The real horror here is him parking the truck so far away from the house and having to walk all this extra way with the heavy boxes.
Ah, good old indestructible Nokia. Throughout the game, the protagonist had a powerful weapon and he did not use it.
Somebody really needs to make a game where you use a Nokia as a weapon!
When I was 11 my friend got a concussion from a Nokia.
When I was 11 a Nokia beat me up and stole my girlfriend
Just 2 years ago Nokia company forgot how to make the unbreakable formula and now new and old phones are breaking like soft cookies!
yes, Nokia Killing People. My good ol weapon against enemies.
This is a beautiful looking game. On a different note, it would be funny if your mom texted you :" leave immediately" and you just left. Like a secret ending or something.
I guess?
12:47 the barbed wire is set up to keep people in, not keep people out, inchresting detail
Extremely effective use of sound on this one. The music, the sound cues... All very good stuff. Created an air of dread throughout, without any need for jumpscares.
fr the sound always remind me gettin top in a haunted house
37:24 deciding if you adjust your bath mat horizontally or vertically while ominous music plays in the background is the peak of horror right there...
The title of this - The Windows are Gone - implies a very Skinamarink type of horror: you're trapped in your own home, with all the windows and doors gone, and suddenly a place that's meant to be the ultimate safe place feels like a prison. And the music is well done too, like when the track becomes a lot more sinsiter when the neighbour casually mentions letting herself into your house to drop some pastries on the kitchen counter...like you're literally in the middle of moving into your new house and some random person turns up, claims to be your new neighbour, says some weird shit and then lets themselves into said house.
Full speed, Kevin.
Was thinking the same thing. I’m wondering how many people are. 🤔
I was going to say the same thing! It’s giving very much Skinamarink inspired. The title itself made me think of the movie. If anyone hasn’t seen it you should give it a watch!
This game is like Skinamarink except it's not fucking terrible
@@SteelyDanzig this comment is cancer
I really felt gaslit with the doors changing colors, the toilet losing it's lid and furnishings like the fan and vases appearing out of nowhere.
Hi! I hadn't noticed the doors changing colors, but the objects appearing are due to me editing out some of the furniture unpacking (it takes a while to place everything). Sorry for any confusion. Well spotted though!
@@AlphaBetaGamer yeah I figured that was the case, but the unnerving atmosphere makes you second guess yourself.
Clearly, someone is a fan of _House of Leaves, Skinamarink and Silent Hill._
Skinamarink, I heard abou this movie. One of the most unsettling and puzzling movies I’ve ever seen.
@@matheussilvarodrigues3576it’s a very esoteric, nightmare like film. Very unsettling.
and Hereditary maybe
This man packed nothing for his bathroom needs except a bath mat, towel, and lotion. His priorities are clearly in order.
"I have no mouthwash and I must decorate"
12:44 ABG: *looks at pastry*
ABG: *immediately looks outside for a spot to frisbee the plate out of sight and out of mind*
Yeah they were some pretty suspicious pastries! Maybe everything that happened after eating them was some weird LSD trip!
Who even was that lady? Was she real? Was the house a symbol for the "labyrinth" he built? Then what is she representing ? His mother? His guilt? Just a noisy neighbour? We will never know..
Her "traditions" may represent his habits. Breaking them comes with severe punishment. Feeling guilt for theor deaths requires dying, too. By breaking the tradition and the habit of feeling guilt he embarassed himself and went against "the right thing to do".
Beingbforced to consume the pastry might symbolise being forced to be consumed by guilt.
@@AntipaladinPedigri very interesting interpretation. Does it mean the house is present in anyone's mind? (hence the "tradition" of feeling guilt)
That would be implied by the house's previous owners. So I'd say yes, the house attracts certain people.
The part where he says he built a labyrinth to get lost in, tells me that he probably has read the house of leaves book.
I got that same vibe from the game as soon as I read the title. House of Leaves seems to be getting more recognition in gaming recently.
Ugh don’t bring up that book, I’m still not over being angry about how a whining bitch-baby manchild of a “protagonist” absolutely ruined my ability to finish it
😡😡😡
All the windows are gone? A Linux user must have moved in.
It must be a reference to that famed book "Gone with the Windows".
Linux user using WSL in windows.
Interesting note, I haven't finished the video yet, so unsure if it's relevant later, but the spooky number that randomly texts the player nothing (to which the player responds "who's this?") changes. Before going into the basement it's 994819, but after going into the basement and interacting with the puddle, it changes to 972060. Timestamps to show each are 35:00 and 36:13. I'll edit this comment if this is something that is brought up later.
Edit: at 41:20 the same text message displays a third number, this time being 994819.
Edit x2: It doesn't seem to come up again. Unsure what it is or why it does that, but interesting to note nonetheless.
Interesting game, i'm left with a few questions, such as about the neighbor, the man in the tapes, and a few other lingering details, but I sort of imagine that they're not important anyways, outside of symbology and such. Perhaps the protag made them up in his head as part of the "labyrinth" he built in his head. Perhaps the house is a mini silent hill and draws people to it to either consume, or release from their grief/self loathing? Perhaps the neighbor was real and drugged him for the lolz? Unsure. Either way, good game/video!
A commenter above wrote about the game gaslighting you by changing door colours or putting fans and vases where there were none before. Subtly changing the numbers seems to be a part of this pattern.
@@AntipaladinPedigri I hadn't noticed the door colours, but I had noticed vases and other objects that I know ABG hadn't put down, so honestly, that 100% tracks. Esp since the number clearly corresponds to whatever funky biz is going on (Supernatural, drugged pastries, all in his head, etc), it would make sense that it's fluid as well. Thanks for the reply!
Ah, no, those subtle changes are due to edits in the video. I'm not sure about the door colors, but the objects appearing are due to me editing out some of the furniture unpacking (there's a lot to unpack). And the number changing is because it was from a second playthrough (the phone number changes randomly each playthrough). Sorry for any confusion. Well spotted though and great insights into the meaning behind the game!
@@AlphaBetaGamer Ah, that makes sense too! I had initially wondered if the number changing might be due to playthrough things, and I *did* briefly wonder why not everything got unpacked, but I also just assumed the game never intended for you to unpack everything. The game messing with you absolutely makes sense in context XD Thanks for the clarification!
The walls are changing too. Look at the green bathroom when he first visits it for example.
Also, all the fences have barbwire going over it, and the top is angled towards house, like it was meant to contain something, not protect from outside.
I can't understand the arc of the man from VHS tapes. I had a suspicion that he might be another side of the same road accident and his family died in it too. But there was almost no info about him and his family.
Overall - great beginning, great continuation, wasted finale. Still, very impressive!
first time one of these games actually scared me, but it helps that i can relate as i moved into a house like this once before, plenty of people were always scared to even stay over a night because of how old it was and looked but i was pretty oblivious to it when i got used to it, now im somewhere else with actual windows and sunlight and the house is young,
and i can reflect on the last one and suddenly see everything that made it so unsettling😊
Intro: "you promised to take me there one day, but you never did. Now I am all alone, waiting for you to join me in Nebraska".
Absolutely devastating. Such a cool little game. A little bit House of Leaves, a little Skinamarink, even had an Enigma Studios flare. Definitely got Mothered vibes. Very nice.
"Did you...get into my house? How did you get in here?"
"You forgot to lock the door, silly."
Huh, I actually liked that one a lot. Had real Skinamarink vibes to it. Setting up the house and unpacking was a neat way to make the house more yours and familiarize yourself with it so when shit goes wrong you realize it sooner. Guy can really write, but I will say that it was a little much sometimes with a bit too much "tell" and not enough show, specifically with the video tapes. Good prose, but for a game seeing back to back 6 lines of text can be a bit much.
Still, small complaint. Quite liked it.
Liked the silent hill vibes for the game. Decent short horror game.
The weird neighbor set off alarm bells, but the backyard fence went full NOPE.
As someone who works on homes, predominantly super old ones. Them fuckers are HAUNTED. Like, i actually walked out of one and had to take a break because i heard someone laugh from behind me. In the unfinished, bare stud attic, while i was alone. Ive seen/heard some shit, but that one make my neck feel all funny.
Oh man. You've must've been through some crazy stuff! I used to visit family members who had really old houses in Mexico, and it was like charged with a ton of energy. Sometimes, it feels like old houses have a mind of their own.
ah yes the old gaming art of searching every single corner
Love how this is listed as Gone Home.
Turns out the real windows were the friends we made along the way.
I have a slight feeling that this protagonist is experiencing some sort of trauma delirium where he's (most likely) locked up in some institution (hence the barbed wire) and everything he experiences here is his mind slowly deteriorating to the point where he commits suicide. Can't explain the "good ending" but the labyrinth could be understood as his mind and the tapes as a mirror where he reflects on himself. Just a theory
The scariest part of this game for me is the bathroom connected right next to the kitchen.
Imagine trying to cook when all of a sudden, someone takes a massive dump.
Lots of houses have adjacent bathrooms and kitchens. Most modern houses are designed so all the rooms with water connections are very close to each other.
(In America anyway)
@@SteelyDanzig- that's... awful 😶
@@danielcrafter9349 why is that awful?
@SteelyDanzig cross contamination is impossible to avoid in this method. Often times the water is being recycled
18:13 ah yes, the Mariana Drench
Is this some sort of purgatory thing going on? Everything just feels so weird, from him not really questioning the stuff appearing, to the way his parents just keep having the same response to him finding weird tapes. Seriously, his mom just goes, "Oh :\" each time he's mentioned seeing weird stuff on the tapes and despite checking in on him she doesn't bother asking _what_ was on the tapes.
So far (23:00 into the video) nothing about the situation seems real, so I'm wondering if he's either dreaming or if this is some weird purgatory.
So having finished I'm kinda lost. Going by the last ending he actually _did_ move into the house so all of that was apparently real, with the upside down setting being in his mind or something. Except that doesn't explain the stilted uncanny texts from his mom, the strange lady at the door, the fact he found the home through dreams.
Honestly feels like going for the, "OooOOOoohh he was crazy and it was in his head all along~~~~!" ending ended up shooting the game in the foot, since it being in his head in no way explains the other weird stuff.
I really like this one! I thought the prose was very well done and a good read :) the setting is simple but very creepy. Nothing felt extraneous.
Let Family Go
Door
The two greatest choices in life.
No savegame? What a great idea! The game crashed after +- 40 minutes and I need to start all over again which I won''t.
Thanks for the video ABG, I can at least enjoy the ending this way.
I love the hard decision to eat the pastry from the weirdo next door hahaha! Great upload ABG
something about gamers leaving doors open just kinda makes me mad idk why lol
Good build-up, good narrative, good sound design - a bit clichéd story nonetheless, but still a *guilty* pleasure...
ABG, still ahead to discover new indie gems.
for some reason i felt a weird sense of satisfaction when you turned around on the half way to the master bedroom just to close the front door you left open. weird... anyway thanks, i guess?
the light shadows and the VHS effect are amazing. And sounds to
Didn’t get too far into the video because now I want to play the game, haha. The cinematography in the opening was great!
reminds me of Skinamarink. what a pit of dread to see the intimately familiar take such a tilted dread. Lovely horror experience this game.
im obsessed with this house. ever since i first watched this playthrough i havent been able to stop thinking about it. its so familiar in its layout yet i have never been inside any house that was anything like it. this house was built just for me, i must find it and i must reach it, i think about it all the time. this is my house and i found it on a video, somehow the universe showed me the first sign like this and it is my mission in life to find this house
Man, that music makes it all. Really, really good.
Great game but i cant help but get the vibe that their is the fingerprints of Kitty Horrorshow's Anatomy all over it. Thats not a bad thing, quite the contrary, that a compliment! Great tension building psychological horror game.
The score for this game is awesome. Love that intro music.
Oh I do love a horror with not only a psychological message but also a happy ending. Nothing quite like a horrific nightmare you can push through, eh?
this is one of the most polished and artistically pleasing indie horror games I've ever seen. magnificent attention to detail (besides rock solid bushes, but i get it), and i vibe that nails being in a haunted house movie harder than almost anything ive ever seen, up there with anomaly but kittyhorrorshow, and even surpassing it in my opinion. A game like this converted to VR (graphics could be upgraded, or honestly kept the same) would be incredible, vr needs a good single player, bite sized game like this.
As soon as I saw the truck's license plate, I knew it was a Brazilian game. Very good!
This was really good. The endings were great imo.
28:33 this computer is such a cutting edge technology that the cutting edge of the technology cut all the cables.
This game touched me cuz im a father, it give you that submersive perspective in every way, what a masterpiece 👏👏
Im surprised there werent any cheap jumpscare. The music was pretty good
I actually enjoyed this one, it had a point and wasn’t just a mess of things mashed together and called a “game”. I can’t imagine the burden people must go through having to live with guilt like that. I don’t know I’d handle it well…I don’t want to know. Well, I hope everybody has “ending 2” as the result, should they have to deal with guilt like this.
SO glad he got that leak fixed, water damage over a ceiling or wall is no joke. Kind of a dick for killing his family though.
13:58 I admire him that closing the door.
Honestly should have went with actual 3d animations(or 2d, either way) for the tapes. Plain text on the blue backround really takes you out of it, and feels forced. Some voice acting would have done wonders as well.
I love how the insurance guy is called "insuranceprick" in the player's phone
Sitting here having breakfast for dinner with a few friends, I do like to show your channel at dinner parties here. You've gotten several subscribers from last years Christmas party. I do hope you don't mind I show your videos. "Unexplained Events In The Depths Of Hell" is a crowd favorite here!
Wow, thank you very much! I never imagined any of my vids would be shown at any dinner parties! Glad you like the vids. I really loved "Unexplained Events In The Depths Of Hell" too. It's very silly! :)
ah this is a brazilian game. i wondered why the box was in plain portuguese.
There's a lot of elements that seem really inspired or taken from Homebody, the opening was very reminiscent.
A few thoughts:
He rented that big ass truck for those few measly boxes? Damn, talk about overkill.
Those Jadite colored bathroom fixtures are high dollar in todays market.
I could see this as a horror story where a malignant entity uses peoples sorrow and trauma to lure them to the house, where it drives them into despair and eats their soul.
Lovecraft used dreams often in his stories. I could see this working well in his style.
There were hints about the town itself being unusual, with the lady saying they valued their traditions and for him not to upset things. Like, she knew he was coming, and knew he was already very familiar with the house. New Spooky town setting, like that town from IT. Weird shit happening.
the Best title with the Worst writing, i haven't seen writing this repetitive beyond ao3 fanfiction and other similar games. this doesn't stand out from the category of 3d-trauma-maze games (barely a maze or labrynth to begin [end] with) aside from the fact it reminds me of the 2012 Sinister movie, which also has a Very Basic premise but is in all ways more interesting. i couldn't read past a single sentence after some point in the video because i already know what theyre going to say, and this isn't even a trope thing, its the predictable flow of words. i feel like everyone who even mentions Skinamarink in the comments are redditors who find these types of games scary as hell even when literally nothing happens and the suspense is vanishingly thin (to put this in perspective, i'm terrified of Skina. think of how i feel when i see people compare This to That.)
on the contrary i really did like the visuals. i thought the bad ending cutscene was way too dragging but it looked good, with the protag's hanging animation too, i wish there was a good ending cutscene though because the daytime enviorment+lighting looked VERY swell for games like these. i haven't seen dialogue being presented like this in a while, considering its from a vcr derived perspective its cool, and not to be like Those Other Guys but it reminded me of Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion. button icons are real cute, probably from an old phone or takes inspo from another game but it made me think of a typewriter. i also liked the detail of being able to decorate to your liking, which is trivial but kind. in conclusion i think this game's a nice pile of dookie, borderlining between memorable and forgettable, i feel like they could have revised a lot of the protag's monologue and the labrynth zone's nokia texts to something at least less basic.
Big Lynch vibes. Loved this one!
Too scary for house moving and House in the middle of the woods
This game title gave me the vibes of Monster house and The hills have eyes or something
Very Skinamarink vibes in this.
I was shivering throughout the whole video.
I wonder how easy it would be to set this up as a real life prank. Have someone move into an easily modifiable/interchangeable home. Move objects, doors and windows around. Eventually fully trap them. I wonder how long it would take for them to go insane.
this game reminds me of there is no one lives under lighthause
for indie game, the game is made full of passion.
I thought Lord Farquad was your neighbor for a sec lol
Speechless rn
I like the references to The Shining
in my restless dreams i see this house
a sillent house
Is this the same house used in REMOTHERED or is the layout just similar to me?
Time to leave!! "Weird neighbor" saying, "Please, don't embarrass us with your... differences." 11:10 😮😳😡
40:17 Bro was in the spider verse 😭
We know this game is set in Romania, because only in Romania can someone steal your windows right out of your house
really cool game
53:45 sad little head shake, powerful acting
i appreciate the no jumpscares. the music, the sounds it was all perfect for a suspense atmosphere
Good opportunity to recommend buying the novel house of leaves. Though it might not be for you
Was one of the painting a tribute to Hereditary? Beautiful game.
Wow , great game and great story
The beginning is really brilliant. Let alone the top-notch sound design, the environment progressively gets altered in subtle ways. Among them:
- the 1st floor's locked door switches color at least once ;
- the unknown caller's phone number changes when you look at it a second time;
- some furniture (vase, fan) moves slightly...
Some of these can be unnoticeable while playing (I actually had to check the video a few times), still installing a passive dread feeling -as the "Shining" movie does with the same tools.
Unfortunately, the PT-esque 2nd part is too cliché. Such a buildup deserved a better outcome, IMHO.
Beautiful game !
So much better to watch a decently written story
The real horror would be if you had to respond to the text messages as you would traditionally input text on the old Nokias...😵
What engine was this made in?
Yeah, yeah, sure. ABG. You're in the Skinamarink house, but keep working on your interior design.
Vai Brasil 🎉
There's a lot of interesting themes here, but this game is really the epitome of "tell, don't show". The VHS tapes are definitely the biggest offender here, but there are many points in the game where the protagonist just explains themes and metaphors directly instead of letting the player interpret them. So many instances of "I feel like..." and then explaining his exact emotional and mental state and what the images are supposed to mean.
Also, spoiler but hopefully you watched the video before reading the comments:
The topic of the game is extremely serious and dire (*especially* with one ending being a survivor's guilt suicide over a very real situation many people have to live with) and none of it is handled with any respect. It pretends to be deep and meaningful but it's as schlocky and exploitative as any bad indie "psychological horror" game I've ever seen. Not surprising or shocking, but tasteless in a tired way.
This whole thing kinda reminds me of Junji Ito’s style of horror game.
Man shouod have tied his Nokia around a stick and used it as a hammer. Best defense weapon
22:30 the stove moved to the left side of the fridge.
this game feeling is quite similar to silent hill 4 the room
What was the meaning of the neighbor letting herself into the house at the beginning for tho?
Really good atmosphere but man oh man am I over the grieving dad/husband cliche. Give me literally any other story and main character at this point.
House of Leaves and Hereditary inspired maybe ? Great game tho.
It’s giving Skinamarink vibes ❤
did you edit the intro
The ABG monster intro? It's edited slightly. About a second shorter than usual.
This is basically a PS2 style horror game!
Were i supposed to kill the game with the task manager after completing it?
well? if in that house the Windows r gone, why not start using Linux then? or iOS maybe?
