In those days there were the safe middle class kids living in cotton wool. Or us .... who watched tiswas and loved the anarchy. The script writers were brilliant.
I gather there was like a 7 year waiting list for groups of adults from all walks of life who wanted to appear on the show and be incarcerated in the cage for the morning. There was a tin bath above the cage which would be filled with gunge or custard and dumped on them throughout the show, particularly in a game segment called Tilt The Tub lol. I don’t think the people in the cage even bothered to get cleaned up afterwards sometimes, they wanted to go round Birmingham still covered in pies and gunge as kind of a status symbol lol. On the last series after Chris left, they had a big skip full of foam in place of the cage, called The Swamp but it wasn’t the same. Must have been tricky for Bob to operate Spit and chuck the pies at the same time lol, looks like everyone had a good laugh though, and the guy who dodged the pie would’ve still got suitably messy anyway!
Im 55 and i remember this well, always funny and the best days, loved tele back then.
Health & safety would never allow this these days !! loved watching Tiswas late 70's . early 80's , 3 hours of chaos and cool pop videos

because you can dodge or run away from the buckets of water/slime. but you cant if your locked in a cage.
