I am going to be 60 next year and I saw Yes "in the round " in the late 70's and it was fantastic. Yes in my day wasn't for everyone. It was a band that dug deeper. So many musical greatness was around in those yrs....I look back now and see I believe these decades were the best!!

Hi Mary, I'll be 60 next year also (January to be exact) and I remember seeing Yes "In the round" concert in Atlanta Ga. The local radio station (96Rock) conducted a poll and Yes won for best concert in Atlanta 1978. Bands like Yes, Tull, ELP and Kansas made being a teenager in the '70's something special.

There are sections in the base intro where he spins intervals you would not have expected and they completely throw you for a loop. You expect the cord to be resolved and then he throws in a minor 6th or a 7th and it completely changes the entire feel and changes the tempo. And Bruford behind him is amazing, not showy or overpowering, just the perfect accompaniment. It's so rare for a rock piece to be almost exclusively rhythm section (and mellotron) for such an extended period.

Another of those bands is "Jethro Tull". Tull's magnum opus is "Thick as a Brick", which is a single song taking up both sides of an album, about 43 minutes long. I know I wouldn't easily commit to something that big for a first review, so how 'bout you do a live video that is much shorter (13:29) that will give you a feel of the song, as well as an introduction to the band. After that, you can decide if you want to do the full studio version, or not. Barriemore Barlow on drums.

Yes was around for a long time, like we're talking decades. And they went through a lot of changes along the way, in terms of both style and personnel. Prog Rock bands like Yes changed the musical environment, and Yes changed in response. So if you want to really understand Yes it helps to look at when a particular song came out, because early Yes like this is very different from 80's Yes. And rightly so, because it was a different time and a different environment.
Or you can just groove to the awesome music. That works too.

  • @67Svenski
    @67Svenski Před 3 lety

Steve Howe was voted "Best Rock Guitarist" 5 years in a row by Guitar Player Magazine. In the 70's there were dozens of legendary guitar players, but Steve Howe won. Record sales exploded by word of mouth without the help of radio, due to a sub-culture of young people that did not want what the radio stations were providing (3 minute boy-girl love songs). Radio has not changed, still 3 minute songs. In the early 1970's, recording equipment became much less expensive and many recording studios (labels) open up, and were looking for artists. The recording studios let the artists do whatever they wanted, and some like Yes, did 20 minute songs. Bands that did 3 minute songs to sell on the radio were considered as "sold out to the man'", an expression used by the younger crowd at that time. Prog rock bands did not care about that and they wrote music as they wished. You will notice that these longer songs have time to develop "Tension" in the music (by dissonance, strange time signatures, dynamics, etc.). Tension levels build and resolve, which to the listener, is pure rapture. When listening to this genre, it is good to note when they are purposely creating tension and when this tension is resolved into something beautiful. Example of good tension can be found in a song called "Starless" by King Crimson (guitar solo is a single note which in the context of the song creates huge tension, which is resolved only in the last couple of chords of the song. I recommend Firth of Fifth by Genesis and Dark Side of the Moon (whole album) by Pink Floyd and more by Yes (Close to the Edge, Gates of Delirium, Ritual, Heart of the Sunrise, to name a few). Note, most of the radio bands do not have the skill level to produce this kind of music, although there are some exceptions. I like your channel so far, and I like it when the reviewers read Wikipedia prior to listening, to educate themselves about the song...it makes it easier to compile your consensus of the song and educate the listener at the same time.

I love all those key changes at the end, too. And the transition at 5:04 to the Howe guitar solo, from Jon's voice and Wakeman's organ is intense!

So far, you've gone the "easy" stuff. Yes was for nearly a decade, the most complicated and syncopated of all rock bands, yet because of their musicianship and ability to incorporate elements of rock, jazz, classical and funk, commercial music.
It's why they' ve stood the test of time.
I've seen several other suggestions, they're all fine but for me the finest piece they ever crafted was their rendition of Simon and Garfunkel's America, an 11 minute exploration of musical styles spanning 50 years.
Almost everything (even bits of Tormato) done until 1980 is well worth the effort.

I think you would like their longer compositions. They are very classical in nature. Kind of like a three movement symphony or concerto. Here are the songs like that that are 18+ minutes:
Ritual (the live version from Yesshows is the best)
    Close to the Edge (studio)
    Gates of Delirium (studio)
    Revealing Science of God (studio)

If you like jazz fusion and drums then Yes' Relayer is the album for you. In particular, SOUND CHASER and THE GATES OF DELIRIUM. This was Yes at their most subliminally extreme.

Have you listened to the Close to the Edge album, Chod? It's my favourite and the first LP I bought with my own saved up pocket money when I was 10 years old (my older cousin said it should be the first record in my collection). I also bought Showaddywaddy's Greatest Hits at a budget price on the same day. It has NOT stood the same test of time as Close to the Edge. Damn, I was one weird kid.

This is a great song for headphones. With so many great things going on with guitar, keys, and vocals, headphones really allow one to hear how tight Chris Squire (bass) and Bill Bruford (drums) were. Totally in the pocket.
Enjoying watching your Yes discovery. Fortunately you haven't really even scratched the surface. This is going to be good. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

I really appreciate your reactions to the music my generation grew up listening to. If you like early Yes you need to listen to some early Genesis, anything off the albums recorded from 70 to 76.. I would suggest you start with "Firth of Fifth" off "Selling England by the Pound" you won't be disappointed.

I wonder how he would react to Sound Chaser? (It's my ringtone) It's not the make or break piece like Topographic, but it's very polarizing; either you love it with a passion or are frightened by the complexity and intensity.
