  • The last RAV4 wasn't much of an off-road machine. Sure, the AWD system was just as capable as the base AWD system in a Cherokee, but the rest of the RAV just wasn't set up with even mild trails in mind. The new RAV4 is an entirely different animal. With 8.6 inches of clearance (the same as found in the most-capable Cherokee model), improved overhangs and the only limited slip rear differential in the segment, the new RAV4 Adventure can quite simply go more places than the competition... Except for the Jeep. Even with all the changes, this isn't a RAV4 rock crawler and that's fine by me. With the new model launched for 2019, we don't expect any changes for 2020.

    Although not available yet, we know that the upcoming TRD version of the RAV won't add much in terms of off-road ability. It's more of a styling package on the RAV4. Still, this is all the off-road ability 90% of CUV shoppers will ever need.

    • @DaRazorback
      @DaRazorback Před 5 lety +2

      Alex, won't it be a TRD off-road? I thought that they didn't announced it as an actual TRD Pro.

    • @imjashingyou3461
      @imjashingyou3461 Před 5 lety +2

      Seems like a missed opportunity and diluting the trd name. Would it really be that hard to have a different intake, exhaust, and tune to make maybe 15 more hp/tq, as well as give a better departure angle, a front skid plate, as well as the tires. Hell go even further add a rear diff skid plate and you'll have a vehicle with 95% of the stock jeeps capability.

    • @Asianman02
      @Asianman02 Před 5 lety +6

      The upcoming Trd package actually comes with different spring and damping package that is to provide more wheel travel over the current adventure model. The wheels get a decrease in diameter while being wrapped with all-terrain tires that have taller sidewalls for more impact absorption and flex. One thing I'd like to note that I didn't hear mentioned in your review and in most other reviews, is that the adventure trim does come with a softer tuned suspension package compared to the rest of the lineup. I own an adventure and absolutely love the driving dynamics of this vehicle especially in the sport mode. Great review as always Alex, keep up the good work!

I live 35 km out of town on seriously nasty roads, then up a steep, twisty, canted hill road. I’m confident the Trail will be fine. If I needed more muscle, I’d buy a truck or serious off roader. of course Toyota Rav4 wont dethrone the 4 runner. But all generation Rav4 were very capable. First Gen at some insane departure angles for offoading, some claim it is the best offroading Rav4 because of those departure angles and weight. I had a 3rd Generation, that was a tank. It snowed in Canada 15 inches, all the car were getting stuck. My Rav4 went out in that deep snow with the trucks. They are extremely versatile units, and New Generation is getting over 30mpg and has torque vectoring. It is an impressive direction for the Rav4. Mine saved me many harsh winters. I would buy one again.

    Six weeks ago I took a Forester base model out for a drive, about five months ago sat in a new Rav4, the Rav4 felt a bit tight inside compared to the Forester, but I still liked it. Between the three my first pick would be the Forester, but I picked another option and leased an Outback base model for a little less. I don't off road more than a rare trip down a dirt path that even a front wheel drive CUV could handle. My reason for having AWD is snow, our winters on the shore of lake Erie can be very difficult.

I can't help but compare this to a Forester, which I love too, but can't get past possible reliability with cvt/oil consumption not resolved. I need this purchase to be as reliable as possible for daily light off road use with good mileage and I'll keep well past 100k like my other older Rav's and CRV. I still wonder if the CRV works in AWD , but multiple video reviews show the crv awd system is not up to par with the Adventure system or Forester. Thanks for any help.

      Tom Liu that’s naturally aspirated and includes port injection so will be reliable in the long run compared to their turbocharged direct injected counterparts. Keep in mind that most in this segment have 2.4-2.5L NA. The Toyota combines direct injection and port injection. I drive a CX5 but Toyota is doing their thing.

    I slimmed mine down to two if them. The Adventure trim, and the xse. The adventure is more for the outgoing one and more off road oriented (slightly) but the xse hybrid is faster and more quite and more focused for road driving. But this gen RAV is really impressive. The last gen one was my least favourite out of all. Nice review

    What makes the Aventure RAV4 tow more than all other RV4 versions? Does it has a bigger radiator, a transmission cooler (other models don't?), a stiffer body? Something has to be different between the Aventure vs others models of RAV4.

Maybe someday that will change. I like the look of this adventure model but when we can the wife says we need a van. Van's are practical but probably not as fun. Although about 5 years ago when we had a Pontiac Montana it got stuck in the snow a couple of times. We normally don't get as much snow as we did that year. I am inclined to disagree slightly. I have taken mine to "that next level of capability". It's called aftermarket parts. Installed a 2" lift kit and a metal skid plate from TORQ Engineering. Installed a tow hook through my local custom shop. Put beefier tires. My Rav has been rutting, mudding, crossed streams and climbed super rocky hills; almost everything just shy of rock crawling. It is very possible. Know your vehicle and understand it's limitations and purchase a few aftermarket parts and you can pull out some amazing stuff in a TRD. It does not have to be just a soft trail vehicle. Do not buy a Jeep or you will Just Empty Every Pocket.

      Right Lane Hog It’s not just an issue of the engine. The suspension, frame and transmission would need to be able to do that. Plus, it’s still a front-biased vehicle. That tongue weight would reduce front wheel traction at higher speeds when the rear disconnects.

    I own a 07 RAV. The "all wheel drive" is not that capable. Okay in the snow, but not much else. My vehicles must have 3500 lbs or better towing capability, so that will be a factor in deciding what I purchase. The new one with an improved 4WD system is worth considering. It does look nicer than the previous model.
