At 8yrs old my son got invited to Ripken.. spoke to our coach and he said it’ll be fun for him but it’s really nothing until he gets into the high school age games. I wasn’t ready to spend all that money either for summer ball.

The camp or showcase attended needs to be commensurate with the level of college you realistically can expect to attend. And you absolutely need to have a tool (or tools) to show off.
In my son's case, his tool was hit for power. At a showcase, several colleges saw him and invited to fall camps (he landed at one ultimately). But all the other showcases leading up to that were a waste of time since the tool didn't develop in earnest until after his junior year HS.
And if you aren't going to a D1 school, then there's no point going to a D1 camp (unless you want to gauge where you stand)! Especially now with the portal. I wish every 11U-13U travel parent would hear this.
Do you see value in establishing baseline showcase metrics to show skill progression? We didn't do this, my opinion is mixed.

Thank you 🙏 Chris for sharing your experience and thoughts on this topic ! I truly appreciate you taking the time to write this message. I feel in todays college landscape , it is better for athletes to focus on skill set development and strength well into Sophomore year of high school , then get a TRUE evaluation from a trust MLB scout or former college player/ coach . Identify weaknesses and make sure that your skill set matters the level of play your athlete desires to play at. 2.3% of HS baseball athletes play at D 1 level

Amen this fantastic. My son is playing in the babe Ruth league and lovely it. We have teams asking for him to play that are charging like 4k 😮 plan to play its total nonsense and he is just focused on his development. On occasion will go to a baseball trading camp at college and he gets little pieces of knowledge to help him provide by the coaching stuff. No games no radar goes just baseball.

Very informative. Thanks again! Did you do a video on the Perfect Game clause that is on Twitter about retaining a portion of NIL for an athlete that signs the form to be in their tournaments? Its hard to tell if its fake or real, and not that I think my son is a future MLB star, but I know parents that are opting out of perfect game because of this.

What does it mean when a college doesn't even ask you to attend a camp? Some pretty big schools broke NCAA rules by sending recruitment questionnaires to my kid last year, telling him to just fill it out. This was during the quiet period, and my kid wasn't even in high school yet.

    • @coachbeede

Most if not ALL college programs send mail to High School athletes but are worded properly and in accordance with current rules . I do not think in today’s college landscape any university would violate contact rules via the mail or email .

My son is going through the recruiting process and in video you spoke about showcases. I refuse to pay these recruiting services but am getting emails that seem to be targeted at my son. These emails from coaches are about their (school) individual camps, should these also be looked upon as a money grab? Have lots of questions.
