The in-game start date for the episode was set sometime after 3051 PD.
The system they used for this game was a hybrid of Mothership RPG and the Aliens RPG systems. Some other sci-fi systems you might like are Esper Genesis (a DnD 5e based system), Starfinder (a Pathfinder based system), and Stars Without Number (based in some old school DnD mechanics). I love science fiction, I don’t get to use it enough in my games, and this one-shot was definitely an inspiration to correct that. Also, if you like this, watch The Expanse.

This was me running my first one shot last week for my partners birthday it wasn’t even dnd it was just a Sam style one pager and I was terrified!

It was not a very smart gun and Laura sadly did not quite get to live out her Ripley fantasies here.
Would have been something if everyone died, she was the lone survivor and initiated self destruct before escaping in that escape pod.

When Travis says "this is the best", Ashley's reaction almost made me legitimately cry. As a frequent GM, it hit me right in the feels seeing all of her anxiety melt in that moment as a player had a genuine, unprompted moment where they said they were enjoying themselves. And yes, Ashley, this was AMAZING
Also love when all the players one by one notice and start laughing when they realize they're getting "Planet of the Apes" 'd

@@warmpancaxe I have the same issue; It’s easier to wean off of it than hop off the coffee immediately cause it’s essentially a caffeine addiction and the headaches we get are a sort of withdrawal. I used to drink 2 cups; one in the morning and night, but after weaning off of it, I can drink one cup in the morning and not get a headache.
Letting them roleplay, then adding that she forgot to tell them that they're still in cryo is such an Ashley Johnson thing to do.
I took that as their introductions to each other 30 yrs ago before they went into cryo

Ashley's "Mother" voice is an odd combination of soothing and unnerving.
It's that uncanny valley from AI generated voices where, even if it's nearly perfect human speech, your subconscious reminds you, "Right, a computer just said that, not a person."
She truly nailed it so well.

That scene at the end with Dr Nomen was a masterclass by Marisha tbh. She had everyone completely engrossed, it was a fantastic blend of funny, sad and shocking and the reaction was delicious.
This whole thing was great, Ashley did an amazing job as did the production crew. Would totally watch a 100+ episode weekly series of this haha
Agreed. Marisha's ending was so well executed. The comedy of being born in a petri dish, the lack of identity for being "yet another Johnson frog" to the dramatic ending itself. Just wow. I rewatched that scene 2 or 3 times.

Ngl 100+ seems way too much, would make it like a ‘The 100’ situation which went from being a series about a 100 people be sentenced to survive in a “inhospitable” planet earth, and then slowly devolved into being about “Hey there is an omnipresent being that will determine whether all of humanity will become one with it and basically live in equilibrium, or death made by the choice of words made by a representative of humanity which whoops the main character became one of the worse people in the entire series and chose to be the representative.”

I believe, that Laura and Travis don't tell each other anything about how they are going to dress up for CR. They simply go into different rooms, get all sorted out and then open the door, look at each other, nod and walk to the car. I have no other explanation for Travis' outfit.
Laura thought Stargate SGC, Travis thought Andromeda High Guard Lancer Corps.
Now all I want to see is behind the scenes and Travis in a dress and go “well one of us has to go change and it’s not gonna be me”

I know Ashley said she never wants to do this again, but I would watch her DM literally anything. I am truly overwhelmed by how incredible this is. This has been by far my favorite one-shot I have ever watched, on CR or otherwise. I got so emotional at the end. It was well balanced in every way. I wish this were a longer series but that would detract from the beauty of this story. Well done, Ashley. Truly, phenomenal job.
See for me Grogs oneshot was the best. Not because it was emotionally heart wrenching or anything but because I just could not stop laughing lol

No joke I was waiting for the end to be some sort of "and then a little puddle of black stirred..."
i was actually hoping for Mother to respond with "Terrain scan complete. Both of you may now exit the escape pod without issues.", or something.
When he got out his favourite book to read in the escape pod on the way down I definitely expected some ichor to drop onto the pages

@@willoux_ that’s the impression I got, to roughly emulate the appearance of a frog. And while she obviously wasn’t gonna wear a see-through top, I thought what she wore spoke some flavor about Frenno as a character.
Hearing Marisha mope about the pet snake is kinda funny at first, but then you see that basically Virgil is her only friend and companion she truly appreciated during the break slides and it just turns from hilarious to heartbreaking.

The fact that no one laughed when Marisha said "I check myself" and Liam responds with "before you wreck yourself." Shows how tense this was for them.
Which in the end makes it funnier because in the end she did wreck herself lol

Ashley freaking killed this. If this ends up being her only one-shot, what a one-shot this was. Even better seeing just how fully enraptured everyone was by the game and in her as GM. Liam looked so proud at the end ❤

Ashley’s calm voice and narrations seem to bring to life the empty nothingness that is space. Coupled with the minimalist ambient soundtrack its eerie and wonderfully so.

@@beayn While Ashley's one shot here is quite fantastic, it certainly may not be the taste for everyone. I highly suggest watching one of the Critical Role Campaigns to more properly get an understanding for the appeal of CR as a whole.

Spoilers of you've not seen: Sarge was hands down the MVP. Saved the character who ended up killing the threat, hands down did the most damage, and tried his best to save the rest.

I don’t know why, but Ashley simply reading the writing from the Statue of Liberty’s book moves me so much. Her voice has such a power and beauty to it
The way Ashley paused for a beat or two before doing almost anything added to the tension of the experience. Yes, it's most likely because this was her first GM experience and it was overwhelming. It didn't matter what's the cause, the result was that it make the experience more intense.
Newer DM's take note of this. If you need time to make something up, use the silence to build tension as you think.
Ashley did great. She designed the game so that her need for pauses would compliment the tension.
Travis opening up with 5 crit successes is like when they establish the guy in the horror movie who will either be the hero or the Wharf that gets ganked first
Though appearently he stole all the crit successes from Laura...

Resident Evil when the hypercompetent PMC sergeant leading the Op who consistently makes the right choices.... gets, ahem, latticed.

Can I just say that Ashley is an AMAZING GM?
Like, I have been neglecting her a lot as a player for being a bit... background-ish compared to others, but her GM flow is glorious. She has the strength, the storytelling timing, everything. She sounds like she's been doing it for years.
She's an outstanding player also, always giving plenty of room for the rest of the party but then turning up with the coup de grace when required.
Totally agree that her gm skills are incredible. The pauses she takes add so much tension

at this point everyone of the cast is lowkey top shelf at DMing. Honestly was there any oneshot which was lacking?
I was the same watching the first 50ish episodes of campaign 2, but now in campaign 3 she's really made a presence for herself
This whole one-shot was so cinematic. I think this alone would be a great movie. It had action, drama, emotional highs and lows, a solid story, good characters, and opens the door to a series.
It would be a great movie if not for the fact that it's basically a copy of Alien

@@ethanlivemere1162 imo a movie that entirely happens on a ship with an AI voiced by Ashley, this specific crew (frog and garter snake included) and their successes and failures would render a little different than Alien and it could be a really fun watch. a lot of movies are very similar to others - especially in these genres - and it could even be an homage so i don't think the similarities would take anything away really

@@ethanlivemere1162 oh well in that case i guess the more obvious references could be swapped or something, with enough different details for it to be passed as an homage or even just inspired - for instance even though she's also named Mother it tracks in relation to Dr Nomen L. Frenno and she didn't speak in Alien, or she could be named something else entirely and then it's just another AI on a spaceship. i know my comments get a little lengthy and i'm not disagreeing w you, i just haven't slept and find the idea of this as a movie really cool

Laura finally finds dice that roll consistently high, but it is in a game where rolling low is mostly desirable.
It makes me a little happy that Ashley’s one shot is space themed, especially since Ellie (TLOU) loved space, it’s almost like Ellie finally got too :]
Apparently a lot of Ellie's love for space was inspired by Ashley's interest in it, as Druckmann got to know her over the course of making the game. So full circles all around. :)

For anyone interested: yes, actually you can shoot firearms in space. Our curent gunpowder has oxidizer in it so you don't need an O2 in an atmosphere. But there will be problems with overheating and a barrel getting dirty.

I just rewatched it after realizing I didn't remember most of these quotes, and it was as pure gold (and silver) as it was the first time. I'd remembered the basic shape of the ending, but not how they got there or much about the characters. And partly due to the the time limits of the charity stream (and the donation-imposed wackyness), that was the best part.
I love how Travis takes every opportunity to go all-out on his cosplay. It's such a delight xD

This.. as someone who is still VERY new to DnD, tabletop RPGs period, was so awesome to see. And as someone with stage fright, seeing Ashley just genuinely so worried and nervous, only to be completely calmed by her friends telling her how much they love it, was just beautiful to see. you did GREAT Ash!! and I hope you'll GM more in the future.
Taliesin with specs, Travis “The Yee-est of Haws” Willingham, Laura’s unfortunate dice journey, Marisha teaming up with Sam’s lil’ one, Liam as a beautiful ruddy android, and most importantly Ashley’s Mother voice and very good GMing? Looks like this is one space horror feature I can actually get behind.
Sad that the cast were so worried they were going to get ragged for not knowing the science of sci-fi/Space. I'm a science teacher and knew from the get go this is a bunch of people having fun with hokey movie science. The science works because the game says it works! Have we been watching sci-fi for the past 50 years? Enjoy it!
It even seemed like Ashley and also Marisha prepped quite a bit, you know? Though I was kinda amused at the idea of a frog holding its breath underwater
It reminds me of my grandpa and how western. If you ever asked him why they didn't just do xyz his answer would always be "because it's in the script"
Same with scifi I figure. People whoop expect realism in fantasy scifi blow my mind. Its like they go "the movies ruined. Can't watch it. What? No the giant alien that looks like Jeff Goldblum mixed with an epileptic walrus is fine but my god they miscalculated the thrust equation at the end so now it's just too unbelievable"

I’m a person who is bothered by lack of realism in movies. The tone matters a lot; the intentional goofiness lets you know not to take the science too seriously. But either way, as a viewer it’s frustrating to be invested and kind of trying to problem-solve what they could do, and then it just turns out that in this universe sound travels through space or something like that.
I don’t think anyone ever has an excuse to be an asshole about something like that, but I resent the idea that there’s something wrong with me (or people like me) because I don’t enjoy inaccurate sci-fi as much.
All that said, watching these guys was wonderful. I miss CR so much!
@@DanKaschel I mildly agree but it's the difference between fun falseness and blatant falseness. Star Trek and Pacific Rim are fun, even though there are scientific inaccuracies like sound in space or Jaeger Suits being able to move as easily as they do. Then there's ones that take you out of it like Battlefield Earth.
This? This is the perfect balance. I love everything about this and I wish they would do more.
Cool detail for space nerds: at 1:11:00 the water leak in the suit causing waterbubbels to cling to Liams face is (i think) based on an actual incident on the ISS where Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano reported water in his suit during a spacewalk and they had to abort, because bubbles are very clingy in microgravity and you can easily drown in your suit if a large enough bubble covers your mouth and nose. I adore how big of a space nerd Ashley is

I am blown away by how well Ashley did. I would have guessed she was a seasoned game master, not that this was her first time.
First time, and streamed to millions of people.
There are some obvious points that demonstrate a first time DM here, but overall, she did well
It's probably because as a actor, voice actor and professional dnd player, she likely has taken many improv classes, which means some of the experience is there despite it being her first time. But yes, I agree.
I’m so happy all the players enjoyed the one-shot! Being a DM for the first time is SO terrifying, can’t imagine how stressful it’s gotta be being a DM for the first time in Critical Role lol
the intro and outro narration were so beautifully written and spoken. the lines from the Lazarus poem were such a poignant way to end, i was already crying but that just made me cry harder

At 3:13:10 you can see how enraptured and entranced Liam is with the story telling that Ashley is explaining. He's so involved and can appreciate how much she put into the story. It's beautiful 🥰
Ever since the stretch goal was unlocked, I've been looking forward to seeing Ashley in the GM seat, but man, oh, man, I was not expecting to be floored like this! 😲 She FAR exceeded any and all expectations I had; her storytelling was phenomenal - palpable atmosphere, divine narration - and she handled the gameplay incredibly well for a first-time GM. I would easily watch another game run by her, should she ever feel like giving it another go, and if not, I'm just happy we got to experience this. 💚

I love how Travis rolling four Crit successes and Liam rolling four failures in a row has both of them equally happy. Liam plays for the sake of the game and it's beautiful.

i've watched this like 3 times, its such a wonderful game, its got everything in it from action and humor and drama and all the references. and ashley does such a good job dm'ing like it makes me a little sad she never wants to do it again bc she did such a great job and made such a fun and engaging game
Ashley's pauses during the creature reveal had me tucking my feet up to protect them from whatever might be lurking under the bed. chills down my spine. incredible
I just wanna say that, as much as everyone absolutely nailed their roles to the goddamn wall, I was so happy to see Ashley killing it as GM. I was really looking forward to her one-shot, especially once I heard what the genre was. Even if she does decide never to do this again, I hope she knows that the community are really happy that she did indulge us this one time and that it was awesome.
Loved the production values, loved the plot, loved the performances, loved the GMing, five stars all round.
Especially for her first time GMing, Ashley is a friggin’ incredible Game Master. This was so awesome.
I think what worked especially well were her pauses. I guess many of them were due to her fresh DM mind racing (decisions, phrasing…), but it created the right tension for this setting. And everybody was just glued to her mouth.
I love how they spend 5-10 minutes discussing whether or not to close off the galley and get into the science lab that way, and you can see it and Ashley's face, and even hear it in her RP as mother, that she's just like "Go the f*** outside please! I worked so hard on this, please just go outside!"
I was laughing in tears for like 10 minutes thinking what a disaster Captain was! She went in and shot the fuel tanks twice and then shot her own Sargeant!!! And then she jokes about it with Liam - "Did I hit it?"... Hilarious!!!
Johnson knocks it out the park for this genre. Her understated and matter-of-fact style suits cosmic horror down to the ground. Genuinely surprised by how well she commanded the tone. Love to see a follow up series.

I know Ashley said she didnt want to do another of these but i still wish they would dive into this again. I loved this so much, just rewatched it for the fourth time. Sify-Horror is just one of my favorite themes and the did such a good Job. I love you guys. Cheers from 2022
