  • Me and so many of my Indian friends always talk about going to India when you’re older and no longer hate India. It’s entirely a difference experience when you’re a bit older (and not an annoying teen), it’s all so beautiful and am so happy I can actually appreciate it and be so immersed in it. I love the piercing and everything it represents and hope you’re enjoying the india content too xx

Yeah, I’m upset for her too. I remember watching a rerun of The Real World: London from the mid-nineties, and there’s an epsiode where one of the cast members goes to a professional piercer in London, and he goes over all of the steps, and he had a medical backround in the army and had been working as a piercer for decades. He talked about hollow tipped needles too. I stupidly went to Claire’s and got my ears pierced with a piercing gun and they never healed quite right, but the teenager doing the piercing did an awesome job with placement and was quite careful. It’s just not a good method to pierce your face with blunt force or with the jewelry that will go in later on.

I had my nose pierced and it was done in Bangladesh with a needle that wad sterile. She used thread to loop through and told me to move it gently after a few hours. She used thread as this natural and if we started putting metals the chemicals can affect the healing and adjusting of the peirce. I wasn't in pain as she used ice to numb the nose but did feel the needle go through it caused my eyes to water but not too painful. If we can't find any studs to put through in Bangladesh they usually put a small thorn from rose or lemon bush/plant.

I love how the comment section is aware about infections and all. But guys, the main thing is, in Indian traditional way, they really do not pierce ur nose or ears with needles. The place she went to was a traditional one, and they all do it directly with the piercing. Yes it has chances kf contamination, and it can be done anywhere else for that purposes. But it's just something that traditional jewelers will never learn, and it's hygiene while doing these. My whole family has gotten pearcings done like that and it's really common, so if someone is concious about getting infections, it's safe to say don't go to a local, traditional jeweler.

i got my nose piercing done this way too with a Ragi wire. They sharpen the wire and pierce. And yes i do agree they should have more sanitary conditions, my piercer didn't too.
But everybody reacts differently and 15secs in and i fainted. The next thing i was sitting on the ground (i was standing when i got it pierced) and it was so damn straining for my body😆😅
I kept it on for 15days and there was blood and bruising in that spot and i removed the nose ring and put a small Neem Stick on my nose and BOOM, all my bruises and pain was gone in 4 days and then i put on a gold nose ring 😁
it's an experience to get it pierced in India this way. Gunshots are said to be more harmful cause of how violently it snaps in the skin. It was an experience and wouldn't have gotten it any other way

This is the traditional way any piercing is done in many parts of India. Firstly, they are professionals who would have been doing this for generations. They are called 'sunaar' or goldsmith who along with making and selling jewellery also do piercings. It is a more auspicious thing for them to do a piercing so it is very much respected. The sunaar uses the end of a gold coil which will be heated and sharpened to pierce. Those with more experience avoid the nerve somehow. They ask us to use the water left when rice is almost cooked and apply it in the area at home. We now know this is used to heal any damage to skin and prevent infections. Yes there are usually no gloves or alcohol rubbing but even without them people have had piercings done in the past for generations. And yes it is more painful but that just makes it a personal choice for anyone to opt for it or not. It doesn't make it right or wrong, or good or bad. And something to remember is piercing a cartilage is harder than soft flesh so it bound to painful. If ppl still come at me here saying it is not safe, I don't know what to say. Many traditional methods in many parts of the world look different from the urban culture and if it works, it works.

I am genuinely curious as to why it is done the way it is done.
I have several piercings in my face myself, all done by a local piercer. And comparing the process...I am just genuinely curious as to: Why was the piercer not wearing gloves? Why did he not use a needle? Why was the blunt jewellery used?
I would assume that it has to do with the meaning of the piercing, traditions, etc. but it also does seem (from a western point of view) unhygenic which is why I am genuinely interested in an explanation.

      Heyy !!
I don't have any nose piercings but i did get my ears pierced in a similar setting. They are professional jewelers and know what they're doing, so it isn't that scary. It's in our culture to have ear piercings and it's done all the time, since many years !
They wash their hands and needle. I think since it's hand piercing, having a glove doesn't give them the required grip ? It has to be precise and holding with their hands is better🤷🏽‍♀️.
I mean we do have modern and more hygenic places to get them done, but these guys do it traditionally and have learnt the art of jewellery through generations of their family. Also these guys work with gold/ silver and not artificial jewellery so that's why it's different.
Also i think we just are used to it and exposed to a lot of stuff since birth so we have a stronger immune system.

The reason its bad to pierce with a blunt object ( like the end of a piece of jewellery) is because its kind of like poking a pencil through a piece of paper - its tearing through the skin . As opposed to a needle which is hollowed out that " punches" through the skin . Plus he's not wearing gloves and the sterilisation situation seems none existent 😭

I always heard Indian saying stuff about "looking like a freshie" like what is that even means. Please love your heritage. I know we all growing up in the west far from home but there's no reason to not be proud of being Indian and its heritage. Not everything in the west is great, and not everything in where we came from is great. Both have its good and bad. We take the good and leave the bad. We need to stop this mentality of "the west" is better than us. They are not. We all can learn from each other but no one is greater than the other we all human beings with its own culture.
And its good to keep your heritage alive bcs it's who you are, your culture, your heritage. Why we judging our own people just bcs now we "living in the west" so we have this "better than the rest" mentality.
I hope more and more people started to change this mindset 😅
