Gotta love Brian’s Dad...even tho he was against Brian being in a rock and roll band rather than pursuing his academic studies, he still helped Brian build a guitar anyway....and one of the most iconic guitars in rock and roll history too, as it turned out to be.
...i'll help you build a guitar son, but please don't use it.
imagine if brian never pursued music.. queen would never exist and the world would also have never heard freddie either. crazyyyy
Brian was just too damn talented for his dad to not understand that anything he did would be successful!
Well later on his father actually accepted it
@@dextermorgan1757 that he did. Backstage at a concert at Carnegie Hall I believe. He finally ‘got it’.
My Dad said 'I'll show you how to make a guitar if you let me put my foot on the dinner table.' Deal done.
He looks like he was halfway through changing the lightbulb when the film crew arrived
@@FreeBrunoPowroznik 😁
his old man seems pretty cool
@@brianmay7300 👍..we dig u in Brooklyn
Definitely a display of dominance
No one wants to acknowledge that his dad in the video is the main reason behind Queen's sound, considering his dad built the majority of the guitar!
@Naturally Perfect How was Brian May useless? Lol 😂 He wrote so many hit songs for Queen. Queen were all 4 members, not just Freddie.
@Naturally Perfect what is wrong with you, your name makes everything wrong already lmao
@THE HIGHLANDER The specific thing he learned from Rory was running a Treble Booster into a cranked Vox AC30
I think John Deacon's amp the deacy created the unique guitar and bass sound more than the custom guitar. All 4 members of Queen were brilliant. Especially May. The only genius of rock and a damn great guitarist.
@Naturally Purrfect u are on something I swear ahahaha
Brian often spoke about how his dad was so disappointed in his decision to be a rock star rather than a well educated astronomer and couldn't understand it until he saw them live in Madison Square Garden and he finally understood what Queen meant to the world. Thank God these guys all found each other and became the greatest rock and roll band in history giving us decades of outstanding music! How did we get so lucky to be here with them?
Same type of story with Tom Scholz of Boston and his father. His father just didn't get why his Son was so interested in playing guitar in a band until he attended one of his concerts. Then he realized just how big they had become. Tom is an M.I.T. trained engineer.
Marianne Goodson. WHAAAA?? The GREATEST rock and roll band in history ? You have to be joking .

Grew up listening to this wonderful music back in the 70s. What a magic time. I miss the 70s tremendously
I used to get a Christmas card every year from Harold & Ruth May until Harold passed. Then I got an apologetic little note from Ruth saying she wasn't up to sending them anymore. Bless them - lovely people. Got a couple of letters from Brian too in 77/78. He used to read all his fan mail x

Sorry to hear that
I understand, I miss my father too.... and I think it will be forever, hearts and souls. Be blessed, all the best🌸
My father passed away in 1994 at the age of 63 an i was 24..I miss him everyday
It was my pop who told me when I was about 7 or 8, that I could do anything in this life.
As long as you put in the effort, and research, and are not afraid to fail.
"That's the real truth of it all, with every success, there's always gonna be many failures. Success is only achieved by the knowledge gained by the very same failures."

I remember watching an interview of Brian May talking about his dad, he said that his father didn't like Rock music and didn't understand Brian's love of it. Until the day he went to see Brian play. He said to Brian he 'gets it now'. Then Brian got really emotional talking about it. He must have felt soo proud to hear that.
You're right - it was this interview and the question was at 4:33: czcams.com/video/XBm1Qfpa_nY/video.html
Good find, felt like I watched it years ago was scared for a minute I was just making it up in my head 😅
A very good interview. I’ve never seen or heard this before.
I think he was more against Brian taking that path (rock music) since he had his degree and a possible career in science, rather than against rock music per se (although he probably thought rock was crap too).

Harold May... Great Father and Genius👏👏👏!!!
Both men, absolute geniuses!
You are angel, genuine, beautiful and bold 👸🥰😊
How that guitar was built with no power tools is remarkable just hand tools and filing and sanding everything that guitar is just a work of art great job 👏
The Special red is an artwork and when played by Brian May it is ART!
Back in about 1980 or 81 my dad helped me build my first guitar. We used an old headboard to make the body and following the instructions from everyday electronics magazine, wound the pick ups ourselves. We cut the frets from fretwire i remember cutting my fingers on the edge of the neck where we hadn't sanded the ends properly. My dad worked in engineering as well. The thing is the similarities end there. Brian's guitar has entertained thousands of people in stadiums across the world whereas my guitar must be rotting away somewhere in my dad's attic.God bless keep rocking Jesus loves you all.
Did you use an old bodyboard to make the head?
No but it would be funny if I did!
@@martinnelson8382 Quite a feat to build a guitar without all the obscure tools and materials needed and in 1981 there was no internet to order from. In 1981 I was employed is a small workshop making banjos and still didn't manage to make myself a guitar.

Its heartwarming to see this little film and know that though Brian May's father was against his son playing rock music, he still took the time to build him a wonderful guitar. Though at the time, his opinion that Brian should stick to acedemia was of course the most sensible one. Yet despite this, he still helped his son realise his dream, which in the end turned out to be the right course. This just demonstrates the love and devotion between a father and his son.

The Pickups Brian bought from Burns guitars. He did make his own originally but they didnt work well, he got too much feedback from them.
