Today we're checking out VCV Rack. Grab it here: vcvrack.com Warning: If you're already someone using modular synths, this video may bore you to death. =)
The first 6 minutes are truly amazing. Not only do you deliver a lot of basics to someone who has no clue about sound creation but you easily adapt to the tool as you go.
You don't need to mix or split the output for stereo. Just use two patch cables out from one output to the channel 1 and 2 (L and R). It took me awhile to figure it out but you are not limited to one patch cable per connection.
i just killed 3 hours watching your video and building my first rack myself. this is so freakin awesome. i just want a big blizzard to come so i can be locked up with this thing. i am hooked and your demo helped me get started. i'm am completely fixated now. I subscribed and will be viewing all yer junk on this rack thing. i'm loving it. THANK YOU!!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, you made it easy and fun to start working with something brand new for me. This made such a positive impact for me - thank you, Benn!
Benn this is amazing! Thank you! I absolutely love your album Pale Blue Dot, the 15:15 mark on the video was giving me those PBD vibes. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome tutorial. Awesome product. Love that it runs on linux. I found out about it due to Andrew Huang mentioning it in his free stuff for 2019 video. Cheers.
I'm not following hard enough to know if you had any plans to cover VCV Rack 2, but hearing your comments on clouds made me check. The current version has the freeze and mode all figured out. Thanks for getting me going with the software again!
Man this was sick!! Super impressed! Especially with the price tag!!! I would love to see some in depth tutorials on Rolands new Eurorack digital multi effects/modules. They're are a whole bunch of em and the whole customisable aspect is mind boggling to me. I don't see how each module stands out from the other
What an incredible way to learn about modular synths before wasting money on it. I've been curious about modular but don't have thousands of dollars to waste on gear so this is great way to get exposure before jumping in.
So tru😂. It sucks being me I’m interested in modular and creative/complicated subjects but I’m a kronk brain I have a tun of learning difficulties so me doing that while high is practically impossible!
thanks for this its very inspiring the 'somewhat interesting thing' you made by the end is somewhat fucking beautiful i really appreciate your videos, this one has given me something to dive into during a really hard time the video really helped me get my head around starting to work with modular (i just moved to japan so this is a dangerous place to get into that stuff, its everywhere : ) peace xx
For stereo (or any multiple connection) you can just hold Ctrl and drag, i.e. drag from a source to output 1, hold ctrl, then drag from that same source to output 2. Or drag from the same Osc to 4 different filters or effects, etc.
I actually would of dived out of the video 6 minutes in but I find synth intriguing and I have to agree, the tactile nature of a physical object is somehow more intuitive. Good video.
@Benn and Gear at one stage you asked how to send stereo to to the audio. You dont need a multiplier, you just pull two cables out and send them to the in 1 and 2 of the audio module
@@wheresmydrink4552 You may like the idea of not having to have your info spoon fed to you because yes you learn more that way and believe me I get it, it's just that some of us are busy a f and trying to learn fast
Interesting. Was hoping the virtual Modular Synth software market would get another free addition like the very amazing (but also very cumbersome to use) SynFactory from many years ago which was my first introduction to software Modular Synthesizers at all.
When the "Space" knob of Elements is at zero, it plays the output of the strike/blow/bow module out the left channel and the output of the resonator to the right channel. It's not a bug, that's how the hardware version of Elements works.
You don't need a mult, you can just hold down the ctrl key while dragging a wire and it allows you to "stack" multiple wires from one source. And of course there are LFOs, in "Fundamental", at least in my Version 0.6.0. You can search for it in the white title bar by entering "lfo". And don't forget to click all free plugins on the website, then download them.
Can you hook this up to a daw and record it from inside the software or would you have to put up a microphone next to the speaker? I saw some videos by Andrew huang and as well as other people said that you just always record when playing with modular for reference when trying to remember stuff and so on so having the option to go from this app to daw would be amazing and suuuper easy
I guess you can sort of make an LFO by patching an alternating sequence (here functioning as a low-frequency square) into an ADSR, stretching out the attack and decay and release while taking the sustain down to zero to make the slow square coming out of the sequencer kind of sine-ish?
hey i just gotten the VCV Eurorack and im seconds new to how to get all the patches in it etc have u made a tutorial on that course ill check in but also do u have soundcloud
At 15:00 you make it into the bow noise for a second that I love. But when I try to make the bow on my own VCV, it makes no sound. I copied just about everything to try to get that tone but I can't get it to work. :(
How do you plug it to the sound card? Can't find the preferences etc. 🤔Oh and how do you get all those modules cause I just find a few in mine. Should I download them somewhere?
What is a Synthesizer labeled that can accept an analog audio source into it for manipulation? I am trying to find VSTs that can modulate audio from a DAW Buss, so that I can manipulate the audio going through it.... But I do not know what to call them, so I don't have a search term. :-/
could you help me with installing plugins? I've downloaded sourced zip files from the web page, and moved them to plugins folder together with Fundamental folder, but I still cannot see the plugins when I right click in the Rack's background. I can only see basic Fundamental plugins. on iMac for some reason only the Fundamental folder contains the plugin.dylib file.
Great video, but for some reason it always sound totoally different what i am doing and what is in the video, Like my SEQ-3 has a waaay higher pitch for example, any ideas why ?
HI. To do have output on 1 and 2, you can click an drag the output of the vca in input 1 of audio interface and than click on output 2 of the audio interface and drag to your output vca. That will combine the output of both 1 and 2 output. (Just know that I just watched the first 7 minutes of the video I have no ideas if you have a better solution further...)
Since CPU limitations are a thing, why do I see no options to "render" a sound (slowly) or even a whole track, like 3d programs do with images? Couldn't there be a non-realtime, much higher quality option?
I've heard of vcv rack, but never tried it. I hope I like it, because I'm not sure whether the convenience & price of VCV Rack justifies _not_ buying modular hardware. That warm analog sound is the only reason I'm interested in modular at all, because it's so financially intimidating.
Hi. I can see that when you right click you have many modules. when i right click mine i just get a few just fundamental. How do I get the rest on there?
Why isnt the Core Audio interface in my rack and i cant find it on the vcv website? The only audio out i can find is shitty cuz it doesnt merge left and right speakers
Hallo. I can not mace it runing on my MacBook Pro. It instals well, but it not lets to choose sound card. I cant get in audio driver selection and can only choose Core audio or Bridge. the same with midi module. Can choose anything but MIDI driver. Please - help..

Thank you for that observation! I was dismayed by the apparent limitation until I stumbled upon your note!
Hold ctrl then make the second cable or you will just delete the first.
There isn't a 'multiples' in my version.

Im a bloody beginner to modular synthesizers and love this tutorials. please keep on explaing the simple things as you are! love your videos
Love how rapidly you're putting out these videos!
this video helped me greatly in understanding how to create patches in a eurorack environment, thank you so much for making this!
Just got this today! Would have not known about it unless I watched this channel from time to time. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, you made it easy and fun to start working with something brand new for me. This made such a positive impact for me - thank you, Benn!
I am really liking this pop-up series. Hope you continue.
Great tutorial. The comparison of an Oscillator to a lawnmower is genius.
This is simply amazing! You have the right spirit for feeling and creating the music! :D

Gave a like on the first "I'm a module" second 😂
You're great teacher. You're pretty fast and I can't ask questions. Reminds me of college, especially grad school. Thanks for sharing.
Sounding incredible at the end
10 minutes in and he recreated the whole Terraria soundtrack, I'm sold
Excellent video, looking forward this project.
Thank you!!!!! Very siiiiiick!! Been playing with this for hours! Cheers
Imagine the video ending right after 2:11. "so there you go, goodluck with it" lmao
That could really be all you 'need' to know before starting this. haha
Hahaha :D

That last tune you made was great.
Damn it, another piece of software I never heard of, and now I have to install it, get high and spend days in it.... thank you :)
You.are truly a.brother of mine (: haha
So lucky you have the time!!

That's cool. There must be a place to share and listen to, just different interesting patches that people have come up with.
Cool, thanks.
Thanks a lot mate =D It really showed up the possibilities of it. That will be my beginning with Modular Synths iihhhuuuuuuuuu
This is just so cool, never knew about this software before.
That was a great tutorial! I would love to see some of the Make Noise and Intellijel stuff.
I actually would of dived out of the video 6 minutes in but I find synth intriguing and I have to agree, the tactile nature of a physical object is somehow more intuitive. Good video.
Very nice introduction. Waiting for the Reaktor Blocks Video ;)
I've been playing with this too! Thanks for the video!
Your eyebrow also looks modular and I love it.
This took so long that this is my favourite song now.
I know it's not news to the synth junkies or sound designers, but that freeze and verb is cool. I love s&h stuff and wavetables. FM is beastly too.
Best tutorial on the subject. Thanks!
"That's how easy it is to make music"
All i can think about seeing this is "Buttons!"
@Benn and Gear
at one stage you asked how to send stereo to to the audio.
You dont need a multiplier, you just pull two cables out and send them to the in 1 and 2 of the audio module
47 people who clicked "Thumbs Down" have each maxed out several credit cards on modular hardware.
Mr Henson maybe?

thanks dude i learn so much from you
I was looking for a modulaire vst and came across VCV Rack. Still try to figure it out how it works, but it looks amazing.
this was super helpful, thanks!
great tutorial, thanks a lot man. super helpful for a noob like me
The Bitwig Grid is also really nice !
thanks. Modal/Clouds PD tutorial would be super interesting! Subscribed.
just beautiful

Long shot, but would like to see a comparison video of Dexed and Valley's Dexter module, just since they both ostensibly emulate the DX7.
Subbed immediately and I don't even know any of your other videos.
A follow up to this would be awesome
Is there no chaos/random module for this yet?
Love this channel❤
When the "Space" knob of Elements is at zero, it plays the output of the strike/blow/bow module out the left channel and the output of the resonator to the right channel. It's not a bug, that's how the hardware version of Elements works.
Can you please do this with Bitwig's grid? (or does Grid not do this sort of thing?) Your track sounds great.
YOU SYNTHESIZED MY LEFT EAR!
suggestion: would you maybe make a part II to this video with the newest version of VCV? would be awesome!
love it! thank you very much!

(+Frank Buss) You have no idea how useful the Ctrl thing was to me.
I'm pretty sure its Command not CTRL - at least on a Mac.

Hi great video, can you tell me where to download your patches to the VCV.I really liked your result.Thank you
That GUI reminds me a lot of Blender, for some reason...
Ah, I see: from the source code, it uses oui-blendish, that’s why.
Pluging Nooooooo-ads
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 What is oui-blendish?
Can you use the mouse wheel to turn a knob? That seems like it would be easier than trying to manager a circular drag.

This is a great place to start, designing systems and experimenting, before spending thousands of dollars on hardware.
first oscillator sounds too digital - is there a way to use higher sampling rate and higher bit to make it sound more analogue?
so I am able to use this for actual music production? Since I couldn't afford such a range of modules, is this an option for me?
there actually was a cloud generator in the list of modules. it's the e-series e340 cloud generator
Should do an updated video on the new plugin version!
Do you still have that old EF-303? Would love to see you play with it.
Thanks, significance of the different coloured patch cables?
