I am literally doing this test with you (well, virtual you). I've been so scared to use this darn thing, have read the book that came with about a dozen times, but wasn't till I found your tutorials that I felt brave enough to give this thing a go! Thank you for brief, efficient, and clear instructions.
Aww Aimee - thank you for taking the time to comment! That means a lot to me. I know I felt like you do when I first started, and there weren't that many resources at that time and that's why I made the tutorials! Enjoy your new Instant Pot and if you have any questions, visit my website and click on the TIPS in the main menu and you may get your question answered, or you can contact me on my contact page, or comment here :)
Man I was really scared as well. I must say that all the tutorials I listened to never mentioned about that burning smell. To make it worst, I am trying it now with some beans in it before knowing this now I'm scared that my beans will taste rubber.
Thank you so much . Spent whole afternoon trying to do water test but turned off as could smell that burning plastic smell and thought it was faulty . Called Customer Services -:) This is third Water Test video I’ve watched and because you mentioned the smell and the steam coming out of the silver but I felt good enough to continue. Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
@@PainttheKitchenRed Posted this 2 years ago, wow! I can confidently say now that I use the heck out of my Instapot. Why buy canned beans ever again? :)
@@sharonmiller5553 You're welcome. You've taken a big first step! The rest is easy.
😅 this absolutely helped me from completely having a Panic attack
Hope you've gotten over it, and made your first recipe :)
Me @ the moment 😭
Lmao!
Thank you for talking about the smell and the sounds - that is so helpful!!
Glad to hear it - enjoy your new Instant Pot!
Thank God for videos like this because my husband got me one for my birthday and it’s just been sitting there for a month lol. I finally tried the water cycle today and I totally did it wrong. I’m glad I found this. Your videos are super easy to follow! Thank you!!
Happy belated birthday!! I'm glad you found the video helpful :)
thank you = my IP DUO let out a steady stream set pressure and off to the races - I was alittle leery but your video was the shot of confidence I needed
Thanks for your nice comment Susan - enjoy your new Instant Pot!
I am so glad I found your videos. You have made me feel more confident in trying my new Instant Pot!!! Thank you for your video.
You are so welcome! Always happy to help.
Received my pot today so I'm going to try this out tomorrow. Thank you!
Hope all went well!
Thank you! I watched several times as I was test my 8qt Duo for the first time!
Thanks again! 😎🤠
You're very welcome - hope you're enjoying your 8 quart IP!
Great tutorial, quick and to the point.
Awesome - I'm glad you found it helpful!
I love your blog, I hope you start making more instant pot receips on CZcams 😊
Thank you! I keep delaying the recipe videos but you've given me a push!
Thank you so much. My confidence is heightened.
You got this! Hope you enjoy your new Instant Pot.
Thank you for the detailed yet 'to the point' video !
You're welcome! Glad you found it useful.
Thank you. This was the best tutorial for the water test. You were about the fifth one i went to. The others rambled and seemed like this was their first time they ever did the test. When they finally got around to it ,more than half the video had nothing to do with the test. Again, thank you.
Awesome, thank you for letting me know. You are most welcome :)
Thanks my pot will arrive by mail in a week. Of the videos I have watched yours seems to be simple to understand and learn from.
Thanks for your kind words, Myra!
Thanks so much your videos are so accessible and helpful! I'm excited to try out some of your recipes next :)
Glad you like the videos - I do hope you try some of my recipes!
Hello, I've had my instant pot for awhile now, and been terrified and now I've been pushed to a situation where I must use it tonight. This was a great on point explanation on how to do the water test, and did it along with you. Thank you for this video, it was really helpful where others weren't.
Thanks for sharing! I'm so glad you found the video helpful.
Very informative. Just received our instant pot last night and we are excited about using. My wife will be binge watching videos for receipes. Thank you.
Happy I could help out! Enjoy your new Instant Pot.
Ok, I watched two videos and am going to start my test. Thank you!
How did it work out for you? Enjoy your new Instant Pot!
thank you for the clear instructions
No worries! Glad to help.
I got it yesterday and scary to use 😂 . Thank you to make me feel so much more confident to use it 😊🙏🏻
Great! You're most welcome.
Thank you so much. This video helped A WHOLE LOT!
I'm so glad to hear that!
Again excellent, well spoken, clear and concise. Thank you. Oh and perhaps mention to hold the lid so you open it with the lid facing you so prevent steam in the face...pressure canning taught me that :)
I'll keep that in mind for when I edit the video next time. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this!!!
You're welcome, Joan - I'm happy to hear you found it helpful!
Thank you so much for this video!!

Glad I could help!
These are fantastic
Thank you!
Great informative videos
This was very helpful
I'm glad to hear it!
Like so many of the other posters on here, I have so intimidated by the pressure cooker, remembering the one my mother used decades ago, that I bought a MINI! Little things don't make as big booms, right? LOL Seriously though, I feel more comfortable with the little Instant Pot and can't wait to make some vegetable soup in it - didn't have all the ingredients or I would have made some today.
Thank you SOOO much for doing these videos. When I heard your voice, I instantly smiled and knew the best was here!
Thank YOU! I really appreciate your kind words, good luck!
Great video. I subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!
I was reading the manual, doing the test. Panicked and came over here looking for help 🤣 thank you!
Happy to help! Enjoy your new IP.
I’m going to do the water test right now. Wish me luck!
Ximena - hope it went well! Enjoy your new IP!
Thank you so much!!! I did the test while watching this video because my instructions were not half as clear 👌👌😁
Glad it helped!
WHEW 😅 thank you for this!
You're welcome, Sarah!
Right...I was convinced mine was broke!!
Oh thank you Nina your video was the only one that worked, the others showed 3 cups of water for the mini duo. I was about to throw this thing through a door. :)
You're welcome, Christine!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
I think I am gonna do this when I get home because I've been getting a food burn notice quite often lately and I need to troubleshoot.
I took mine back because of the food burn issues. I had to do all of my high heat cooking on low. Anything that needed lower heat settings, I was unsuccessful preparing. My new one (InstantPot Duo Gourmet) has adjustable settings for rice and other presets. I haven’t had time to try it out, but I think it may solve my problems.
Thank you for sharing this. I’ve had my pot for almost a year and was a bit scared to use it.
Hope you're over your fear and get to cook some great recipes!
Since I'm doing a water test anyway, may as well toss in some whole cloves. Not only would it help deodorize as you allow it to natural/slow release but it would also help to disinfect anywhere the steam reaches in the nooks & crannies through the release valves.
Interesting idea!
Thank you so much for this. I followed the IP website video directing me to put in 3 cups of water, so after an unsuccessful first attempt in my Duo 6 quart, I realized it was probably too much water. I watched your video & ran it again while the water was still hot, and it worked. I must say the Sealing/Venting switch is so loose I thought it wasn't going to seal, but perhaps this is normal for early usage of the Instant Pot?
Val, the quantity shouldn't have made a difference other than the amount of time to come to pressure. You have to be patient especially if using cold water - it takes a while to heat up and come to pressure. The pressure release handle is supposed to be quite loose - this allow steam to escape to stabilize pressure. Enjoy your new IP!
I feel just like Aimee below--scared to death to use it for fear I'd break it or ruin $$$ food! Thanks for your non-scary approach and explanation. I'm off to make short ribs!!
Hi Linda, thanks for your comment. I'm happy to help out!
I got mine for Christmas and haven't used it yet because I've been scared of the pressure release and the steam, now I'm going to do the water test on my lunch break. Thank you for this video!! Without it I would still be too scared to use this thing 😂
Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for the great video but I am curious about one thing. The Instant Pot company says to never cover the release valve with a dish cloth or anything else, so I will go with what the company that makes this says. Other than that...great video.
Yes, NEVER cover the valve or lid-lock. Better to use a (spoon) handle to release to vent. SAFETY FIRST.
that's what I was thinking when I saw this. She should redo the video
Although I did everything as in the manual & this video. But: while the screen was still showing ON there was steam coming out for few seconds. Then it started counting down. Whilst counting down it released steam on and off too. Then it showed END, I had a look at the valve which was still up (indicates pressure) and it oozed some more steam. Is all this ooze normal?
Very small amounts of steam coming out from the steam release is not unusual. Happens to me sometimes especially if there's a lot of liquid. If it's a lot of steam, that's not normal. If you want to contact me through email or social media and send me a video, I can try and give you a better answer - neena@paintthekitchenred.com
Some of the newest Instant Pots have a different venting system on the lid. These have three visible parts for venting instead of two. Make sure the part shaped like a teardrop is up. You will press this part for venting and turn it to pop it up for stopping. It vents out of the large venting port, away from your finger when you press it for release. I haven’t used this one, yet, beyond testing, but I loved my old one until it failed by allowing moisture to remain on the outside of the inner pot after filling it with food for cooking.
That's exactly right. My videos on the Ultra and the Gourmet detail this kind of mechanism.
Ultra: czcams.com/video/dyhTg9f5Hng/video.html
Gourmet: czcams.com/video/6aALYVPPt68/video.html
Thank you so much for saying that you can expect water and stream to come out of the valve while it’s coming to pressure! I thought something was wrong with my instant pot. I have a question, when I turn my knob to quick release it won’t stay and release the steam, it have to keep physically keep the knob turned until all the stream has been released. Is that normal on some models?
Glad to help! Can you tell me which model you have? If the lid is the kind in the video, it should stay in place. There are some models where you push down the steam release "button" until it clicks and stays down.
@@PainttheKitchenRed I have the instant pot viva. I just want to make sure that my instant pot isn’t defective and something is wrong with the valve knob or if it’s normal. Thank you!!
@@bdo2982 you may have the kind of lid with 2 knobs. One where the steam actually comes out (round shape) and another that is shaped like a comma, which is a button. You have to push down on the button till it clicks in place. It's a spring-loaded mechanism. Check out this video to see this type of lid: czcams.com/video/aA07Jtokpsg/video.html
Thank you so much.
The manual should have a QR code 🧑💻 to scan sending us straight to your how to set up videos.
That's really kind of you!
Is it safe to put a towel on the venting release? I was thinking of doing this so the steam doesn't go everywhere on the cabinet right above the table in my small kitchen.
Shakeel, when I first made this video I l would ightly drape a towel over the steam release briefly while I turned the handle. I no longer do so. I would recommend that you use a long-handled wooden spoon to turn the handle instead. To prevent the steam from going on your cabinet doors, turn the Instant Pot so the steam release is not directly below the cabinets - that's what I do.
I heard some units have a three quart line. Don’t use it for your water measurement. Use a traditional cooking measuring cup, not the cup included with the product. For the 8 quart cooker put 3 cups of water in the stainless steel insert. That is 24 ounces or 750 liters. I don’t know how much water goes in the smaller cookers. Check the instructions with your Instant Pot and following the instructions no matter what size unit you have.
robalan57
Yes, the current instructions mention 3 cups for the water test
How long does it take for the float Valve thingy to do its thing? How do I know tots working until then? I feel like I’m waiting on nothing, it’s doing nothing
It depends on the quantity of water. If it's just two cups or so, it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, but more likely less time. It should say 'On' and then change to the countdown after the float valve comes up.
Hi I think I’ve lost my condensation collector , can I use it without it ?
Please help me
Waiting in anticipation
You can use it without the condensation collector. Just be sure to clean up all around the sides and rim when cooking is done.
Thank you for the smell comment I freaked out and thought I was burning something
Ahh, yes. That hasn't happened with the newer Instant Pots I've broken in. Enjoy your new IP!
Hmm... have a brand new Plus, and it still just says “On” how long should it take to get uo to pressure?
Daniel Cronin we have one as well, seems like it took 3-5 minutes for it to start to build pressure. And after it did, we just get a steady flow of steam out of the release valve... We'll see how their customer support is tomorrow...
This is what I wanted to know. Mine is well past the 5 min mark and still says On...
kjlamkin2 - what did customer support say?
Doing a water test for the first time ...this instant pot is so intimidating
Hope you're over the hump and are able to use it regularly by now :)
It says on and has just been releasing steam for the longest while,it has been almost an hour...I put 3 cups of water...how long should it take?
It shouldn't take more than 5 to 8 minutes (should be even less). If the float valve comes down, it's depressurized. If it hasn't come down, gently tap it with a chopstick tip and it should drop. Wiggle the lid slightly and that can also help the float valve to drop.
I saw steam coming out the whole 2 minutes. Is that normal? I am sure the i put the valve on close.
Lorena, did the float valve come up and was it a very slight amount of steam? If so, you're probably okay.
Can you always place the towel for quick release? I'm damn scared of that steam volcano :/
You don't need to be scared. As long as you turn the knob and move your hands and face away from the Instant Pot, you'll be fine. I don't recommend you use the towel anymore.
I have a question ...How long do i need to wait to release the pressure .if I want quick release can I do right after the cooking is done ??
I really liked ur vdos ..you gave me courage to buy instant pot😍
Yes, you can do it right away but you might want to watch my video on the types of pressure release because if you're cooking a pasta or messy food, there's a variation you can use: czcams.com/video/sXmarvVGCRM/video.html
@@flowingredstonemrawesome5757 Great to hear - enjoy!
I never did a test before using mine .... does that matter ?
Brittany - if you're using it just fine then you're okay. However remember the water test for anytime you have issues with your Instant Pot not working as expected. It's a great baseline test to rule out recipe-specific problems you might encounter
Paint the Kitchen Red Great, thanks so much !
🤨 my instant pot says to put three cups of water in i tried it four times sealing button is in seal position setting everything correctly as you did steam comes out the top the whole time but the PIN comes up saying it has pressure and it never switches from on to the countdown 😥 after 20 minutes I turned it off
Abbey, it could be there's a defect or something needs tightening. Please check out my blog post: www.paintthekitchenred.com/16-reasons-why-instant-pot-not-sealing/. Some of the reasons won't apply to you, but there are some that might help you out. If nothing works, you should either return it or open a support ticket.
@@PainttheKitchenRed Thank you!!!!!!!
Mine didn't go off automatically. It just said "on" well after two minutes.
It does stay on 'On' for a bit. How long depends on quantity of liquid. But at some point it should change to the number of minutes you've programmed it to pressure cook for.
Paint the Kitchen Red I put in the suggested 3 cups, and “on”, float up, and steam coming out lasted for 20 minutes. I ended up pressing cancel because it seems like something was wrong.
We have a 6qt duo nova and the directions say put 3 cups of water in not 1?
Is this correct?
It looks the same size as yours.
You can use 3 cups; it'll just take slightly longer. 2 or 3 cups both work.
with my 6qt all i gotta do is ad an hour to any of the cook times... and thats when my meals are ready.. seems to take for ever to reach the timer count down... i like my i. p. but it is a long wait time not like a microwave thats for sure..lol more like old time canning , just dont have a whistle top ratteling on top.. lol a 4 minute cook time takes me from start to finish .. an hour and 4 minutes and then the count up starts for self release
It is exactly like an old fashioned pressure cooker, but digital, and with lots of safety built in. 4 minutes is definitely not 4 minutes, but how much more depends on the quantity of food in the Instant Pot and how cold the ingredients are.
Note: If your instant pot display looks like this, 00:00, it is for hours and minutes, not seconds. I almost tested mine for 2hrs 02:00 instead of 2 minutes 00:02 😂.
Very common mistake!
I Accidentally pushed pressure cook button am I going to be in trouble?
Pressure cook will work just fine too :)
I don't know how I did this... but I set it for 2 hours!!!!! After you've set the time, can you change it? Needless to say I didn't understand why it was taking so long! LOL!
Laurie, you probably thought it was MM:SS instead of HH:MM :) You could have just pressed 'cancel' once 2 minutes had passed OR you could have pressed 'Cancel' right away and programmed it for 2 minutes. It would have taken a very short time to go from 'On' to counting down. Good thing is that now you know!
@@PainttheKitchenRed Thanks so much for your quick response! That's exactly what happened. I watched a video where the demonstrator was using another model, and it showed seconds. Good to know it's as easy as hitting the cancel button. I've had such a fear to use this... it's sat on my counter for over a year! Can hardly wait to try some of your recipes! THANKS!
Think I would've died if I didnt watch this.
Good thing you watched it :)
What if the steam is coming out of the sides 😅
That most likely is because the sealing ring is either not put in properly all the way or it's damaged.
Mine stuck on 'ON' whyyy
This can happen. It could be a one-off. If you had a LOT of water, it does take time to change from 'On' to counting down.
I couldn't doit
I can't get mine to work
Donna, I would need more information to help you. At what point are you having an issue?
I laugh at myself because I am scared of my lil pressure cooker. When I cook chicken at kfc with a giant pressure deep fryer. That took my whole body weight to close.
Lol, hope you ended up getting over your fear :)
It was all very informative. However I don’t agree with telling people to put a towel over it as it’s releasing the steam.
It’s been on for way longer than 2 minutes and the “on” hasn’t changed to the time :/
Did the float valve come up? If it didn't then you might want to check the sealing ring. If it did and it never counted down, you might need to file a support ticket at support.instantpot.com
I’m having the same problem...the “on” hasn’t changed, the float is up, and steam is coming out...for a very, very long time.
There is no steam button
You can use the pressure cook button instead.
PLEASE.... A word of caution here: it’s very dangerous to open the release valve using a dish towel and/or potholder as you could suffer serious burns. I literally cringed when I watched that part of an otherwise great video. Working in the medical field, I’ve seen many hand, arm, & facial burns from improper use of pressure cookers.
You can release the pressure valve much more safely by using the hole in the handle of the spoons that come with the Instant Pot by placing the valve lever into the hole of the spoon handle and gently releasing the valve by gently moving it from “sealing” to “venting”, again being careful to NOT have your hand over the steam valve and lever.
Thanks,
from Kat in the kitchen.
Thank you for your comment. You definitely need to be careful not to allow steam to come in contact with your hands, face, etc.
Mine is just opened and don't have any spoons! But thankyou for this tip, I'll be sure to use something else
Putting a towel over it is what cloggs ur vent.
Why we have to do that test?
Nery, we do the test to make sure the Instant Pot is working correctly and to become comfortable using it for the first time. If the water test doesn't work, then you can identify what the issue is and possibly even return the item before it's too late. Thanks for your your question.
@@PainttheKitchenRed thanks. For your inf.
Wow the steam is still coming out 😧
Takes a few minutes. Hope it went well in the end.
You shouldn't cover a release valve of any kind....
