  • Campfire Podcast EP02 with Charles Eisenstein. Presented by the film platform Campfire Stories (campfire-stories.org/).
Charles Eisenstein is an author, philosopher and speaker. In his book "The Ascent of Humanity" he seeks to answer the question "How did we end up here - at the tipping point between an alive Earth, and a dead one?". His search for answers goes all the way to the root of the human existence, as he dissects the story which underwrites that which we call "normal". The myth of our time, if you will.
This interview took place in Järna, Sweden on Aug 2nd, 2018, following Charles' visit to the 10 year anniversary of the Youth Initiative Program.

Thank you! I followed Eisenstein for quite a few years now and you asked him some questions and evoked some answers from him that I haven`t heard before :)

One of my favourite film and now pod-makers with another greatly respected friend. Perfect synchronicity as always - at 46.30 the question of #artificialintelligence is raised -- extremely relevant as ChatbotGPT and other AI 'tools' start fuzzying the lines between machine and humanly crafted creative offerings. 'Anytime you quantify anything you leave something out...' SO pertinent. Thank you!

The section on grief is interesting. I have had a longish period of decoupling from a lot of aspects of accepted, societal norms, resulting in a deep sadness. I think it comes with age to a certain extent., but there’s a lot of loss, a lot of acceptance and yes, grief" But at the same time I am planting trees and feeling hopeful about regenerating and creating more resilience in a previously depleted place. As Eisenstein talks about, it’s all connected, we look after nature and ourselves at the same time, the previous disconnect and feeling of mastery over nature gives way to a pure want to protect it. Thanks for interview 🙏💚

Great podcast. Thank you so much.
Charles' insights are so relevant and accessible. You seem a very interesting person too.
Re your question about 'evil', I always think that Steiner's picture of two opposing forces with Good being the balance in the middle is an interesting one and seems right to me.

love Charle's ideas/thinking/dedication, .... but wonder who he means with "we". Who is included and who is excluded in this story? ....

Hi Saskia. Can you give an example of a sentence with one of those "we":s, and I'll give you my best guess as to what he means.

often I get the impression that Charles uses ‘we’ as in all humans, then in others it seems to be ‘we’ as we-in -western-culture or we-in-technological -capitalist culture … I think I am over sensitive on this topic. I hear regularly (white) people on Zoom saying how fantastic it is that there are “people from all over the world” and I look around in gallery view and see 90+ percent people being white … or someone says “well we people get in themoment on average 80 years-old and then it’s clear they are not talking about ‘we’ as in all humans….

Anyone who talks about climate change, but does not talk about geoengineering , or weather manipulation, really displays a huge lack of awareness. Cloud seeding has been a common practice since the early 1950's. And the amount of solar radiation management going on for the last 2 decades has been clearly visible to anyone with a decent pair of eyes, and the capacity for critical thought. The amount of faux enviromentalists among us is a big problem, because on the face of it, they seem so nice.

What I like about Mr Eisenstein's philosophy is that it doesn't focus on managing the symptoms of the crises of our times, but rather on the root causes. In light of your comment, I'd humbly contribute that of course we need to do something about the symptoms - I don't know enough about it, but maybe the techniques you mention are a vital part of that - but we might also want to think hard on what got us into this mess. How can we create a culture moving forward that doesn't keep pushing us to the edge of extinction? In this regard I find Mr Eisenstein's work to be a great source of inspiration.

@@campfire-stories If the geoengineering and weather manipulation was being done for the good of humanity, they could have been open, and honest about it, but they have broadly denied it. Even the likes of Greenpeace, and George Monbiot deny it. There has been a slow push toward eco-fascism over the past 20-30 years, and like previous Fascist regimes, no good will come of it.
