I bought my door insulated to r-18 but it's a newly converted garage so i had that luxury of choosing what to get. Other folks that buy a house with an existing garage door might just get aftermarket insulation because its more cost effective than paying thousands for a whole new door. Others are renting a house so they're not gonna spend that money on a house thats not theirs.
So if you're doing a new install and can choose your door, then yes, get an insulated door. If you have an existing door, then go aftermarket because it's more cost effective. And if you're renting then definitely aftermarket.

@@sosgds I sure hope so. I'm currently insulating the inside walls with Rockwool R21 insulation and then I'll insulate the garage ceiling as well and I have a feeling that it'll be better insulated than the rest of my house. Not to mention Rockwool is also more soundproof so it'll help minimize sound travel into the house when I'm working on the garage.

Warning!! if adding insulation to your non-insulated door . Make sure your springs will handle the added weight..springs are put on for weight of door .Adding insulation. (You will change weight of door.)

The HomeDepot 1.5” stiff foam-board insulation kit is the way to go.
I think the only way to improve it? Is to put some of the thin foil pleated perforated thinsulate In each panel first before putting the Stiff foam-board.
Oh & do it right if you please?, By taking out each of the (in the way so as to get a good fit) hinge sheet metal screw fasteners.

Bought home new in 2003, by ordering model, picking lot and paying for upgrades. The 3 car garage was an upgrade and the garage doors had 3 options. The doors were 7’ high, options were 8 ft doors, insulated doors and laminated insulated doors. I chose the 8’ doors insulated. The 16’ door eventually (after 15 years) bowed in the middle and had to be replaced. A local dealer replaced the door with an Amish mfg. door, that was quite reasonable. He installed the door and a new Liftmaster 3/4 hp belt drive opener for $1700 on 1/32019. This was less than a replacement door that’s available everywhere. This new laminated door is heavy, but not only is it stronger, but it has 5 panels for an 8’ door. The old door had 4 panels. I’ll have to change the springs eventually to a stronger spring. The door is 8’ x 16’, can you give me a name of a supplier and size for a pair of heavy duty springs (70,000+ cycles). Comments and Thanks!

Hi, I would like your help to decide on garage door please. I need to replace my 16x7 garage door. Which one is better Colpay T9200 18.4 R or Amarr Olympus 3200 19 R-Value? Thank you

Thank you for your question and your trust.
We have installed both brands before. Yet we no longer have a working relationship with either. But I had the choice I would consider the Amarr garage door.

I agree, but you forgot to mention the door will have to be balanced again to account for the additional weight. Something homeowners should not attempt.

I mean how much weight will foam actually add which is what most use, that 1.5 Styrofoam boards.
