Johnny, I feel that we get into a "Like" zone with our barrel/bullet combinations. It's a tolerance stacking thing, also the .224 bullet is difficult to manufacture with precision. (I let them off the hook for that) however, they are promoting accuracy with their product. There are so many variable additions to accuracy it can be mind-boggling, Now, here is the good news. Your show is un-bias in playing favorites and that is consistent. Your evaluations of bullet performance can be trusted as far as "Did my best" and that makes your CZcams show one of the best. Dave.

CFE 223 works extremely well with the 64 and 75 gr Gold Dots
This is the best and most helpful Internet resource I've ever seen on load data. I've been loading many cartridges for many 8 years. Each critical step and question was answered in this video for this cartridge and this projectile!! Thank you and keep up the good work. I’ve watched most of your videos multiple times and I still root for tight groups knowing some will be bad. These educational videos will last a loooong time.
Glad the 75 grain is coming next. 75 Grain TAP and the 75 TMJ are an cool combo. A TMJ for cheap practice, TAP for social work, same BC and Ogive shape.
Daaammmnnn, those are cooking compared to the factory load velocity I got from my 16".
I'm glad to see you are diving into the .224cal gold dots. I grabbed a few hundred 75gr GDs from midsouth a while back and so far I'm really liking them. With Power Pro Varmint and CFE223 they shoot as well as I do and, like every other GD, they have great terminal performance.
JRB your efforts are much appreciated. Got to love that 2kMR at 30.2 grains throwing a 62gr bullet 3124 fps.
I emailed Speer about the new internet data. They said the 5.56 data was collected using a 20 inch barrel and the .223 data was collected using a standard 24 inch barrel.
It looks to be soft and safe data.
The ar-15 was originally made in 20 inch barrel by the military and with the gas block placement 20inch barrel gives higher velocity than a 24 in barrel unlike a bolt action gun because of the gas port placement
Barrel lengths listed in the #15 Speer manual: 5.56 - 20 inch test barrel; 223 - 24 inch test barrel. Speer lists the barrel lengths at the beginning of the cartridge section.
"What's not to like...." indeed. As a volunteer fireman, I was in the field helping storm recovery yesterday. What a treat awaited. Three fabulous videos. Makes me want a Reloder 16 recipe for heavier .224 projectiles.

I just tested these bullets/projectiles with blc-2 and Varget, I liked the varget loads but something I learned..take my time when shooting.

I've been testing these in 5.56 both the 55 grain and 62 and had amazing results with 2000mr! Great video! Keep up the outstanding work!
I just did a work up with the 75 grain gold dots and power pro 2000mr in 5.56 and I got great results. Lake city cases, cci 41 primers, 2.26 col and 26.8 grains pp2000mr. Expander ball removed and bullet crimped. Velocity for four shots was 2777 with es and sd 0. Group at 50 yards was .350 in. Barrel is a bcm 20in.
Perfect timing. I'm picking up my TC Compass in .223 tonight. I started to wonder if you disliked Speer, because they have a lot of nice affordable bullets in .224 diameter, and I don't think I've seen you test them, till now.

The gel tests are a nice addition. Nice work, sir. Also, if you want to separate the gel from the recovered bullets, microwaving a cup of hot water and plunking them in for a few minutes is probably the easy way.
Great reloading channel, glad I found it! And Hornady reloading equipment is actually decent; on par with Lee or RCBS for sure.
Good bullet. I shot a pig a few years ago with the factory ammo loaded with this bullet. Went right through one and into another pig. Performed well enough to drop one instantly and keep the other from going anywhere until we could finish it off with another shot.
Johnny, about the rust issue. I recently invested in changing all my die cases to the Plano 1500 series Castaway Waterproof case. Each airtight semi-modular case accommodates eight dies with room for additional items (ie case holders, bullet puller collets, etc). Wal-Mart sells them for $7each.
Great Video JRB. Awesome results. I was expecting the 8208 to out perform accuracy wise over the 2000MR. Both looked real good though.
I have a pile of the 64 grain Gold Dots that were sold at RMR Reloading a year or so ago that I haven’t got around to testing yet, but this video definitely gives me some inspiration to get them loaded up. It’s my understanding that this bonded bullet is the exact same bullet as the Federal Fusion and loaded in that factory round as well.
Interesting that the factory loaded Gold dot rifle bullets all have a cannelure, but the retail components don’t have a cannelure. Nice.
Super impressed with this bullet. The factory load shows 3000FPS out of a 24” barrel. The fact you took them to over 3100 FPS and the bullet held together well and kept its accuracy is impressive.
How did the ballistics gel look? Can’t ping this video at all, but would of loved to see the permanent wound track from the bullet.

I love Speer gold dot there bonded bullets and shoot great and open up with 5 pedals that fold back and stay in tack with the copper jacket and lead core I also use Speer gold dots in my 9mm and again there bonded and open up in 5 pedals and makes a much larger hole than just a. 335 diameter one of my favorite bullets. I use them for my self defense bullet and any thing larger than coyote. They shoot about the same as nosler varmageddon bullets but don't explode on impack like varmageddon do
You mentioned rust on your dies . I have been using a product called Eezox that I get in a 4 oz. can from Amazon , and really like it . It is a clp that leaves a wet look on metals , but is dry to the touch and does cleaning , lubricating and protection from rust . One application to a die set will probably last them a lifetime . It does great in AR's too because it does not leave a film to collect residue .

The only problem I have with the micrometer is the marking are hard to see. If Hornady could make it a little easier to see for us old folks it would be immensely appreciated.

When it comes to the 5.56x45/.223 Remington, the 60-70 grain projectiles tick one of the boxes for my sense of aesthetics when it comes to defensive 5.56x45/.223 Remington ammunition.
This round seems to be a near perfect match for what I consider good defensive ammunition.

Always preferred Speer bullets as they do stick to the jackets. Price is also lower. I use 250g 35 cal Speer Hotcor for deer, drops them in their tracks.
These bullets seem great!

Use Coconut Oil to keep the rest off and much healthier option for oiling too.
Using CFE 223 for these. Loading on Dillon XL 650. Do you crimp? Using an AR platform. Would use Lee Fac crimp die. Ty for your info. Love your page!
would love to see the 300 Blackout 150 gr Gold dot tested - including gel test for expansion - supposed to expand better at lower velocity than the standard 308 150gr gold dot
When you reclaim your gell you just heat it up if I'm correct? For that gell in the back of the bullets put a torch to it for a little. Probably not worth the time but a thought. Hope you have a good day and continue making these very great and informative videos :)
I’m not sure if you still read comments from older videos, this is still a relatively new bullet. You said you’re going try new loads for this bullet, but I have seen neither hide nor hair of any gold dots since you did one video on each weight/caliber. Any plans to explore this as a hunting round in the new varmint barrel? Btw I am a patron so I’ll reach out to you at that website too.

Speer gold dot is a great bullet
I had wild deviations with Rem 7.5 primers also with IMR 8208 XBR
5.56 vs. 223: the 223 by spec has a shorter throat. Speer, in an effort by reduce liability, keeps the COL short to keep you far from the lands. (me thinks)
75grain is very nice. I shoot it with my Tikka, 8 inch twist. 3/8 ths inch groups at 100 yards using 22.5 grains of Varget. Lapua brass and a CCI 400 SRP.
I just bought a pound of 2000MR to try in my newly acquired 243LBC with a 24" bull barrel in an AR platform. (6mmAR or think 6.0Grendel) So far my max load is 31.5gr. of CFE223 behind a 90gr. Nosler accu bond (my only bullet so far) Sorry I don't have a crono.
Have you tried 2000MR in your 6.5 Grendel yet? Dumb question... Any suggestions as to max charge for the LBC? I will be calling Alliant before I start working up a load.

I was told that NATO test spec uses a 20" barrel, so assuming they followed that, it would help explain the velocity differences.

Even though 2000 MR is a slow powder, It seems to have promise with 62 and 75 grain bullets. I would love to see you revisit the hornady 62 grain bthp with 2000 MR. and AR Comp.

The 75 gr. are a great hunting bullet for medium size game, better ballistically also
I like your press. I have 2 Rock crushers set up but having a turret with 7 would be great and get extra heads to switch calibers. Not inexpensive though.

Johnny, new viewer and subscriber. First of all great videos, very informative. Your videos are why I purchased a TC Compass. I do have a question. I know you have mentioned that you use a beam scale. I use one as well. RCBS 505. Have you ever had your beam scale get stuck and won't move while trickling powder. As I'm trickling more and more powder, it won't move until I touch it. Then it will move correctly. Have you ever had any issues like that.
To my understanding the CCI 41 Primer has been discontinued. I just found 8,000 of them and bought them all since they are no more.
That's delicious. Looks like I'm going to start reloading this round instead of buying factory. The factory velocities pretty much suck.
Did you have any of the coating shave off when you were seating them. I had a tiny bit.. I was loading the 168 30 cal gold dots

are you crimping or just seating the bullets. being an ar just woundering if you should crimp for the semi auto rifle. i dont crimp for my browning bar and the bullets never move.
I want to see the speer TNT bullets performance. 50gr,52gr,55, and ether a 75 or 77gr. You could send the light ones screaming probably. Also see if there is jacket separation.

So, I would assume that for 223 it’s a 24” and 5.56 is 20”. Just because that’s what Black Hills does. I’m thinking about this for 5.56. Prob best though to chrono the factory load and see what you get for comparison. Just saying for future reference. Also I wish I could find a seating AND crimping die that was micrometer type adjustment. Also, wonder what the gel would look like from a 10.3”
the reason for the different COAL is because the jump of a 5.56 is different than the jump of a .223 ? Maybe ?

We use their .40 cal rounds at work and have had devestating results when we unfortunately have to use them.

Never mind; I found out that you are using 5.56 data. I was concerned, because I thought I had .223 and 5.56 brass mixed, but then I remembered the only .223 ammo I used was nickel plated. So now I'm going to try 5.56 grain counts, because .223 was giving me horrible velocities.

Hi Gary, he has a few videos covering the crimp tension and also testing bullet OAL changes in an AR. The rounds typically get longer not shorter in an AR from the case stopping in the chamber and bullet and power inertia!

Could you test the new Hornady 62gr match HP. These are new and so far can only be gotten from Mid South Shooter's Supply at 500 for 52 dollars. I shot them using the Hornady data for the 62gr FMJ and they are , I found, very accurate in my match rifles with RL15 and CFE223.
He did a pretty in depth multi-video review those quite a while ago. Go to his page and search through his videos. I'm glad he did too because I had been wondering why nobody was making ~60gr HPBTs when I came accross his video. And yeah, they are pretty sweet shooting ;-)

panda yes I have, shot a 200ish give or take 20lbs and yanked the shot and nicked front of stomach. Hit the very widest part of the ribs and got stopped in between 2 ribs pushing on the hide. 40yrd shot deer jumped about 2 times took a few steps, leaned against a tree and tumbled down a bank.

@JRB Do you have any experience with Cavity Back Bullets for 300 blkout/308? They seem to claim to be able fit a little more powder in the case compared to other copper solids.
Chris Thomas Todd over at lone star boars used to load them in 6.8 and 308 for hog hunting. In a lot of his old videos that’s what he’s using to kill hogs
It'd be pretty cool to reload.
It is fun but has 2 drawbacks makes you crazy and can be expensive.
