    It's astonishing that the butcher cover ever made it that far to begin with. I can see it as a side project, but not as an album cover. I think its biggest fault is that it tries way too hard to have a "message". It's a pretty funny story though.

      According to Kenneth Womack in his book, "Sound Pictures: The Life of Beatles' Producer, George Martin: placing the the "butcher shot" image on an album cover was never the intention of the photographer, Roger Whitaker or The Beatles. (Just how it would have been seen is not gotten into.) It was Alan Livingston, then the president of Capitol Records, who claimed it was Paul McCartney's suggestion.

    Capitol Records president Allan Livingston wasn't a fool regarding the Butcher Covers. Despite the fact that Capitol recalled the covers to destroy or paste over them. Allan kept a box of the Butcher Cover albums for himself. He had 20 albums total, most were mono, with about 5-6 stereo copies (rarest of the Butcher Covers). Before Allan passed away, he gave them to his son to do with however he wanted with them. His son would take a couple of butchers to Beatlefests in Los Angeles to sell. These "Livingston Butchers" are of the utmost pristine quality, and command the six figures they do today.

    Hey Eric, (aka Vinyl Geek)... as always, great episode, man! I'm also an avid Beatles fan and I inherited a copy of the butcher album from my late father who, back in the day, used a hair blow dryer to heat up and somewhat soften the glue of the trunk picture, thus doing a pretty good job of uncovering the real one. Btw, I also grew up playing drums with his Ringo style Ludwig, which I still have to this day... very cool stuff! -Now, as a side note, I did hear John once on an interview saying that his/their take on using the butcher shot was also because they were tired of record companies, (Capitol), butchering their babies, (meaning their records), to create these random collages of songs, like Yesterday and Today was; and so they went with it to use this as a kind of protest against this, etc. Just thought you'd enjoy that factoid. -Keep up the good work! :-)

      J.R. Pretty sure the reason that the Vinyl Geek didn't mention this factoid is because he knows that it is an urban legend, not true at all, and I applaud him for not spreading it further.

    I had been lead to believe that the Beatles butcher cover photo was a way that the Beatles were commenting on how Capitol records was "butchering" the way they released Beatle songs, making new collections of material from different albums instead of releasing them the way the European market received them. Made sense to me. Even Capitol missed the "pun" and soon put a stop to releasing any more albums with the butcher cover photo making the few that hit the market very rare and very expensive to own.

    • @jeffreyroedel9804
      @jeffreyroedel9804 Před 5 lety +1

      Exactly. It was John's way of slyly sticking it to Capitol for chopping up the Beatle's albums, their "babies" and presenting them to the world in different ways out of the band's control. I think the photos weren't taken to mean that, because Robert Whitaker had other concepts, but at some point when then needed cover art, John connected those two dots in his head and persuaded Epstein to insist that this "butcher" should be sent to Capitol as the official LP photo. It was John being subversive, and I love it and don't find the image offensive at all. It's clearly satire and allegory. Obviously the band doesn't endorse killing children.

      Craig Unger, the publisher of the teen magazine Datebook, thought the more controversial quote that would drum up publicity & sales was going to be Paul dropping the N-bomb in a quote denouncing American racism, but instead it was John's "more popular than Jesus" quote. Interestingly, a lot of the markets that boycotted the Beatles for John's quote were in the South, which sometimes makes me wonder if it wasn't just a pretext to boycott the Beatles because they were vehemently anti-segregation & quoted as such in Datebook. I have an earlier issue of Datebook from 1965, in which Ringo refers to American segregation as "rubbish," except it's transcribed as "roobish," because of Ringo's Liverpudlian accent.

    My father , who got me into records-be it older than Beatles and such ( I love the Beatles records though), he told me to watch this-when he gets home from the rig, there will be a test so I should take notes

    Hey Eric, great video! I was just wondering if you could ever review the album Forever Changes by Love? Ever since your interview with their guitarist Johnny Echols that maybe you could do a retrospective of their career and a review of their first three albums. Especially seeing as how influential Forever Changes turned out. Or to the very least do a review of that album?
    Much love, peace out!

    My dad's uncle has one with the butcher cover underneath the trunk cover. Absolutely astonished me the first time I saw it.

    Excellent work here on this and I need to watch a few times to let something like this ridiculous cover sink in! I need to find my old record now and see if the butcher cover is beneath! When I used to buy my BEATLE RECORDS at E J KORVETTES I should have bought 2 of each and left one wrapped!

    I bought a copy of Yesterday ... and Today on release day, June 20, 1966, at the mall record store in Houston. Despite what you said in the video, information about the controversy was all over the news, and I spotted Ringo's turtleneck through the white paper. At twelve years of age, I undertook to steam the top cover off with my mother's tea kettle so I could see what the fuss was about. Don't know how I did it, but I removed it intact with one tiny tear. I still have the album and the reissue cover, neatly folded.

    Obviously the Beatles were not in control of their own destiny, a Tavistock touch. Ha! 7:50 with Paul in a coffin.

    I am 60 and I remember being a little kid and steaming the cover off this album with my older cousin who taught me about all things rock ‘n’ roll. Thanks for the great video you sure know a lot about The Beatles for a youngster. 🤭I’m trying to figure out why you dressing do your hair like you’re in the 50s though
