I will soon publish a list of songs I use. Also, I use a lot of sound effects If you listen closely. They are also from here! You can actually try them for free for 30 days. @@Mattiaskrantz Ok, but what about "I use guitar strings as horse hair?"
@@OverlyHonestGaming wait thats illegal
After reading these comments I realised that horse hair is unexpectedly common material for stringed instruments all around tha world...
On the violin, The bow is made with Horse' Hair. So, Yes.
apparently the best strings are called gut strings made from dried out sheep intestines
Violin bow
Almost every single bowed instrument uses horse hair
I’ve only heard of horse hair being used for bowed instruments like fiddles violins and cellos. Never imagined them being on guitars or ukuleles.
Remember, “bad” is subjective. Sure, it doesn’t sound like how traditional strings do, but there are people who invent purposefully “bad” sounding instruments as a means of pushing the boundaries of their own creativity.
glad someone said this. i think it's important to try new things out to expand our horizon of creativity. even if it doesn't sound "good", it's a step towards somewhere, with a destination where it will sound good
Hey thats just like how my saxophone sounds like a broken lawnmower but we can make them sound beautiful anyways
So much music is like this. I love the sound of horsehair strings. They are really fussy but there is no sound like it.
Yeah, I think part of it is also figuring out what actually it is good at -- it seems clear that a lot of normal guitar techniques won't work as well on horse hair, but are there any tones that are interesting? It seems to me the lower strings are particularly dead, so maybe we have to try something more percussive if we're playing down there. Also, was there a lot of experimentation done to determine where the "sweet spot" of each string by gauge is? Maybe a different tuning would help bring out the strings at their best tone. Maybe even just getting rid of the low strings and playing it as a different instrument would help. Lots of various ways to experiment here. The sustain is clearly going to be deadened compared with a steel or nylon string, and the tone lacks brightness. Is there anything you can also coat them in as another possibility?
i personally thought the picking sounded good
Now we need a violin with horse hair strings, and a bow with violin strings. Reverse engineering

@Dallen3000 - I couldn't figure out why he was opposed to using a shorter guitar.
Horses like the tall Andalusian have longer tails. It would've had a different sound with a complete strands. He could contact the Andalusian Horse club. Or, the Lippizan horse club...
Joining strands don't allow for a solid path for vibration to follow. It would be equivalent to a bad wiring setup on an amplifier. If wires are frayed there's impedance.
The end result sounded like a Ukulele lol, so guess the idea not as bad :D

You are wonderfully crazy, Mattias. My dad is a piano builder and tuner (now retired), and I play the violin, with a horse hair bow of course. I'm really amazed what time, dedication and ingenuity you put into questioning the conventions on how instruments are built, and trialling things. That's an essential quality of an engineer - always tinkering and not abiding in conventional wisdom.
Im curious to see, moving forward, whether your musical talent or ability of dedication and determination will be the spotlight of future videos. If it might be the latter, a lot of people would probably love to see you take a crack at a new language. I personally loved the hard piano song videos, and the format especially was really entertaining. You could yry learning a language on your own well enough to converse before getting a private teacher and trying again, and compare the results and share the experience.

There is an old instrument in scandinavia called Stråkharpa in Swedish (Talharpa in Norwegian). It uses horse tail hairs (hence the name in norwegian). As you can tell from the swedish name, it is also "stroked".... with a bow, to be clear. A bow much like that of the nyckelharpa.

"We're gonna need a bigger horse" Uhm... OR A SMALLER GUITAR? That was my first thought, using kids guitar
My first thought was to use a Ukulele
Me2
my first thought was to twist it, I mean that's literally how yarn and rope is made so why not strings?
I know those strings didn’t sound great, but another thing to take into consideration is that it is a steel string acoustic guitar and the top is heavy and requires a lot of energy to drive the top, hence why they use steel strings. If you were to use nylon in a steel string, it also wouldn’t have enough energy to drive the top. Because many classical guitars once used gut strings and eventually players switched to nylon, it may be possible that the strings have enough energy to drive the top of a classical guitar. I know you said it wasn’t worth it, but if you still have the strings and didn’t cut them, maybe it’s possible to test the experiment on a classical guitar.

It might have been interesting to first treat the horse hair strings in some sort of binding solution to give them strength and perhaps a better tone. It was a fun video, thanks...
I used to own Arabian horses, and we put their tails in socks so they would grow really long for shows, I had a horse with an over 8 foot long tail. It took so much effort and care to get them to that point, I wouldn’t have sold a fraction of them for a price that would ultimately have defeated the purpose.
No kidding, though, the motivation advice is so true. Everytime I have to practice, I have no motivation, but once I start, I get motivated and I can easily practice two hours. The hard part is just starting. 🙃

2:08 at the bottom corner, pretty e p i c idea Sir Kelvin. 👌🏻
There is an instrument that already uses horse hair as its actual string, it's called a Gusle and its from southeastern Europe. I recently got one and the string on it wasn't twisted, it was just a lot of strands. It's held and played similarly to an Erhu (imagine tiny cello that sits on your knee) and only has one string that isn't even pushed all the way down, but used for its harmonics apparently instead of actual notes.
It sounds like ass though, there's probably a reason it's used as an accompaniment to traditional spoken poetry, because I don't think I could bear listening to it on its own.
It's real pretty though.
I Heard that the spider web is quite strong and flexible, but it's a litlle costly, You could make an ukelele with spider webs as strings.

Dude, I would make of every version you do, either it is the guitar with horse hair or under water Piano and so on, a virtual instrument, like you did with the hammer on paino strings. Even if some dont sound really good as a instrument alone, many producers like for hip hop and electronic muic look always for unusual sounds. It would be basically a additional income source! 👍
I could honestly see all his creations in a museum and I would so go
Who else got excited when he first tried the new strings and did not expect horse sounds😭
The amount of effort you dedicated to that is remarkable
I love you bro I love you and your videos you work hard and you definitely deserve it :D
Gusle is a traditional Serbian instrument and it has one string that is made of exactly 50 horse hairs.
It also has a bow made of horse hair.
Interesting. That's how we (some builders at least) sometimes make strings for Tagelharpas/Jouhikkos (black and white strings are a visual indicator for the twist).
To make them better: soak the hair in warm water for about 20min --> twist them flemishly ;) --> apply to your instrument --> let dry.
Horse hair has the tendency to stretch. Ideally it needs to stretch out to it's "working" form/length.
Nylon and metal strings, gut, etc... also need time to fit/sit perfectly. Hair needs this time even more so.
When you soak them --> they are "sort of" stretched. They will decrease in length and diameter in the process of drying and stretch under their own tension. So be careful not to tune them to their destined voice as this might be way too much tension.
This will result in an almost (!) already perfectly stretched string and gives a clearer sound.
I know I'm very late to the party, but maybe someone wants to try this out, or you want to do this again.
by 'twist them flemishly' do you mean twist them so that they're belgian out on the sides? ;)
@@almishti
