Exactly. Defense is the most important aspect in any sport and its what makes watching entertaining. Cuz who wants to watch a rb run Into the end zone with nobody trying to stop him? Or who wants to watch an NBA player dunk with an open lane and nobody contesting him? Nobody. The pre-3 pt era style of play in the NBA is closer to international rules, especially 1990s to early 2000s. Luka, Jokic and Giannis all said it’s easier to score in the NBA than in Europe. This is why rating current NBA players’ stats against previous eras and just saying older players were less skilled is stupid and ahistoric.

International rules are akin to late 90s and early 2000s rules. Modern NBA rosters aren't built for those rules.
One reason why game points are so low is that the international game has only 10 min quarters. That’s 8 min less. Teams can easily score another 12-18 points in 8 min. Without even being hot from the three point line and both teams playing decent defense.

Great insights, Tim. Basketball is a Team sports. Individually, US is great, but as a team they can be defeated. In the Philippines, we have a saying "BILOG AND BOLA" the ball is round, meaning any team of the two competing teams can winning the ball game.

Scores are typically lower in the Olympics than in the NBA largely due to the fact the games are 40 minutes. But I do get your point.

Adam Silver is a big part of the problem because the NBA rules are a lot different from FIBA rules. NBA is so much more focused on money-generation and entertainment.
This USA Team will be lucky to win silver. No way in hell they win gold. Zero team chemistry, no real defenders besides Holiday and White. Way too many ball dominant players who can't play effectively off ball. Most of all, they will play like it's a NBA game. They will play soft and slow and look for fouls. Basketball has evolved globally over time, the international players now are better than the ones in the 90’s. Yes the gap is closer.
I want to mention on your last point that the international games are only 40 minutes long compared to the 48 minutes the NBA plays.
