- Back in February, our friend Nathaniel Rateliff came by our New York offices to jam with musical director Jon Batiste. Here is one of the songs from their collaboration, a take on "All Or Nothing" from Nathaniel's 2020 solo album on Stax Records, "And It's Still Alright." #JonBatiste #NathanielRateliff #LateShowLIVE

I think this should be a regular part where John just jams with other artists.
Yes! Yes! Yes! 👏👏👏
YES!
Oh, HELL, yes!
Yes! Si! Qui! I so want to see more of this.
1000% on board for that.
I LOVE that Jon NEVER competes with his guests for attention, and even at the end of his solo he just gracefully hands the baton back. Great duet!
Well said and true
Loved the little giggle Nathaniel lets out during Jon's solo, true appreciation and joy.
He isn't trying to prove anything.
Jon Batiste is not only a musical genius--he's also a lovely human being.
@@brt1strrbb110 Yes, and that's exactly my point. A man who is confident doesn't need to prove himself.
I love when Jon interacts with other musicians. He listens intently to his guests. There's such a strong connection and mutual respect. Truly admirable!
JB's playing progressions:
1st 2 verses - learns dudes song
Next 2- plays along
Next 2 - adds accent notes
Next 2 - masters the chord progressions and improvs.
Remaining song - sprinkles JB magic dust all over.
What a classy master! Satchmo spirit lives on in U✌❤🎹
Nice play-by-play description! Nailed it!
That’s the difference between someone who plays music and someone who makes music. Both are skills that require a lot of practice, but the latter also requires a lot of talent.
@@AmbivalenceIX ... yes, talent. But add to that Jon's passion and all the hours he has danced with his piano.
I think you’re close except John clearly has the form and chord progression by the beginning of verse 2 haha!
"Let me learn your song while we play it together for the first time and by the end I will play it better than you!"
What did I just listen to? It started out a slow simmer and then came to a boil. And then got turned down to medium and the broth was quite tasty. Talk about cookin' !! Those were two incredible talents finding each other's wavelength.
That was one of the best Descriptions I have ever heard!!
Wow. What an eloquent & apt description. Thanks! 👏
That's that NOLA cooking, can't be beat.
Like a crawfish boil !!
Make “jamming with John” a regular segment of the show!!
Yes plz
Jon, yes please
What show?
Jon is both the consummate student & master simultaneously.
The key to making a delicious consommé is simmering.
And the key to greatness is never stop learning.
Shoes to wear on the great path of mystery 🔥
Jon's timing is impeccable, so damn elegant, and Nathaniels creation is just wow.
What could possibly be better than Nathaniel Rateliff? Nathaniel and John.
Well that was utterly joyful. Such beautiful playing all round.
There needs to be 1000% more content like this.
JB is one of the best things about Stephen's show
Absolutely! What a high quality musician and guy.
Won me over too
Let us give thanks to Stephen for giving him the exposure he so richly deserves.
Jon Batiste is so passionate about his music.
I had no idea this is what I needed in my life. Thank you.
Awww... I can't stop smiling
Jon is an amazing musician. Brilliant guy. I actually laugh and smile when I see him play. He’s really that good.
John is just the Best, class act.
the way Jon Batiste listens and then picks up the theme and then improvises and never takes over, unless the other musician gives him the space to do his part is so marvelous!! He is soooo good! and I love his way of talking, don’t know which dialect that is since I am not american, but it is very nice to for my dutch ears :)
@@elsedutch4972 ... Mr Jon Batiste is from New Orleans, which has its own speaking 'flavor' (ha!), and there's also the Creole 'flavor' which may be mixed in there. There are also other (mildly different) accents throughout Louisiana.
Goes to show why Jon Batiste is the most talented band leader ever on any late night show. Jon playing with other musicians should be a regular segment on the show. He really is a powerhouse and a joy to listen to. Took an amazing song by an amazing artist and just brought it to another level.
He is the best.
Gotta agree, although Paul Shaffer will always be my favorite.
While I agree he is hyper talented, the front men for the Roots can give him a run for his money.
@@cvandy2252 I had the pleasure of seeing / hearing Paul and the band at the Ed Sullivan Theater during a taping of Letterman. Every single song gave me goosebumps. Every. Single. Song. They were so darn good.
I didn't see this coming, but I dig it.
Jon and friends are balm for a soul.
Very peaceful, and masterful jam session! Sounds for the soul.
Seeing them get in that groove together made me tear up not sure why haha... This some good stuff.
When something is that great and that natural, I always tear up as well!
... it was *beautiful* !
Yes, I felt that in my heart. It was soulful.
I think because you sense their passion, you probably also do something you love and relate on that level
Nice! I've been missing John Batiste.
One can never have too much Jon Batiste!
I love to go back to this video every now and then when I have a bit of the blues. Makes me happy every time. What a delightful little piece of culture. May be my favorite youtube video ever.
same
Jon holding back "all right Jon, go ahead" Jon not holding back!
Right? Don't need to tell him twice!
A gift I never knew we needed. Thank you gentlemen and the crew who was behind the camera. We all love you. 💙
Think I’ve developed a full blown crush on Jon during quarantine.
As a straight man, I totally agree.
I wish I had something clever or eloquent to say, but all I got is that was awesome and chill af. Loved it.
I vote that was clever
Your description is sufficiently eloquent and clever!
I wish i can love someone as much as Jon loves Music 🙂
Fantastic. Would like to see more of this. Bravo Nathaniel and Jon.
Walk in the park for Jon, such a highly trained and skillfull man, so complete in his grasp of the keys. Nate held his own too though, especially with the vocals. Watched this a billion times. 10/10
Damn! J.B and Rateliff....are you kidding me right now!!!!🤯🤯🤯👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Two of my favorite musicians jamming to one of my new favorite songs?! Yes please!
See, now this is my music. Good ole newgrass/folk with some jazz piano? Give me that gypsy jazz!
"I'm glad you know those chords cause I don't know most of the names of them."
I feel you, Nathaniel.
As a somewhat crappy musician I can truly say... this was like listening to a masterpiece painting being drawn! I love it! you talented bastards! Such a beautiful melody... I needed that today!!! Thank you for the ear candy!!!
Would love to see these two put out an album together. It would be epic.
Had to watch it twice💕. That’s a keeper!
Genius in action
Wonderful jam session gents!! I love Nathaniel and to have Jon there too....is just tooooo great!!!!
Jon Batiste is brilliant. Always reminds me of the magic of creating music 🖤
Very refreshing, very maginificent, and very much appreciated,

...
I second that emotion! Very well said!
This is AMAZING!
I needed this today, thank you gentlemen.
Loved hearing that unfold, thanks guys!
We need more Jon sessions like this. His piano skills are extraordinary.
You don't know how tense you've been until you listen to JB play and your entire body relaxes into it
Just awesome. You could really feel their enjoyment of playing it and together. Feeding off each other.
Sweet medicine such music is :) Gorgeous song from this dynamic duo, perfect vibe here 🎶
Wow,...this went from a quiet storm to a fierce tsunami!!😃🤩 And best of all, these guys look like they were having a ball. I just wish that I could run out and buy the record.🎼
That song seems timeless. A voice filled with emotion accompanied by Jon's natural abilities - both growing more brilliant after each verse.
Tell Jon Batiste he should tape a whole lot more of these types of cover videos! He's bloody brilliant (they both are) and it's really moving to see them riff off each other and make something so beautiful. That's what music should be all about.
Two amazing musicians teaching each other as they play it. Bravo, Gentlemen!!!!
Beautiful. I love your work, Mr Batiste, and it's always enjoyable to hear and see your collaborations, too. Just be sure to social distance, because we love you!
Thank you sirs for a medicinal melodic musical meal.
Grace shines.
Anyone else still have chills after the 10th listen?
Omg live directing the changes on the fly and he's still adding fills, so talented. Please do more of these. "Allright John, go ahead" !!!
I love this. So much.
Jon Batiste is so wonderful. Just warms my heart to hear and see him. Thanks so much for posting this.
That giggle from Nathaniel around the 5 minute mark was priceless.
Two wonderful musicians jammin off each other always puts a big smile on my face:)
Beautiful chill sesh
Jon is a magical person 🤗
Thank you both!
God this made me smile! Great job gents!!!👌🏻😁
Pure ear candy when Jon gets to jam with guests. More, please, more!
Amazing to watch Jon learn the chord progression and then immediately know how to improvise and flow with it. ♥️
Two masters of their profession just having the same fun playing together as I have watching them.
Two obvious geniuses.
This is why America is great!!
Jon is pure class, music genius and it’s always fun to listen to his music.
I watch this most everyday. Music truly is a language and when one knows it you can communicate with anyone else who knows it no matter where they're from. I miss John wish he was still the band leader, but I'm happy he's doing bigger and better things.
This is so good!!!
Jon Batiste is a treasure! I didn't know Nathaniel Rateliff, but I do now! Wonderful!
Jon is such a joy to watch. And he’s so graciously brought a new musician into my life! Beautiful piece. Thank you. I needed this 🙏🏻
Such a great video . . . I can feel their Hearts . . . Such a great song . thanx man much love from southern California.
🎼🎹&🎸🎵👍🏻😍VERY COOL! Thanks for this Share.
I heard Nathaniel sing this on Stephen Colbert for the 1st time & I've been hooked ever since.♥️
Jon is a magician of music :) - so love watching these videos
dude... goosebumps.. the ability to feel the music and flow with the music, with such dominance of the piano. my goodness Jon is really out of this world, hands down one of the best musicians of our time
I truly love 💕 some JOHN BAPTISE!!!
‘I ended up not learning the song’ HE SAYS AFTER PLAYING IT PERFECTLY
I've watched this so many times. That's true musicianship, just awe inspiring. What lovely chemistry too. I re-fell in love with Nathaniel too. Just frickin' lovely gahh!!
Such an era of nostalgic music these days. Echoes of 1920s.
Noticing artists taking their time with the music, allowing the stories to unfold...
This is a modern classic, right in synch. Beautiful creation.
And John adds so much.
Solid Talent! Thank you Gentlemen!
A masterpiece of creation and creativity !I don’t remember .... did I comment, I can’t stop playing that song again and again!
I just found this and love these guys together, I want more.
The world is a better place because you guys made this music. Wonderful.
Jon bastiste one word amazing !
I’d be dancing in the kitchen to this one!
Jon Batiste is so incredibly good it is hard to believe!!
Love it! Just bought the version on iTunes. Hope this version will be available for purchase at some point. I love John's jazzy piano accompaniment!
There's a hole Dr. John left that this is filling for me.
Leon Redbone too🤔

@SoUtH MeMpHiS: Absolutely!!! That is what immediately came to my mind. Sooooo Great!
