In this Filipino car review, we take a good look at the 2023 Nissan Kicks VL e-Power and the 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross HEV to see how both of these compare against each other. The Nissan Kicks and the Toyota Yaris Cross are both full hybrid subcompact crossovers, and they are both priced at the same level. That's why a lot of people will be cross shopping between the 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross HEV and the 2023 Nissan Kicks VL e-Power. This is a close match, since the 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross HEV and the 2023 Nissan Kicks VL e-Power are in the same category. The 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross HEV uses Toyota's signature hybrid electric system, while the 2024 Nissan Kicks VL e-Power uses an electric motor that is recharged by a gasoline engine. They both use different hybrid technologies, but both are considered to be full hybrids. I was driving going to Zambales with Kicks fully loaded. Around Mayantoc Tarlac, google map suggested a faster route which I accepted.
Little did I know it will be one heck of a ride. I notice the road gets steeper and steeper. Having drove to Baguio for many times, I am confident my Kicks can do it. As minutes went by I noticed only SUVs fortuner, montero, and rough road big wheels were driving also driving the road. No small cars, vans at all. Roads get steeper and steeper and longer. I'm starting to worry if kicks can pull of the consecutive long steep roads and even Baguio's Marcos or Kennon do not even compare. In 30 minutes, I was at the top of a mountain 😂. Then rough roads high steep. I was talking to my kicks and asking how are you yet it is a piece of cake. It turns out the road is headed to kalikasan and is not yet finish. In the end I have to go back to my original route not because my kicks can't but because of the rough roads and it was close. Jeezzz google map, where did you directed me 😂😂😂.
But one thing is clear that day, Kicks smoothly drove long high steep roads fully loaded without any problem. I'm confident Yaris won't 😂😂😂.

At the top of line with its feature, the yaris is ahead by a little bit and becomes a matter of preference of whats important to the owner. However, once we compare the mid variant, with kicks mid variant having almost no difference with the Top variant, Kicks mid variant is just far ahead of the yaris mid variant. Specially the yaris FE goes down significantly. and this is gonna be the same thing happening with the lowest trim.

The kicks he set up is more useful in MM stop and go, morning and early evening traffic. It is helpful for the battery. Also nissan hev comes at a lower price point with the entry level variant at just over 1.2M. Remember hevs are just starter vehicles intended to prep us for a time the world will ban all ICE vehicles and go Full Electric. So whether we stay with ice or he vehicles now, there will come a time BOTH will be phased out since hybrid electric vehicles, whether kicks or cross, still have gas engines on them. If consideration is just to go hybrid, at over 1.5M, the TYC is just expensive despite its many features. id go for the entry or mid variant Kicks. You get a more powerful he engine on a car that is more engaging to drive.

Looks should NOT be a part of scoring. This kind of point system should only include functional features. Looks are always subjective. Even the ugliest things have someone who will love it, even the prettiest things will have someone who will hate it.
Reason to get Yaris Cross HEV:
    -more fuel efficient than Kicks
-full packed tech & safety features
    -better backseat features than Kicks
    -panoramic roof
-Toyota (most reliable in terms of quality, maintenance and parts)
    Reason to get Kicks ePower:
-still one of the most fuel efficient cars today
    -slightly bigger cargo space
    -instantaneous torque & EV feels
-a little bit more powerful than Yaris Cross HEV
    -good tech and safety features
    other things to consider:
-looks. this depends on your taste
-overall size. Yaris Cross is bigger and looks bulky. Kicks is smaller and even looks smaller than it's real size.
    -price. it's almost similar though.
    thoughts:
I like the Kicks better in looks. I like a smaller car. Yaris Cross HEV is better overall since it was developed with the Kicks in mind.
If I have money to buy and choose one, my choice would be... Nissan Kicks ePower

I agree in most of your points except the part where Kicks is just a little bit more powerful than Yaris Cross HEV... I think the power difference is significant based in their torque and HP figures, not to mention the fact that Kicks has full access to the instantaneous acceleration.

Baka po mahihirapan magbenta ang mga owners ng hybrid vehicles after some years of use. Just my opinion po.

People who shy away from hybrids cause of battery replacement - all car parts will deteriorate. It just so happens that the battery is more expensive, but the reality is it will last longer than other parts and as long as you do your due diligence and maintain the car properly. Don't treat the battery as iphones or rechargeable with a plug. You don't charge it cause the car does a better job at caring for the battery. Your only problem is the sound of regen breaking when you drive. Although I'm just a kit guy, we have a mechanic so please let the ph bring more hybrids in the country

For the people here going for the yaris x due to looks and saying it has better FE, go test drive both. You'll immediately feel how sluggish the yaris is. It's body is too big for its measly motor. I was totally disappointed with it and we were leaning towards the cross in the beginning. A hit and miss, if only they gave the yaris better torque and motor. Instead they opted to fool buyers with a better interior and bigger looking car that isn't performance oriented.
