Rybakina has such a beautiful and big shots, but the problem was she did not have a good enough footwork for covering the court, and congrats pegula to win your first match

Nice that some people start to finally admit it . Very solid player , but she doesn’t have much flexibility to often get those cross court shots. Her lateral movement are limited . Anyways just like any other player she has her weaknesses ...and this is one of them
Lack of good ball placement is why she lost.

@@jukkao.parviainen8669 Indeed but she's much taller. What Rybka needs is more variety and depth changes in her ball striking. She has the stamina to go 3 full sets where most players would tap out due to the sheer firepower.

@@---jm4czit didn't seem overrated but it certainly does since her withdrawal from wimbledon. Most of the top players are quite prone to sickness and injury except aryna and pegula.

@@---jm4cz she is not overrated! wtf? she has had the worst luck with regards to scheduling and injuries. Matches that last 3 hours that start at 11 pm at night. Then getting injured from that match. Getting barely any sleep and then having to play again. Then on some tournaments in Italy the macho na c h o attitude of italians... bad organization. If you really want to know the truth. I think women tennis gets unfairly represented especially if they are tall girls that are not easy to market. Americans have a bit of an easier time. OVERALL. I think wta tennis has had this antagonistic wave of sentiment from a lot of european enclaves that basically favoured male tennis. I guess that is unfair. And even more unfair is the fact that she gets singled out for being tall and strong and seemingly able to put up with schedules that are unfavourable and playing through injuries. More people should be aware that rare talent like hers exist. She is not overrated . Her attitude and her approach to tennis is different. She is just not money hungry and also so adamant in winning all slams like aryna sabalenko . We should be happy we have a queen like Elena. calm, quiet, easy going, well spoken, great for the sport. You do not know what you are talking about she won wimbledon, finalist at australia... no . She is not overrated. She could probably beat many guys and probably many grunts.
@@mindywong3839 Wrong. Sabalenka has played only 15 tournaments this year. Swiatek has played 18 and won a tour leading 64 matches. Jabeur, Sakkari, and Ostapenko have played 20 or more. Gauff has 18. These players have been healthy the vast majority of their careers, incl. this year. Muchova and Vondrousova are really the only ones with substantial injury histories. Do you know what the phrase 'prone to' means?

Pegula is an inspiration who has improved tremendously in the past 6 months. Like a different player now. She came into this tournament ranked no. 4. She is a billionaire heiress but she works harder than most of the top and mediocre players. There was one tournament where she was in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. When you aren't motivated by money, thats when you will fly. She has become such a superb player. ❤

Why are you surprised? Jessica Pegula is one of the most consistent tennis players on tour right now, while Elena Rybakina is one of the least consistent tennis players on tour. Her game is easily attackable.

@@robertmartin7594 JPeg is strong tennis player, but she lacks Grand Slam champion's mentality and endurance/stamina. She often runs out of gas at the most important matches and often can't deal with aggressive opponents.

Rybakina has such a similar playing style to Karolina Pliskova. In my opinion, she’s better than Pliskova but really needs to work on her footwork/court coverage.
Pegula really exploited that weakness today and it helped her secure the win.

She is very tall (over 6 ft) and has struggled with back and leg injuries over the course of the season. Plus when her serve is as good as hers is you can afford to economize a little, sometimes you have to decide when to run for the ball and when to just focus on the next point.
Despite being smaller in stature with a smaller serve, Jess used her great footwork and brilliant returns to get the win. Congratulations to her

Rybakina has been so listless since Rome. She just isn’t moving that well. She’ll lose to Sabalenka as well and won’t advance. Very disappointing!

Rybakina's footwork is her weakness. It's gonna be hard for her to win more slams with that kinda movement. I hope they'll work on that and perhaps see improvement in the future.
elena is not so good indoors!! however, she has not been right since being ill after rome & also suffering with a bad shoulder!! hopefully jessica won't freeze when she plays arya, although if she wins against sakkari she will probably be through to the semi finals by then!! elena needs a good break from tennis - remember how she ended december & started january this year!!!

I love both of them but i’m very surprised of Rybakina not running a little to catch the ball. Some shots are even close to her and she cant bother to run. Is she alright?
Her movement's never been great, IMO. She's always been a slightly less stiff Pliskova.
She always finds something to complain about. A little too focused on things she cannot control . The court was not perfect for her, but it was not as well for all the other tournaments she lost. In NYC she was on court 17. Deserved, and with all her complaining and lack of current wins she is not really a top personality to get better courts , especially in the US. Want to bash the WTA every tournament.....ok see where it gets her.

Единственный нюанс в игре Лены, то что она может спокойно пропустить мяч, не бежать за ним. Я понимаю что она высокая девушка, ей сложно в отличии от девушек не высоких, мобильных на корте. Но Мария Шарапова тоже высокая, даже выше Елены. Но она бежала за любым мячом и могла достать и даже пробить на вылет.

What a great tennis from Jessica! Typically for her, she showed very clear tennis, with few unforced errors, but also with not few winners. Her service game also was very stable. With that tennis she could be nightmarish opponent to Sabalenka and Sakkari too and to qualify for the semifinals and why not even to think about the title?
But by other side Rybakina played horribly. Maybe her worst match of the year. Too many unforced errors, too many serve games lost. Even her mentality wasn't good (she served for the set in 5:4 and lost it with 5:7). But by other side i wouldn't judge her. That's her first WTA Finals match ever (she should've qualified in the last year too, but that's different topic). As we saw in the recent years the WTA Finals players flopped in their debut WTA Finals (for example Swiatek in 2021, Sabalenka in 2021, Gauff in 2022 and Pegula in 2022), but we see where are they now. The real disappointment would've been if Elena couldn't defend well her Australian Open and Sunshine Double points in the next year.

Pegula is good at wearing her opponent down so this result is not that surprise (I actually voted for Pegula before the match starts). Rybakina's defense is her aggression. She always attacks first and makes her opponents run, it not only shortens long rallies but also saves her energy. Once her opponent adjusts her rhythm and make her run, she will find herself in big trouble.

If Elena doesn’t start to work on her court coverage soon she won’t be winning much! She needs strength training as well. Seems too fragile for quick turns and bursts! She just needs a new coach if he hasn’t already seen where she needs to improve! She needs meat in her thighs to build bulkier legs! A little more athletic and there’ll be few who can stop her! Just a missile for a serve isn’t going to cut it. She needs to work on her strength agility and athleticism! So much to love about her! Wish her the best! 🍺🍺🍺

Wonder if Ryba's lack of effort at times is due to her dislike of the WTA's poor performance at setting this event up.
And prize money is great - $9M, they put 80% increase on year. You also get 1500points for winning it , second highest after slam. They have not promoted it enough but if you're professional player points and prize should motivate you enough
@@jesuslovesmebut8180 Building it in six weeks is impressive, sure, but that's the extent of impressiveness of this event.
The courts are not well made, even being unlevel. This is outdoor courts in hurricane season in Mexico - horrendous planning. The courts were not even ready to be practiced on until the day before the tournament started, and then it was so windy the players could barely get any real practice.
Several of the players have spoken out about these conditions already. This is completely disrespectful of the WTA to their top 8 players in what's supposed to be a prestigious event. It's embarrassing.

Rybka would have been better off playing in the men's game (figuratively speaking). Most of the ladies would tap out in the 3rd set with such power. While she lost, she barely broke a sweat. She just needs to add shorter balls to her game instead of hammering away at the baseline and keeping these baseliners in the point.

What’s rybakinas excuse going to look like here? I don’t see any performance byes. I don’t see any scheduling after midnight. I don’t see any jet lag. Nah she will find one either way.
she already mentioned the lack of practice court and wind condition. I am sure a big fan of hers but I am with you on this one. Making way too many excuses. All the other players are going through the same thing. You don't hear a peep from Iga or Coco. I think it is the people around her that are not giving her the best advice. They have her convinced she is a victim of the WTA. Which is really sad because I think her game is beyond awesome and #1 worthy.

Wait for a basher hitting fewer unforced or less unforced than the opponent only if the opponent is a basher either otherwise no chance but today Pegula's job on pressure points was just put the ball in play so that's kinda unforced you can't make 90% of time in the 2nd set I think Rybakina made those 100% of time btw.

Rybakina is the queen of unforced errors and her lethargic foot work and negative style is very provocative. Can't understand either why she gives up points so easily.
It will never happen but I would love to see her get rid of her useless coach. She has very much to prove next year because the second half of this season has been so extremely dissapointing..

Her coach is her boyfriend, she doesn’t have a proper coaching staff for physical training, mental training etc. Compared to Swiatek, Iga is missing only her own chef de cuisine from her staff. Lately they hired the person to improve her serve.

What happened to Elena? It's not the first time this season when she was just about to take control of the match and all of sudden lost it all.
5-3 up in the first with the serve going okay, the next thing you know Jessica wins the first set 7-5 and goes up 2-0 in the 2nd.
Was she just too tired or having a lack of concentration? It was a very long and tiring season and I hope she gets herself a nice rest before January 2024.

@@STRAWYB I followed the WTA social media and they showed the player media day interviews and I have to agree. With the exception of a few pictures it looked like she didn't really want to be there. I can see why she is upset after the Montreal and the performance thing but I think this is where the "leader" of her team need to step up. Put things back into perspective and get her head into the right place. Instead I recall seeing her coach going after the WTA rules etc etc. I recall thinking, you are the adult in the room, yes the rule was weird but not knowing is not an excuse. Instead of being her "yes man" you need to be an adult and get her to move on from the non-sense not pour fire on to it. We will she how the next season plays out.
I love Lena very much, I root for her, but there is so much calmness, predictability, regularity, humility in her now… That's how it will be, that's how it will be. I won't win, well, that's fine. There is absolutely no winning attitude, attacking activity, thoughtful dynamics, athletic intensity and rigidity, character and ambition.. With such a set of today's qualities, only accept, fend off aggressive attacks and lose.. Someone has to give her a good shake and bring her to her senses. Jessica played like a well-tuned machine. She swept through all the exposed weaknesses of her opponent and left without breaking a sweat. If you don't score, they score for you.

What are you talking about David coached Venus for a decade then let him go when she wasn’t playing much anymore. He needed to move on to a younger player. Venus was almost 40 then.

Maybe is time for ER to find another coach who can gave her a more rounded approach and movement and improve on her ground strokes. She is the only player I like most honestly was disappointed when she lost 4 straight games in the first set. ❤

Ever since that Wimbledon run in 2022 and her emotional reaction in the post-match press-conference I love Rybakina. I like her calm and humble demeanor and aggressive playing style.
But I have to say that this performance was really painful to watch. Of course with her tall frame one cannot expect the same kind of movement and agility like Coco or Iga display. But many times she doesn't even try to reach balls that are reachable. The attitude isn't right. It looked borderline lazy, at least lethargic. I hope she uses the off-season to work on her footwork and fitness. She also needs to work on her shot selection. She has to hit bigger targets instead of aiming for the lines all the time. I also think they should really take a look at her tournament calender next year. It's obvious that her body is much more prone to injuries and fatigue compared to other players. I have heard her attributing that to the fact that she started practicing full-time outside of a group setting at a much older age (16 or 17) than all the other pros. So she had much less tennis and athletic training in her life than all the other players and still needs to catch-up. But in addition to that different people are just built differently. With her slim frame, her allergies and her introverteness she seems much more frail than most other players. I think she should take this into account and play less tournaments. I also think that she should think about switching coaches. I know she likes the energy Vukov brings, but I think an older, more experienced and "fatherly" coach would be a better fit at this point of her career. Life on tour is stressfull for any player as it is , let alone for a more introverted person. But from the outside one gets the impression that Vukov's energy makes it even more stressful for her.

Interesting how many comments look to what Rybakina is doing wrong - and so many latent coaches wasting their talent on CZcams threads. More likely severe Dunning-Kruger. Anyway, there should be more focus on what Pegula did right. Rybakina did not play poorly.

Yes, indeed. When a player has to do more against an excellent defender and someone who is putting them under pressure, they make more errors. The bias to explain every loss by what the loser did wrong stems from a fundamental failure to consider the dynamics. Ignoring the fact that UE is fairly subjective. @@danielnowak2958
