Man 1 and Spider Man 2 on Hard mode 😂.

What made his truly fucking scary is that *EVERY OTHER* enemy you could legally curb stomped , piss in their ear and then Fortnite emote on top of that, while only thing you could do against Monster Ock is to RUN , and also in very unusual backwards view most of the time, like if you were running and could look normally foward it wouldn't be as scary.
If only Nevesoft peoples touched more superheroes, especially Superman. Spider-Man game was truly Zack Snyder's Man of Steel or Icky Thumb trailer for Justice League, but for video game realm, still nothing ever came even Arkham ever topped that level of an absolute creativity and outside of the box and just balls to put in an absolutely badass soundtrack and horror elements, Spider-Man games now? very safe, orchestra, un sexy un risky (except way Spider-Man fights normaly enemies esp in all free roam games) absolutely, except Ultimate Spider-Man maybe.

Although I don't think it would be nearly as terrifying, Insomniac has the chance to use this villain again in their third Spider-Man game. Plotwise it is perfectably reasonable.

the monsters in amnesia or slender man are better examples imo, sonic.exe stuck with me more for that image at the end than the chase scene. too bad the newer versions of the fangame ruined it tho, even the remake doesn't hit the same.

I remember being mind blown with Enter Electro cuz there was a level where you were literally street level. There was even a basketball and hoop you could mess around with lol first game only had us on rooftops.

@@DomtheDemonSlayer funnily enough, consoles weren't popular in my country at the time and I didn't have a PS1 when I first played this spidey game and nightmare creatures. I played the PC versions.
Then I finally managed to get a PS1 and played Enter Electro.
I also had a game called Recoil on PC. It was a 3D, 3rd person futuristic tank game, perhaps you remember that one too?

You really managed to encapsulate the vibes that these old horrors instilled in our minds with your words. I always struggled to explain why exactly things like monster oc were much scarier than things in actual horror movies and games of the modern era.
I wonder if these rugged, old designs just trigger our minds to fill the empty spaces with our imagination and that's where the extra unsettling feeling comes from. I had an interesting conversation with a twitch chatter ones while watching retro games. I made a remark about the old 3D graphics sometimes looking and feeling much more immersive than anything I've seen made in UE4 or other modern engines. He said that it's because when there's a severe lack of details, our brains tend to fill the void with stuff from our subconsciousness and experiences. It's why everything is getting enhanced - beatiful things get even more captivating, horror things get even scarier. I like this theory.
@@saudude2174 I totally agree with this theory! I've always thought these older, choppier, less graphically detailed designs on PS1 and even N64 seemed more unsettling because of the rigid unrealistic movements and compressed soundbites used for auditory effects.

Imo a remake or him appearing in another game will NEVER come close to the original ps1 version. Something about the polygon graphics and reverbed voice from inferior tech is something modern games cannot replicate. And without all that he loses his scary factor. Controversial but i really dont think he should appear again. They tried to do it with Atrocity from Edge of Time but it didn't work as well. It only came close when you were on a time limit to defeat all enemies before he breaks open the windows to get you. But Monster Ock should be exclusive to the ps1 gem. Theres just no way another take or redo will do him justice
It's like with 80s horror movies how the older look made it feel more intensely scary. I still would love to see a modern rendition of the character, but I agree! Not to mention on the Dreamcast and PC versions he looks even more terrifying.
@@DomtheDemonSlayer the only way I see him working if revisted is only in comics or action figure form. Any game or movie or TV media they'll ruin it. But Hasbro or mafex could absolutely make a toy of him and still make him scary for collectors. For comics, you'd need a REALLY good artist to draw him and keep the horror. Todd Mcfarlane or Terese Nielsen are the only two comic artists that could do him justice. Leaning more towards Terese

I remember playing like 15 years ago on PS1 this one game it was very similar to this one visually (horror,slasher game) very very similar to this one but I don't think its that one. It was pretty scary kinda like Resident Evil esque but with swords you were cutting up warewolves or some shit too bad I can't remember the name of it I played it once at my friends house.
