I don’t even think Eminem is a top 100-150 rapper to be honest. Maybe somewhere in the top 200 range? I think I put Fat Joe above him lol. He was a noteworthy rapper in the beginning of his career, but nothing puts him in that category of goat level and his influence was detrimental. He simultaneously influenced both cornball mumble rappers and goofy “woke” rappers. The best contribution was signing 50, even it was for street credibility and in turn he got Eminem’s huge base to buy his music. Also, I prefer the OG Dead Wrong. I always thought Eminem’s voice was annoying on that song.

It becomes ingrained. This can never happen for Eminem and I think that’s a reason why his fans are so rabid.

The beauty of music is that it is all subjective and everyone has different tastes in music. I’m a big Eminem fan but I understand why you wouldn’t like Eminem a lot. He’s not for everyone, and it sucks being a fan of him because his fans like to overrate Eminem wayyy too much.

Eminem has always been a respectably dope lyricist. '99-'01 Em was untouchable and that's easily agreeable.
The problem with him is he's desperately trying to prove his relevancy post-peak by consistently reminding us of his reign in 2000 including digging up the tricks he pulled on the pop singers (Christina Aguilera, boy bands) and using them now on today's rappers (Tyler the Creator, Mumble Rap, Migos) in a generation where the music industry has dramatically changed. It's to the point he's making himself the joke of Hip Hop.

I am 20 years old, and I came across Eminem when I was in fourth grade! Not gonna lie, I was inspired, and I thought he was great! And not gonna lie, I'm still a huge fan of his old music. Ya see, the biggest thing about Eminem is the audience he connects to. For example, " Cleaning Out My Closet" speaks to those kids who had broken homes growing up. There is a humility aspect to him, and when rap had an "image", he broke that mold. As I grew up, I started writing my own music, and took elements of him storytelling and honesty. Now, when I started writing, I didn't want to be a "rapper"! I wanted to be a "wordsmith". I think he is a great song-writer, which is why he has more of a main-stream appeal than other white rappers that are better than him, such as RA The Rugged Man or Vinnie Paz. Now rapping ability wise, I think you definitely hit the nail on the head, where a lot of people fall in love with the niche of artists that do with Eminem do. I think that pen for pen, there are a lotttttt of rappers that can SMOKE Eminem, but they fly under the radar because such consumers aren't searching artists that have no hits. The biggest thing for commercial rappers is dumbing down your writing so it can have mass appeal. The best and most successful commercial lyricists are able to find a middle-ground: to be able to write simple enough to reach a wide audience, but still be complex enough to satisfy your rapper fans. Artists such as Canabis, Big Pun, Mos Def, Black Thought, Big L, Inspectah Deck, GZA, Method Man, RedMan, Jadakiss, etc wouldn't give Eminem a run for his money...THEY ARE STRAIGHT ROBBING AND SMOKING HIS ASS!!! Same thing for Lil Wayne!!! It's funny, but to a naked eye, he sounds sooooooo complex. And also give him wayyyyyy too much credit! He is praised for his Multisyllabic rhyming, but a lotttt of rappers do it better such as Immortal Technique, Pun, Big L, Rakim, Diabolic, Celp Titled, Chino XL.(last two are white...check them out) Then when its time to break down what is Eminem saying and the bars....there's not really a lot to work with. Sooooo many artists do what Eminem does, a lot even better, but because they didn't have such the massive machine of Interscope Records or couldn't write songs that people could sing a long to, they can never reach the success of Eminem.

I wouldn’t say that he always sucked because he was good from 1997-2003 and released good albums like SSLP, MMLP and The Eminem show with good songs . I never really liked The real slim shady as it was kind of cringe and I never really liked those unnecessary attacks towards Britney and NSYNC . But in that era Eminem had songs like Rock bottom, The way I am , Sing for the moment , Lose yourself , Stan , Soldier which are definitely some really good songs . But after that he never released anything that good although Relapse and MMLP2 were decent but his recent works in Revival , Kamikaze and MTBMB are literally unlistenable (except for a few tracks) with his poor flow and voice, corny bars and extremely poor production . With this kind of discography Eminem is definitely far from being the GOAT, let alone being in the top 20 .

SSLP is a classic to me. The parody horrorcore shit over those sparse beats was dope and still sounds dope to me. Obviously it's a super white record, but on SSLP it was a more genuine white trash trailer park thing that has an authenticity/rawness/charm that's nowhere to be found in the rock-rap whiny shit that dominates his catalog from MMLP and on.
Idk if the Bass brothers would have been enough for a second album but, again, there's a charm there that's absent from the overproduced beats on MMLP and beyond. It's kind of like how (in my opinion) Ras Kass was at his best over the sparse beats on Soul On Ice.
Also the fact Screw mixed a couple songs from SSLP gives it more credence in my head
But I gotta take some of that back cuz SSLP is Eminem biting Cage and Cage did the crazy white boy shtick infinitely better

Kendrick, Cole, Kanye, Wayne, Drake, Future, Childish, etc have all dropped extremely good music within the last 10 years. Way better than Eminem’s last 7 albums. It’s fucking ridiculous that people call him the goat based on the first 3 albums. Those albums aren’t really that good in hindsight. I think he had a place and I definitely think he had skills as far as something new I don't think that. As an 80s kid I already grew up with the legends. Hardcore gangster rap, to comical rap, to radio ready rap like Run DMC or sir mixalot even heavy metal rap like body count or public enemy with anthrax had already been done. Biggie and Tupac had even done their thing and hip hop was all over the radio. Then em came, he was different only in the frame of he was aggressive, obnoxious and easy to sell to anybody that liked rap. I like em but I don't think he is above criticism. I also would not bump some of his stuff as it just sounds teeny bopper, 14 year old schoolyard bully B.S. Still he has skills and he has made couple tracks that have to be mentioned as some of the best of all time like the Stan song.

I mean, he made the word stan with his song stan which is used everywhere now, he has his impact, especially with lose yourself and rap god being the most memorized, maybe the songs just didn’t stick in your head like it did for the majority of people, which I could understand, but 99% of people would be able to continue Lose Yourself and Rap God if you just gave them a few words, you also might’ve been born just before or just after the time where it would’ve stuck which also I could understand, and yeah he isn’t too deep mostly going with metaphors but he just speaks whats on his mind and makes top selling songs in 13 minutes (which, I mean, try to make a hit song in 13 minutes, it isn’t easy) he isn’t meant to make you dig into his lyrics to get his meaning some like the Slim Shady songs meant to represent the worst in him, which you can tell on the surface, which is good for those cause not everything has to be deep or we’d be living in the Mariana trench lol, but you get what im saying right? Eminem is one of those rappers who I respect as a lyricist but hardly ever listen to, and don't ever place him anywhere in my favorites list or even greatest of all time list for some reason, even though I know that he's better than certain rappers I'd place higher than him, I guess something about him never clicked for me.
He's not really that great of a lyricist imo, he's just good at ramming words that rhyme together, and it's not that hard. His music is mostly bad, he isn't on that level because he has never made an album that has more then 4 great songs on it.
