Afterall, pain makes up a substantial part of what would garner a fear response in a person. If game shows weren't allowed to use threat to bodily harm as a challenge there would be no water, no heights, no animals, no collison with objects, no fighting/sparring challenges etc as they all include a risk to the individual. Of course, all of this should always be undertaken with the right safety precautions and be far above board in case anything does go wrong, but these tasks often are an intrinsic part of many game shows. Afterall, pain is quite literally why animals evolve a fear reponse in the first place, to avoid a perceived threat of possibly fatal harm.
