would guess it is an attempt to keep sand and rocks and such to not get into the tire bead and wheel rim area, never saw that before.

What's the gas mileage? More like how many gals per mile. Tires replaced? I'll bet tires replaced woud cost 50,000 dollars or more. One truck had 28 huge tires.

Largest road truck at 70 tons? Just a few months ago in Podunk South Arkansas, it took six days to move a 300 ton rotary kiln from Crossett to Gum Springs. I think you might have missed a decimal point...or Guinness World Records got their specs wrong. Most of the log trucks around here are running around 70 tons, and they're just clapped out, 25 year old Kenworths, Petes, Freightliners, and Macks.
