The painting in the background is by our beloved artist Herb Kane who passed away this year at 82. Look up under his name and see many of the paintings he has made showing Hawai'ian life from the beginning . He showed the Hawai'ian people as they are , beautiful, intelligent , family loving people.

I'll never forget the Ho'olaulea at Kalapana Beach Park back in the day on my birthday when Dennis Pavao sang. It was so quintessentially Big Island--a person and a place that are no longer there--but remain indelibly etched in my memory.
What year? I think I was there. Aku Hauanio, Kevin Hardy (both lifeguards in Kalapana), the Kaliihoomalu fam, among many others. Great song, great memories.

Was blessed to live on Oahu 6 years 96 to 2001 I learned to do the Hauoli hula to this song, and a few others. My friend used to perform on kalakaua avenue at night. One night I was playing around and got up and danced to this song. People gave me money. Ha ha ha.

Aloha from Alabama! Interestingly enough, I stumbled across this thanks to a picture of Hanalei Valley on my windows lock screen. I've never been to Hawaii, but between that picture and this song, I'm booking a flight ASAP! I think the problem you're seeing is that cultural influences have such an impact on a person's ability to comprehend different types of music. In this case, parts of the melody sounded very dissonant to me until I heard it a few times, but now I couldn't hear to the song without them! Between that and popular culture pumping out metric tons of garbage every minute, true talent has to struggle to ever be seen or heard of. Most people just don't have the patience to really listen anymore. This is a beautiful song.

I’m on the mainland, in Everett, Washington. And I love Dennis’s voice! I grew up on Kauai and am not Hawaiian, but have a Hawaiian heart.
In Hawaii, there are mostly haoles(foreigners). I'm part Hawaiian, but i live in Colorado currently. I still go to Hawaii every summer. I usually go to Oahu.
