Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing-and least understood-people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement. Through the eyes of televangelists and small-town preachers, celebrity revivalists and everyday churchgoers, Alberta tells the story of a faith cheapened by ephemeral fear, a promise corrupted by partisan subterfuge, and a reputation stained by perpetual scandal.

I’m not able to listen to the radio much during the day but damn, Terri Gross just asks the best questions. I used to be able to listen almost every day. Great show. I miss it!

I hear him say "pained conversations" in 2016 and the only thing I think is: So your father sold the entire country into 4 years of utter garbage, and 3 years of aftermath, because god forbid you let people make a choice for their own body that, if you were actually honest with yourself, you would want to make on your own.

Living in the evangelical society he describes is my vision of hell.

The temptation to rule the world for evangelicals is as seductive as the temptation to know good and evil was for Eve.

Here in Indiana candidates run on Christian faith

How many (male…except for Beth something…) of these are there going to be…always ignoring the 40ish years before now that could not have foreshadowed this any clearer? The only real shock has been the level of crassness Evangelicals have embraced (no, I said….they’re Southern…that won’t work…It did.)

Tim was disappointed in his clergy father because he voted for Trump. His father had always told him "politics is a exercise in character" . Hi Tim. I am a Canadian observing this. Your father had a choice between Hillary and Trump. Both have questioned character. He made the wise choice of Trump over crooked Hillary.
