San Diego's Clairemont High School’s class of 1979 was celebrating their 10th reunion. Lorraine Kimel and photojournalist Rick Corcoran attended their festivities. Why did we cover their reunion? Because they were the inspiration for the iconic film Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Director/writer Cameron Crowe went undercover as a student in the late 1970s when he was 22 years old. In this story we meet the students and teachers-including one who said pizza deliveries really did happen. And some said Mr. Kay was the inspiration for Mr. Hand. He told Lorraine he was called out for being too strict with kids.

It's crazy how much older people used to look. 10 year reunion means most of these people were 28 at this time. If you had said this was their 20 year reunion I would have believed it.
My mom was class of 1971 at Clairmont High School.

I had Mr. Mitchell Kay (shown in this video) for English back in 1968. He was all business and didn't put up with any classroom shenanigans, sh*tbirds or jerkoffs. He was a stickler for literacy. I think he must've had an arrangement with the principal to relocate any student that he sent to the principal's office on a disciplinary referral, because you never saw that student return after a visit with the principal.😂😂

Please that’s any high school in America and some of them looked like they were forty back then i can imagine what they look like now.
Class of '79, sure but the movie came out in the early 80's. The times were-a-changing already, in some ways.

@JaviJ: There was a Black gentleman shown around the 2:50 mark embracing what I assume to be an old friend/classmate. The demographics of San Diego were different in 1979 as compared to now (2022) or even if you compare it to the year 1990 or 2000. Also, the Clairemont area was probably less diverse than SD overall. Finally, an interesting fact is that Ritchie Valens played at the grand opening of Clairemont High in 1958.

@@condor7810San Diego's Black population from 1970 to 1980 almost doubled and we were about 10% present day we are like 5.6% percent. San Diego had school bussing from South East and East San Diego im confused why they weren't more Black and Mexican folks in the video.
I am SO GLAD I am from the 80’s high - College all from 1981- 1990 Vs today! I would never last more than 5 minutes without getting permanently banned from the school cause the BS I see being done in there. And Be Proud of It!!!!
10 year reunions are a waste of time. All reunions are a waste of time?
10 year was fun. Didn't do the 20 year. By then everyone was divorced. Why reconnect with your old HS buddies at that point in their lives?
