This technique should only be used as a last resort, but it's definitely nice to know how to do. Try to fit the part better, free up your filler rod hand (use a third hand), or tack a glob on one side of the part to get them to touch better.

As a member of the fellowship of youtube welding connoisseurs, I formally wish to file a grievance. In partu, your use of Tillman welding gloves has thus been deemed unconscionable. Your welding puddle drag methodology is inherently profound and pushes the deep theological questions of agency and autonomy that we boffins of the mettalurgical arts face. Often, those which practice healthcare; doctors, nurses, preveyors of the human form are deemed "Heroes", I declare "Ney! You sir, you carry the torch of exploration, opposed in equality only by the means of names like Feynman, Einstein, Washington, Le Petomane! My welding helmet is off to you young sir....off to you.

Hot damn that connotation level of English used! Grats sir, for I have loved it. In today’s world of “COMMON PROSE FOR MAH HOES!” We always can benefit and enjoy a little schmancy fancy :)
I'm your backup MD. I was practicing yesterday and welded the tungsten to the steel. Literally had to break it loose. That was the third time for the evening so I reground the tungsten and shut everything off and decided to call it a day before something went flying. I'm usually not that bad but no one said learning TIG was easy. Think I added too much filler and it rose up to my tungsten, not sure though. I guess I was holding a bit too tight of an arc :)
Loving the comedy lately. I certainly don't call myself a welder (yet?) but as someone whos worked with his hands his whole life I can spot a practiced craftsman and at this point it seems rare enough that I'd rather give someone i've seen work the benefit of the doubt or ask some questions rather than start a pissing match on the internet about who knows more on what. I don't mind watching people troll their haters as long as its funny AND there's real info right next to it. Keep it up!
I was in a livestream earlier, I loved how the uploader paused for just 1 second and said, "hold on a second guys, I gotta block somebody real quick, I'm not gonna tolerate their sh*t....OK. now, where were we!" LOL staying calm and collected the entire time. Anyone with real skill or quality content, is typically professional enough to NOT TALK SH*T. EVER. TO ANYONE. Their works speaks FOR them.
I did this a couple times while holding parts during fitup, stumbled upon it by accident. I don't re-grind thungsten, usually have scraps pieces on table that I just strike an arc on to clean up the tip. I do grind thungsten before I weld the parts.
Learned a load from you 6061...... I'm not a qualified fabricator but my line of business in marine has led me to be a jack of all trades and I'm learning that there's not a lot of textbook stuff thatll work in the field and with repairs etc. This is the kind of stuff that gets the job done and done well. Thanks!!.
I'm not a welder, but I've found you can measure how well something is working by how many come back to be repaired. If it's welded strong enough that almost none come back (say 1 out of 500, or better), it's good enough for what it is.
Loved the portrayal of the keyboard warrior - you knew your stir would create a stir! I usually can do this while stick welding or tig welding by moving fast across the area...the momentum can sometimes drag the puddle. Now that I cleaned the points in my welder (975 Lb. Idealarc 300 tig / stick machine) I need to get some practice on aluminum.
Man watching this is validating, I used to do this way too often for bad fitups and I’d feel the most shame that I couldn’t get it to stick normally. Still works in a pinch but I hate grinding tungsten. And it’s not like I got much better I still suck at welding.

Only thing I have ever TIG-welded, was pipe holders and guy-wire tighteners from stainless steel, and the parts were run together without filler rod. The guy-wire parts were even welded using a semi-automatic pneumatic jig. Anyone who says theyre a welder of 30 years blah blah and then says "you should never do that" has probably spent their entire career in a rigid work environment like a factory or doing the same job over and over without enough variety to cause them to need to break the mold and get creative. Im always finding myself needing to break "the rules" and it simply enables me to do things i couldn't otherwise pull of. As long as its within sensible margins and we remember the basics of weld integrity then to the naysayers i say: 🖕
Dear, you always weld new aluminum, I would like to see you weld a gearbox where the aluminum is contaminated with oil and show you the cleaning process.
I cant even get them to bridge together without adding filler and thats with perfect fit. The puddle on both sides just seem to pull back from the centre like moses parting the red sea. But im not using any backing or heat soak.
