    My favorites:
    - Averland Sunset (of course)
    - Mephiston Red (Like Averland Sunset but red)
    - Zandri Dust (Incredible coverage--great as a base for yellows, as a khaki color, and as a unifying tone)
    - Caliban Green (you said it well enough)
    - Rakarth Flesh (A neutral off-white with great coverage--it's incredibly useful for neutral-colored clothing and as an undercoat for white)
    Honorable mentions:
    - Agrax Earthshade (I just like it better than nuln oil, it's great for nearly every color and for grimy and gritty painting styles)
    - Warboss Green (Reminds me of goblin green.)

      Great list, some of my favourites on there! Honestly Khorne Red and Mephiston Red could be the same choice for me as I regularly use them in tandem, I really love those GW reds! I might need to try out some Zandri Dust, it's been on my radar for some time 😁
      Also Warboss Green, YES! I use that when I'm doing Oldhammer goblin green bases!

      Haha very true, Rhinox is probably the most flexible of all of them! Caliban is a nice green, I predominantly highlight it with Warpstone Glow because I like rich greens 😊

    Personally, I will never spend a penny on GW paints again until they move to dropper bottles but if I had to list 5 paints that are critical for me:
    Vallejo Game Air: Silver

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před rokem +1

      The pots are not for everyone, I'm used to dealing with them so it's not too bad. I would use droppers if they ever changed, but the pots don't annoy me enough to go through the process of transferring them.
      This is a good list, I like Vallejo paints too, and use them on occasion. I really should try that silver you recommended, I use GW metallics a lot of course, and they're fine, but they're not perfect, which is why there are none on this list 😆

    • @Geekmandem
      @Geekmandem Před rokem +2

      @@TheHobbyGrotto Used GW paints since I was a kid. I don't feel the need for a dropper, though I do kinda get why people like them. For me, I just stick to GWs line of colours as I feel safe :D

    Very good selection! If I had to think of my favourite GW paints (excluding shades and technicals), my list would probably look like:
    -Mephiston Red (probably my favourite red, close with Scale75's Inktensity Red)
    -Naggaroth Night (like your green, I love my purples. Honourable mention, Xereus Purple).
    -Steel Legion Drab (my go to mid brown).
    -Emperor's Children (like purple, I loooove pinks. Fulgrim pink is also a close contender).
    -Barak-Nar Burgundy (my new favourite colour, love it on cloth and trim).

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před 2 lety +2

      Thankyou, man it was hard choosing though! 😁
      Those are all great colours you mentioned. It was a toss up between Khorne Red and Mephiston Red for me, both fantastic colours, I just use Khorne Red a bit more for things like gore and deeper reds. Honestly all the GW reds are pretty great. I'm also a big fan of Naggaroth Night, I actually use that quite a bit, it was definitely a close contender for my list!

    • @Sturmensky
      @Sturmensky Před 2 lety +1

      @@TheHobbyGrotto I might need to check out Khorne Red! I'm a Mephiston guy, currently, but I'm always game to trying new paints.
      I might need to check it out for gore, though. I've been using a mix of Mephiston Red and Rhinox Hide - using watered down layers and adding more Mephiston as I go - to get the mix of dried blood and not-quite-dried blood.
      (Speaking of blood, if you ever want it to look chunky and viscera-filled, I recommend Typhus Corrosion with Blood for the Blood God atop. If you want some extra depth, painting red-brown over the typhus, then putting BftBG atop works really well too)

    • @TheHobbyGrotto

  • @Sturmensky
    @Sturmensky Před 2 lety +2

    Heeey a FACE!
    Regarding the paints you mentioned, I need to check out some of those; Averland in particular! I've been using the next colour up and it's brutally thin. Though - being a lot thinner - it has forced me to base coat my yellows with orange, which has helped a lot. Hardly ideal, but as a result, I've learned how useful a bit of orange (ideally a thin glaze) can be in making a rich yellow colour.
    Rhinox Hide's a great one! Just picked up a new bottle. Great for really dark leather, mud, hair - anything like that; while Caliban Green is just... I love it. It's extremely rich, yet also very easy to tint. If there's any new painters looking to see the impact of mixing in a different colour for highlights, I HIGHLY recommend Caliban Green as the base.
    And nuln oil's just... useful. Period. Though I prefer Agrax Earthshade these days. It provides a smidge more warmth and I prefer a slightly dirtier look.
    ...now if I could just stop the bottles from crudding up.

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před 2 lety +1

      Averland is awesome, if you're referring to Yriel Yellow I know what you mean. I generally only use that to highlight Averland because it's thin and finicky, but it's still a nice yellow. It gives some further saturation to Averland and brightens it up. I usually work up my yellows over browns, but orange is equally good for yellow, so many different ways you can do it, that's the cool thing about yellow!
      Glad to see you agreed with the other paints, honestly Agrax and Nuln Oil are kindred spirits, it just depends on the vibe you want for the model 😊

    • @Sturmensky
      @Sturmensky Před 2 lety +1

      @@TheHobbyGrotto Very true about Agrax and Nuln! Actually, I quite enjoy having both. You can take the same colour (e.g., Leadbelcher) and get two very different effects depending on the wash - even if you highlight with the base colour.
      Speaking of washes and such, I've found Black Templar contrast to be nice as well. I *never* use it on its own, but either heavily washing it down - or mixing it with either (or both) of the above two can make a really nice grime effect.
      (look, I don't have the space to start stockpiling oil washes, so I gotta improvise lol)

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před rokem

      100% on the washes, I do actually have Black Templar, I'm always looking for something that might topple my beloved Nuln Oil 😂

    • @Sturmensky
      @Sturmensky Před rokem +1

      @@TheHobbyGrotto Funnily, I originally bought it because it was recommended as "contrast Nuln Oil." Can't say it lived up to that, but if you water it down heavily, it can work quite nicely. Definitely stand by mixing watered down Templar with washes though - can get some fun effects (if you like mud, oil, and muddy oil, at least xD)

    • @TheHobbyGrotto

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před 2 lety +1

      This is definitely the Citadel version, I do use other brands of paint but I try to keep everything Citadel on the channel for consistency and because it's what I have the most brand experience with 😊
      These are all useful colours though regardless of brand. For example, XV-88 is a standard ochre colour, which is going to be handy whether it's Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter or anything else. I do plan on testing out other styles of paint in future videos though 😁

I’m from the Gold Coast but travel all over Aus to visit friends and would totally plan a trip if you did that kind of thing? I’d love to learn more about the craft and love the videos so thought I’d ask if that’s something you do. Cheers!

    • @ryancooper3629
      @ryancooper3629 Před rokem +1

      It is because GW designs their pots to do that. The lid design of GW pots intentionally causes paint build up around the rim. They want your paints to dry out so you have to buy more.
      Basically what happens is when you shake paint it accumulates on the roof of the lid, then when you open it, you will have nice easily accessible paint on the little tongue thing. You leave the lid open and draw from that tongue. While the lid is open, paint along the sides slides down and builds up around the hinge of the pot over time makes it stiffer and harder to close. Eventually the pot wont' seal properly and the paint pot dries out.
      GW is well aware of this but still has used the same design for decades. They could fix it tomorrow by just moving to a dropper bottle like every other paint maker in the world but they choose not to because they don't want you to be able to efficiently use all the paint you buy.

    • @TheHobbyGrotto
      @TheHobbyGrotto  Před rokem

      There's definitely some truth to this. You really want to be taking paint out of the pot, putting it on the wet pallette, and then closing the lid straight away to minimise the paint running down the back. Haha I don't know if you remember the old GW screwtops, but they were worse, had to bang those guys on the table to break the seal of dry paint 😂
