Tesla Model Y Road Trip AND We Drove It Like a Regular Car (Part 1)

- Can you take a Tesla Model Y on a road trip like a regular car? No complex planning, just pick the destinations and go. Using "A Better Route Planner" as the only tool, our family embarked on a 10-day road trip, traveled across eight states and covered more than 2,300 miles to prove this is indeed possible. We picked all the attractions, destinations and hotels without considering proximity to a Tesla or EV charger.
Please join us on this trip, visit all the attractions we went to and witness first hand what's it like to road trip in a Tesla Model Y. The trip wasn't problem free, but it's much easier than we thought. (Part 2 & 3 will be uploaded soon)
For anyone new to the Tesla world, here are a few things you'll need to know:
1. SoC = State of Charge = Battery Level.
2. ABRP = A Better Route Planner. This is a very popular 3rd party Tesla/EV route planner where you can enter waypoints when Tesla's navigation can't.
3. Charging Speed will decrease as your the SoC becomes higher. Sometimes it's faster make two stops charging to a lower SoC than a single stop to a higher SoC.
4. Most of our stops were based on what ABRP and/or Tesla navigation suggested.
5. We drove "normally" with highway speeds between 70 and 80 MPH.

You guys stopped way more often than we did on our recent road trip last month DC-MT-DC...usually never more than 2 per day....3 tops. But we also always overcharged the recommended amount. Although I used ABRP off line, we more depended on the car's Navigation function to guide us. And sometime while underway, we would cancel and restart Navigation and it would give us a new further away recharge stop which was cool. Using cruise. control is much more efficient. The 93 memorial was incredible. And on our way back, Taliesin and Oak Park were also great. We didn't try to get to Falling Waters. FLW was a controversial character I was to learn. Thanks pal! So we tried both doing it 1 stop per Tesla Nav and 2 stops per ABRP. We found the overall time was shorter doing 2 stops because the batteries charge faster from low SoC to 50%. However when we waited 10-20 min at a second charger that just ate up all the savings.

He invented the steel skyscraper, when he was an "apprentice" with Louis Sullivan, ran off with a patron's wife [showing him untrustworthy], left his wife with 5-6 kids, lousy with money, started a great movement of architecture different 4 times during his life, started a school to teach other younger architects and did 90% of his work after the age of 70, making him a hero of the senior citizen movement! 3:29 you were driving through Middlesex township . . . that new Sheetz is my goto coffee stop. Another couple miles Southbound on 81 you would pass N94 and wouldn't even realize it unless someone had just taken off :)

Yes the 21" are great! I have over 22K miles on them and the treads are still excellent.

Great video. Love your videos. The charger bring down and you having to backtrack is why I say we need way more chargers. I don’t think the cars need more range. Personally I think we need way more chargers. The cars charge so fast from 0-50%. If there were 3 times as many chargers, the. We could flippantly travel and if a charger is down we just go to another station down the road.
I am surprised some large gas station chain hasn’t inked a deal with Tesla to install chargers at all their gas stations. My favorite super chargers are the ones at gas stations or near a Starbucks where you can easily go to the restroom and get something to eat/drink.

Thanks Robert! Yes I agree the car has plenty range that will exceed my bladder on a road trip...lol. Aside from the charger being down, crowding is another issue to add more chargers. As Tesla sells more cars, this will become an issue. Since this video, I know there are 3 new SC stations that opened up around me...hopefully this trend will continue. @@SlowAsianDriver there is no doubt, the range outlasts my bladder. I have a friend that wants 500-600 miles of range so he can drive that distance without stopping. I told him that his bladder can’t make it that long 😂!

I don’t have a Tesla, yet, so I don’t understand why you needed to stop at SC four times in one day. Please explain. I commute 120 miles round trip daily on fwy 101 and 405. If MYP range is 303 why so much SC in one day?

Great question!
Just like a regular gas car, 303 miles is the "rated" miles. Pending how you drive, the realistic range at 100% charge is around 270-280 miles on the MYP. In order to maintain battery health and minimize degradation (i.e. a 3 year old iPhone's battery doesn't last as long), you would normally charge the car to 80%~90% or about 216 ~ 230 miles - which is more than enough for your daily commute.
Now let's talk about why the frequent stops on this trip. There are two primary factors: 1. Tesla's nav system and 2. Charging Speed.
1. Tesla's Nav System doesn't offer you "waypoints". So if you are going from Point A to Point B the car will let you know where to stop for charging and you will arrive at Point B with say 10% of battery. Now, if you need to go to Point C...BUT there isn't a super charger (SC) in between...then you would need to back track to the SC between Point A & B. Now hold on to that thought for a moment and we'll come back to it.
2. Charging Speed: Tesla Battery is like a bucket of water. When it's empty you can turn on the hose to max and no water will spill out. As the bucket gets fuller, you can't fill it as fast without risking spillage. So charging from 5% to 50% at a SC it's lightning fast. But the charging speed slows down as the battery becomes full and really slows down once you hit 80% or more.
Now let's coming the two factors and introduce the awesome third party app called "A Better Route Planner" (ABRP). This app can manage your entire trip with waypoints. It will know if there's a SC between Point B & Point C. plus it will calculate the LEAST amount of traveling time between the points based on charging speed and other conditions. For example, let's say you need to cover around 500 miles - a single charging stop will get you there, but you are essential driving the car to almost empty then need to charge it to almost full. Let's say the total charging time is 40 minutes with 1 stop. ABRP will advise you that by making 2 SC stops each time top it off to 55%-60% at about 15 min per charge for a total of 30 minutes, it's still quicker than a single 40 minutes charge. Also remember when someone is parked next to you, your SC speed slows down by 50% (b/c two SC stalls charge a phase). If the SC station is full, it's better to go to a less crowded one and ABRP will give you real time info on that. Let's say the next day I need to go to another destination, ABRP will ask you to make an extra charging stop to "top off" the battery so you don't have to back track.

About the adjacent stall etiquette. You didn't precise if it was version 2 or version 3 But only version 2 stalls share power with their neighbor. i.e. 2A and 2B share power. 3A and 3B share power. If you were parked in 3A and he pulled into 2B it wouldbt be an issue. Those 2 stalls dont share a power cabinet. Also this doesnt apply to version 3 chargers distinguished by the thinner cables. In V3, cabinets are powered independently no sharing. So its ok to park adjacent.

The problem with Model Y is that charge really depreciates if you are driving in snow or rain or windy also potholes. And when you are with family you cannot avoid luggage which further puts pressure on electric drivetrain. Arriving on next super chargers with super low charge is risky with family especially on a road trip into new to driver locations.
Low temperature definitely effects range. I lose about 10% normal range (25 miles) in the sub 30F weather. Thankfully there are a lot of SC coming online. My wife who gets nervous with everything came home with 5% charge yesterday and said “no sweat, I knew I can go to any of the 3 SC around here.” She likes to live on the edge. Lol.
What Tesla Model do you have? Standerd range, Long Range or performance model?

You may need to get a chadamo or ccs adapter and go to electrify America.
Do have a CCS adapter but didn’t find one fast enough near by. EA has roughly 1/2 of Tesla Supercharging network as of beginning of the year…but are growing fast.

My garage is 10’ 7”. I have a direct drive side mounted garage door opener with the door rails extended as high as possible to the ceiling.
Ok mine is 9’ 6”.

Have you tried to sell on the Tesla Motor Club's forum or FB Tesla Long Island page? Btw, are you switching out both tire and wheels or just getting slight bigger front tires and keeping the 21"?

@@House6409 now Tesla is going to open up its SC to other manufacturers, I can only imaging there will be more demand for these. I've never had to wait for a SC before but on this trip I had to a few times.
@@SlowAsianDriver Aside from the range anxiety experienced on that trip, I thought the unplanned hiccups really enhanced the video for us viewers on the reality of EV road trips. Definitely liked the urinal example of parking next to someone at a SC.
What was the total cost of the whole trip using charging stations if you don’t mind me asking?
It was free because I have a lot of supercharging miles. If I had to pay for the charges it would been $116 for a total of 20 supercharges.
Driving like a regular car means being able to drive 300+ miles and refueling. This is the main downside of a EV.
Way too many stops and time. It’s okay if that’s the way anyone travels. But most people want to get to their destination in as little time as possible. Which means less time on the road. I believe that when these EV’S REACH 400+ miles in range and no more than 20 minutes 100% charging will they become usable. All of these videos I find very informative but they highlight the main downside of long distance travel in a EV. Tesla seems to be the only vehicle that can come close to a ICE vehicle,only because of its charging network. If only Tesla has LUCIDS range.

It was our first EV road trip…printout was a backup. Ended up not using it after the 2nd day.

Lol. Well, it's pretty darn good. Definitely takes longer than a gas car with the stops, but the Full Self Driving makes the drive a breeze. We did 13 hours on the last day and we were not even tired after.
