- Alex and I have been working away on the budget paint job for his Mustang! Over the last month we have done some more bodywork and Alex is learning fast! Toward the end of the video some primer gets applied. Viewer discretion advised!
Great way to teach, knowing how to do stuff with basic tools will have him set for life. Fancy stuff just makes things easier & quicker...and easier & faster to screw up.
I'm all for fancy stuff if they're used as tools, not crutches. Starting with the basics creates the basis for proper use of the fancy stuff later.
That’s great that you’re passing your knowledge on to the younger generation!
I do enjoy the teaching side - I spent a large chunk of my airline career as a simulator instructor and check airman, the last few years working with new hires. It's satisfying. Maybe I can find the time after this to help some others if they are willing.
Old school teaching! Great video
Thanks!
My uncle taught me that you don't need no glaze to finish the straight job..
Just take a brush and keep building on top or it and it came BEAUTIFUL 😂😂😂😂 That was in the 1980s when I was in my 20s.
Heyyyy! Lacquer primer was GREAT to work with, and all my job then came out very nice.
I started painting with lacquers and enamels way back in the 80s too 😃
Starting to look like my car in high school (primer gray). Rolling on the primer is a great idea, thanks.
It works, and the paint doesn't care. Plus it saves a ton of time taping and prepping. Big bonus since we will be re-priming quite a bit to get the body straight!
Schools need to bring back automotive tech
Agree wholeheartedly!! My high school shop teacher was a teacher, mentor, and friend who taught me much more than just car repair.
Great work not everything has to be show quality perfect, make the best with what you have 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That's the plan. Thanks!
Kudos! You gotta start somewhere. Do what your budget allows and don’t listen to naysayers. Perfection is the enemy of progress. It’s already come a long way.
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this I am doing a similar backyard build on a 70 mustang. I am able to weld new metal but I do want to try rolling on primer to do most of the body work and send to a painter to block misc parts and paint.
Nothing wrong with paint rollers. Like I said in the video, the paint does not care how it's applied. Works well for primers, and can work for a catalyzed urethane made for rolling or brushing if you don't mind sanding and buffing to your final finish. Rollers won't work well with enamel finishes unless you want lots of orange peel. I'll have an explanation of why in an upcoming vid.
He’ll have fun with guide coat sanding
We've still got a ways to go before that 😂
Eastwood sells a roll on self leveling epoxy primer. Seen a few videos of people using it. They say the results are good.
Unfortunately that would completely blow the budget. We will have to save the epoxies and 2K materials for the eventual follow-on paint job when he can afford to go all out.
These methods are pretty much what I did to my Chrysler Concorde to get it ready for paint. Rolled on the primer just like that too, then wet sanded and repeat. My main mistake was spraying it with cans of spray paint because it tiger striped badly. I should've rolled it and sanded between every other coat. Oh well, it lasted a few years; the car is long gone now (crushed after it got totaled).
Spray paint can be tricky that way. I nixed the idea of spray cans for two reasons - 1. not as durable (mil thickness) as a good enamel applied traditionally, and 2. Holy cow, have you priced spray paint lately?!
i miss my 75 maverick went to college in a brand new Ford maverick 1975
I went to college in a '75 Mustang II. It had a 302 in it but was nowhere near brand new - 8 years old, rode hard and put up wet!
What color do you guys plan on painting this thing……looks like a solid platform to start from!!! Im currently in the process of getting my sons ‘67 c code mustang coupe up and road worthy (safe)…….cant wait to see whattcha guys do next, wish my son was enthuasiastic about working on his car as much as that kid is!!!!
The last good (probably 😆) repaint was black. Whoever did that one painted the jambs, and that was the color when Alex bought the car so going back with black to save the time, trouble and added expense of having to redo the jambs. Keep on your '67!
Thank you teaching this, what are you all going to do as far as paint?
I'm currently testing a few options but for now it's leaning towards an acrylic enamel, aka Rustoleum Tractor Paint. Black of course, since that was the color when Alex bought it.
@@MaverickModds I've never used the spray tractor paint but I grew-up in the middle of the midwest farm country and have spray ALOT of Tractor Paint, My dad had a mixing formula for it to thin it down to use for cars, let me find it and I'll let you know it is, so it atleast you have it. I THINK it's 6 1/2: 3/4: 3/4.
@@MaverickModds I was wrong, it's 7 parts paint, 1 1/4 parts Thinner, 3/4 parts hardner, You have to thin it out so it doesn't crinkle but you have to add less hardner so it doesn't become brittle.
I guess you do not call these cars "rustangs" in the south.
All makes rust in the south
Oh, it's got plenty of rust and rot! It just takes a few years later here. this time of year bare metal can flash rust in minutes. Ask me how I know 🤣🤣
My first car was a 71 mustang coupe 351 c 4 v man did it fly
My first car was not a '70 Mach 1 w/ 351C. I missed it by 5 minutes - my best friend got to it before me☹. We won't talk about what my first car was 😳
How can I help this young man out, I'd like to donate a little $$$ to the paint job.
You can contact me at Maverickmodds@gmail.com - I'll forward your info to Alex and you guys can connect. I'm donating materials and time, anything else would go straight to him and will only get him a better finish. Thanks!
Not sure why my email won't hyperlink - just copy/paste. Thanks!
Where did the Tree Frog go?
Ya lost me - Tree Frog?
@@MaverickModds time stamp 3:18 > 4:21 by he side marker lamp opening. the frog is gray.
@@Knonk-nh3ir I'll be a son-of-a-gun! I never knew he was there 🤣🤣🤣
The young man seriously needs to learn early to wear some type of respirator/mask when sanding
I'll pass that along to him 🙂
