  • Working and living in Germany (specifically Berlin) as a Software Developer might sometimes be different to what you are used to. What does the job market look like, how big is the tech scene, what salaries to expect, how are people there? These are questions every foreigner asks before deciding to move to a different country. As someone who moved to Germany 3 years ago and works as a Developer, I may have some insights that I would like to share with you.

    Hahaha, good video! It is interesting to see how foreigners see working culture in Germany. Although I’d disagree on 2 things: I’d call Munich the Silicon Valley of Germany. Berlin is more like NY. Berlin have some tech but also many other things! Where Munich is all about tech. If you want to see more Lederhosen you need to go to Bavaria. You will see it more on the streets but not in working environment. Unless it is Oktoberfest time and you work at Wiesn

      lol Munich the Silicon Valley of Germany. Munich is a relative small (1.5Mio people) city with automotive industry infrastructure, headquarters of many consulting firms, a very crowded real estate market and due to high levels of Christianity where super markets close at 8pm. Berlin is the capital city of Germany with (3.6Mio people), but also a state of itself (Berlin is in the state of Berlin) and has - except for the tech and start-up industry - no predefined industries. People speak English in restaurants and venture capital firms have many satellite offices here. Munich is maybe Dellas or Seattle in the context of the US Market.

    Heyyy, I currently live in Austria and I consider doing a coding bootcamp (Fullstack development). After that I would like to move to germany. Have you considered doing video on coding bootcamps? Are they accepted? I read Master degree in CS is very important in DE. I do have an industrial engineering masters. Do you think it will be positive? Or would they look at me like instable person changing the career after studies? 🤷‍♀️

    • @SoftwareDeveloperDiaries
      @SoftwareDeveloperDiaries  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey, thanks for your comment! So I will try to answer the questions one by one:
      - No, I haven't thought about such a video, but thanks for the idea, I will keep it in mind
      - Accepted by companies? Yes, as long as you can prove your knowledge in the interiews. Accepted by the government for visa purposes as a valid degree? No.
      - Master degree in CS is not important, you can easily find a job in engineering without it if you can prove yourself in the interview as I already mentioned.
      - Industrial engineering IS indeed engineering. So it's positive in all ways.
      - "Look at me..", who are we talking about in this case? Employer? If you are applying for a Software Engineering job, they'd appreciate that you have such a degree and it will positively affect your image, but still it won't play a huge role when hiring you.

      You don’t really need a degree to still be competitive on the market here, so don’t worry about that. If you still feel like you need to expand your theoretical knowledge, you can always take one of those official Computer Science degrees from real universities on Coursera.

Make sure you have a good looking GitHub with projects (I have a video on getting the first job) and try maybe freelancing for private clients or people you know, to get real experience first. You can also try UpWork for that.

    A software engineer getting paid an average salary is a joke. Rent is extremely high in Germany and you have to basically apply to a bunch of real estate companies to find a shitty small apartment. European engineers really need to demand higher salaries as well as equities. You're bringing much more value to tech companies to be paid barely above the average salary. At least the american engineers realize that.

      Thank you! I would say it's hard but not impossible. Also depends on whether you have a degree in the relevant area (Computer Science or Informatics for example), otherwise it's hard to get a "Blue Card".

    To answer your Lederhosen question: They are not a thing in Berlin at all and you'll probably never see them if people are not wearing costumes. They are more popular in Baveria though ;)

    You mentioned, that you are not happy with how German government spends tax money, I am curious why, other then not enough goes to education. I was surprised to hear that, because I thought it's one of the countries where you can get good education for free or not a lot of money, at least compared to US. What do the tax money go to then?

    • @SoftwareDeveloperDiaries
      @SoftwareDeveloperDiaries  Před rokem

      Hi Yuliya. I believe you misunderstood me, I never said that I'm not happy, but rather that it's a different topic on its own, just so that I avoid expressing my political views here. But generally I'm happy with how the government spends the tax money, altough it can always be better :)

    After 7 years living in Germany, 2 years to learn the language, worked in High-Tech big-names companies I can definitely assure you are not giving the whole picture!! Since you are in Berlin why you don’t speak about finding an apartment zum Beispiel!!! What about the duration to get B1 which is the minimum level required to get a job !!! What about something Germany very famous with called bureaucracy , bureaucracy, bureaucracy!!, and 45 - 125 k really ?! , social life , weather , food , …… etc.

    • @SoftwareDeveloperDiaries
      @SoftwareDeveloperDiaries  Před rokem

      Finding an apartment is a disaster, can’t disagree with that, but it’s same in any other major European city.
      About the language level: where did you see such requiremens in tech here? 95% of the companies don’t require any German, including traditional companies like Deutsche Bank or Bosch. That’s just from my experience :)
      Bureacracy is mad. Digitalization of it too.
      45-125k is very much realistic. I personally know software architects who make 120k with bonuses included.
      Social life, weather, food can be covered in a separate video, thanks for the idea :)

    • @SoftwareDeveloperDiaries
      @SoftwareDeveloperDiaries  Před rokem

      I wouldn't agree that it's meaningless. You don't call many people around you "friends" here, as you would in many other countries. "Friend" is reserved for ones you are 100% sure you can trust and rely on. And that trust is hard to gain.
