This was actually recorded as a joke by the cast and crew, who played it at their annual staff Christmas Party (usually they just did a bloopers tape, but this particular year, made something different). It was never aired on children's TV. However in 1991 it was shown on the Victor Lewis Smith - TV Offal, who mistakenly said it was a 'pilot' show. Still fookin hilarious though..

01:11 - Zippy: I can, I'm the best plucker here! I kinda missed that on previous viewings in amongst all the other hilarious innuendo... classic, cracks me up!
I distinctly remember this show, and this episode in particular, being aired in the early 80's here in Australia.. I was about 5 or 6 at the time, and actually made a Twanger Box (a tissue box with an elastic band stretched around it across the hole where the tissues are pulled out, kind of a poor man's guitar) to use when this show was on.. The show was completely innocent to a 6 year old, but I'm sure my parents (who, at the time, were my age now) 'got' the adult angle.. This is not the only 'rude' Rainbow episode.. funny as hell though.. heh
I saw this on tv and remember going into school and telling others about me and they didn't believe me! My little sister had been watching it. I couldn't believe all the innuendo and knew it had to have been done on purpose but everyone thought I was reading into it and no-one else I knew had seen it... until years later I saw it surface on the internet and knew I hadn't imagined it! Mind you it wasn't 1981 when i saw it because I remember being old enough to know what it meant (my little sis was oblivious) and that I was in secondary school. It was around 88, give or take a year, so I wonder, they must have accidentally repeated it in the UK.. which seems a bit mad. in 81 I was only 7 and my little sis was only 1 so I def didn't see it (or notice it if I did see it!) that time around. In fact, I bet if I go through my teenage diaries, I think I wrote about it

Interesting to notice how Rainbow (and indeed, many British kids shows of this era) seemed so much more "adult" than all the crappy cbeebies and CBBC channel shows we have today, whilst at the same time being completely suitable for children and especially for preschoolers too. During the 1970s and 80s, people didn't complain about how adult they seemed, but instead about viewing time. The difference between how adult they seemed and how much childrens content featured in them was that the Mr Men and Little Miss cartoons, despite being absolutely suitable for the youngsters, tended to sneak in a few adult jokes here and there, while shows like Rainbow would sneak in countless adult jokes during its 19 year run (1972-1991).
