- Shovels & Rope's presence in the NPR Music offices attracted plenty of interest; many in attendance had long since fallen in love with the husband-and-wife duo's mix of rowdy folk-rock and rootsy balladeering. But once Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent showed up, the office quickly lost sight of the approaching performance, as the murmurs began: "There's a dog in the office there's a dog in the office there's a dog in the office!" You could practically see our coworkers' brains short out from a combination of cognitive dissonance and canine adoration.
But, as endearing as our new friend was, Shovels & Rope soon won back the crowd's attention. After opening with the plaintive ballad "Carnival," the South Carolina duo ripped through one of its signature rockers - "Birmingham," during which the pair held eye contact sweetly while singing in unison - before closing with "Bad Luck," a clattering gem for which the two swap instruments (he on guitar, she on drums). The song, originally from a Michael Trent solo album, most recently appeared on a deluxe version of Shovels & Rope's 2012 debut, the winning and appropriately titled O' Be Joyful. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

Still loving this in 24. Thankyall for the music
I think they are just singing to each other, and don't care about anyone else. It's very sweet.
True but if you see their early stuff its more connected ,,, the hand shake at the end suggest to me that there is something business like between them. Great Tiny Desk Set!

@@jjque8900 They're married though...
Her voice/raspy tonage, coupled with his emotionally charged, seemingly sincere trems. Good lord! How could we be anything but moved?!
she is fantastic
NPR Tiny Desk Concerts: the best thing to happen to my lunch hour since food.
Have you tried marijuana during lunch break? It's kinda nice too just saying
Their harmonies slay me every time.
Birmingham is that one song that I literally cannot keep myself from singing along with. It's so catchy and well-written at the same time.
Same!!!
Great body language; I love how they're just performing for each other, and they happen to be in public so we can see the awesome show.
Her singing is as if you took dolly patron’s voice and aged it in a whiskey barrel for 20 years. A rare a premium blend.
Beautifully said
These are probably two of the sweetest people I've met on the planet. I hung out with that them backstage after they did a home show in Charleston, SC. We had an awesome time and jammed and talked. One of the best experiences I've had.
I hope they get to play with Lera Lynn when she comes to the Highwater Festival there April 13th. ("Wolf like Me")
You're pretty sweet yourself
Wow, I found myself wishing desperately to meet these two!! How awesome
Amazing how two people can sound like a four- or five-piece band.
This duo has such a fantastic dynamic going for them. To really appreciate them is to actually watch them perform, not only to listen. Great, great stuff!!
Bless this band and the dog, too. Those harmony vocals and the way they bring it rough and ready is so exciting. This is the stuff!
Michael and Carrie Ann call it "sloppy Tonk". I think that's accurate. You can call it hipster music if you'd like, but these two are exceptionally talented and put on an amazing show.
Perfection really
I like how they look at each other while they play/sing. :D
Birmingham is a classic. Love these two.
Carrie Ann is and will always be one of the purest memories from my many lost hours in Fluids.
Thank you PBS for introducing me to Shovels & Rope:) LOVE their sound!!
Shovels and Rope... I love the lyrics, they tell a story every time they open thier mouths. If you like these two, you may also like, Honey Honey, Shakey Graves, and Jason Isbell.
Add Hurray for the Riff Raff too
Not the same, these guys are something else and that last song bad luck is amazing.
And maybe SUSTO!
Hayes Carll ain't no slouch either.
I like alot of different kinds of music. But for some reason these two hit me in the feels. Love it.
The way they look at each other speaks volumes.
I noticed that too. Pure love.
+Carli DeLoach you would like Whitehorse then
is that his mother?
I'm pretty sure they're about the same age.
There married.they are the same age.he is a little older actually.
I just love these two, they have such a beautiful thing going.
Birmingham might be one of the best tunes I've heard in a while
Just saw them open for John Prine at the Saenger in Mobile AL last night. WOW, what a nice treat. As you see, I had to look them up once I got home to find out more about them. I was an instant fan.
really have never seen two people sing to each other so purely and joyfully as these two. what great music! what a great experience!
Dolly Parton meets Bob Dylan and the Two-man, six-band sound. Keep shovelin'...may the road rise to meet you on your journeys...
Dude! I literally said this to my BF!! "It's like Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan had a baby."
I was going to comment that she sounds a lot like Dolly Parton.
It’s crazy how for 7 years this has been my favorite musical piece!
😢 mine too

I just saw them for the first time in SF at the HSB festival 2013 they are now my new found favorite.

gotta love her voice
Saw these guys open for Drive-by Truckers in Sacramento. Great duo!
They're both obviously very talented musicians but it's all just a showcase for her beautiful voice... Melancholy with hints of whiskey, smoke & gravel. Wow!!! What a beautiful combination...
Tiny Desk is always producing amazing work and display of pure talent ....I say 2👍's up!
Just cant like these guys enough!
I want to love the way they do someday. ..
One my favorite bands
Just caught them at The Wood Brothers show in DC this past weekend. Wow.
That dog is awesome
Beautiful humans.❤
Heard their name, and heard their music for the first time three days ago. They opened for BlackBerry Smoke and Tedeschi Trucks... good lord ya’ll !!!!!!! Great show by all!!!!!!!!!!
I love the fact she is playing on a Yamaha!
Music I love, so rare nowadays...
What I would pay to hear Shovels & Rope with Shakey Graves, but alas they aren't playing in Dallas or Austin.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Maybe throw some wild child in there. Yes
Omg omg ZOMG YES. S n R are actually coming to Dallas on the 25th of Jan this year...
Shovels and Rope is playing in Austin on the 17th of this month.
Watching this now as we'll see them in Dallas tomorrow night!
That last one was EPIC!!
I now know what "Nickajack" means. Thanks Shovels & Rope. Great performance.
So in love with S&R!
Love them! Great harmonies, catchy lyrics. But, the simple, unaffected percussion is what is so very effective in their act.
+Judson Hair a little jack white / white stripes though
Jack White invented everything...
That dude's name is Michael Trent and he can bathe whenever he damn well feels like.
Astromyxin that's right. Tell it true, brother. It doesn't hurt folk to know the truth from time to time. I say make a habit of it.
In case anyone needs context for this comment, way back when you couldn't reply directly to comments and tag people in them, a young lady commented that "that dude"(referring to Michael Trent) looked like he needed to take a bath, hence this comment. She has since deleted her posting.
He looks bathed appropriately so does she
When you’re on the road you catch it when you can.
i really like them! :) and the music is nice
Watching them play makes me think of First Aid Kit's "Emmylou" only for the reason that its a song about the beauty, purity, and particular kind of love that comes from singing together.
Just discovered them and bought them, awesome duo !!
You can still buy people in South Carolina? Say it ain't so!
Poetic, heart wrenchin, pretty stuff
Really loved "Bad Luck" here.
They're awesome
Whoo! Hoo! I requested them! Thanks NPR!
