Thank you for this video Bev and John. Would you make a vieo about travel safety and are consered about revieling your where abouts on real time via instegrahm and your future plans on you tube.
Thanks for an awesome tips. My husband is 64 and he has to join the medicare when he is 64 & 9 months. We plan to start full-time travel next year. Have you think about Medicare and how you plan to have them while full-time travel abroad. Medicare won’t cover you if live out of the US for 60 days. Hope you can make a video related to Medicare. ❤Thanks
I love following your videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them! You two are fun to watch. ☺️
My husband and I chose to drive our cars until they had about 250,000 miles on them. We lived in the same house for most of our marriage, rather than upgrading, even though we could afford it. We had nice things but didn't continually upgrade to the newest phone, the newest tv or car, etc. We lived like this so we could travel around the world during our working years, while we were young and healthy. Our kids joined us until they were adults.
Then one day my husband was suddenly diagnosed with cancer and died in his early 60's. We were both so thankful that we'd lived a very balanced life throughout our marriage, rather than waiting for our retirement years to start; especially since he died several years before he was to retire.
Enjoy every minute of your time together. I miss my hubby very much. ❤️
Oh, our hearts go out to you! We're so glad you two had the foresight to travel while you were raising your family. Your story sounds just like our moms. Bev's dad died when she was 13 and John's when he was 29. We know our moms had a tough time and we miss our dads so much. What we wouldn't give to go back and do it all again! The good news, we had the best dads, and we think they probably would have gotten such a kick out of our travels. Thank you for sharing your story and a reminder to us all to love hard and live life to the fullest! Much love! ❤️ John & Bev
Thank you for sharing your story. It is indeed important to remember to live, while we can.
I am pleased to hear how much you and your husbond realised together.
Take care.
Greetings from Camilla in Denmark ☀️
@@camillaholst7321 Thank you so much. We were very blessed.
Sounds like you had a great life together. I’m so sorry it was cut short. I hope you’re still living YOUR life to the fullest!
So enjoyed watching this❤My husband and I retired about a year and half ago and we had plans to travel to Asia for 6 months in April this year. Sadly he passed in January. I am still grieving over his loss but I will
continue our dreams eventually.
So sorry to hear about your husband. That really breaks our heart. We think he would want you to get out there and still see Asia.
Many blessings to you,
John and Bev

Hi!
I’m a 24 year old student and have just started a part-time job to be able to finance my travels. I’ve watched many of your videos in the last few days and I’m very grateful for the tips, tricks and your experience reports. Thank you! I wish you all the best on your travels in 2024.
Wonderful. Thanks for watching and best of luck to you in your job and travels.
Happy journeys in 2024,

As as a trail backpacker, I’ve used the some concept of a long distance backpacker in my travels. After traveling for decades, I use what I call “Rules of 3”…I pack no more than 3 on each category (example: Footwear…Shoes, sneakers and shower shoes. 3 quick dry underwear. 3 socks…1 long socker athletic socks for compression, 1 mid length and 1 no shoe socks). I carry a backpacker sawyer mini water purifier. This is a lifesaver, especially when I arrive to a town too late and all stores are closed to buy bottled water. I used to carry 5 iodine tablets, but they have expiration dates.
Love your rules. We are pretty sure we could get down to less clothes, but our white "Retirement Travelers" shirts tend to get discolored and we like nice ones to film with.
Happy journeys and thanks for following along,
John and Bev
retirementtravelers.com/
Nice!
@@RetirementTravelers ever thought about going for a different color, that will not be prone to discoloration?
16:55 I have a drybag and use it as clothes washing machine at my destination in the tub or shower space. Less messy than washing in the sink. It can also serve as an extra-large ice bucket.
That's what I do when camping -- have even used it to soak my feet after a long hike!
Can I buy a dry bag on amazon?
When I was a Flight Attendant a man demanded that I store his bag in the overhead… I was pregnant and stuck out my tummy and the other men sitting around him shamed him. My career was cut short hurting my back storing a heavy bag in the overhead. Great tips as usual and I thank you for being so generous to share them with us. Cheers! 👍
Thanks for sharing your story. Sorry to hear about your injury. Thanks for following along with us.
Happy journeys,
John and Bev

41 year Flight Attendant here and the way I made it this far by looking at the people saying put this in the OH Bin, and I say NO. Period.
It is my understanding that flight attendants’ job is our safety and stowing a passenger’s baggage does not fall under safety requirements. There are plenty of able bodied people to help those that can not help themselves. I have NEVER felt it a flight attendant’s duty to stow my luggage. If that is required, maybe this man should have paid the fee to check his baggage.
The reason why Australia and other countries have 7-10kg weight limits for carry on -as annoying as it is - is actually to protect flight attendants from back injuries. It’s something that unions enforced for work health and safety.
Another great video thank you, we always place a hand towel or some smaller clothing (sock etc) over all the lights that seem so bright in some hotel rooms 👍
Nice! I recently completed superbowl on the new Icon Of The Seas. It’s my 60th cruise. I’m preparing to visit Schengen countries to add to my short list of countries I visited so far. I completed my U.S. military career relatively young age and I’ve been traveling. Recently sold my last rental property near The Master's in Augusta GA, and I'll resume traveling full-time again. I’m inspired by y’all, and hope to run into y’all one day. I also enjoy walking and wondering around countries that I visit. I bring my U.S. Army mess dress and wear them on cruises during formal nights to honor veterans and measurement tool for me. If button starts to bust, it’s time to stop going the buffet haha. I have lower back issues and it helps lower the pain when I maintain a good weight. Again, thank you!
So cool to see Superbowl on the Icon. Enjoy your travels and perhaps our paths will meet someday.

Love your videos. We realized that we needed a different approach than big roller bags when we are moving through multiple locations on a trip. We did 6 countries in 4 weeks, and many places only had multiple staircases between locations(Train stations, subways, airports, and our favorite a water taxi strike on the day we arrived in Venice😂). What a learning curve it was, and apologizing to anyone who dared to help with our bags. Traveling through multiple seasons was our hardest, and this was our second time going from winter to tropical and back again. It was hard to reduce packing, but we came home and vowed to do better. I spent good amounts of money on wicking pants for me, as well as shorts. We have to still get new sneakers before our next trip, but we will do smaller backpacks and a carry on. We are excited to get back on the road again, but with a more restricted income we spend our summers at home in the glorious great lake state, gardening, boating, and enjoying our beautiful weather. We won't give up the security of our small home that we made possible to age in place. We will travel as often as affordable and we love every trip we take. Keep inspiring us on new locations.
Thanks so much for following along with us. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Do try out some Hokas. They are expensive, but so comfortable!

@@RetirementTravelersYou are doing a great job at the goal. I was a little surprised that you don't use any of the vacuum pack / squeeze the air out compression stuff, but I guess with the pack optimized mass to the space, getting rid of the small amount of residual air would not be of any great benefit?
Thank you for your informative yet entertaining videos

Excellent advice in this video! Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ll share something from mine: the easiest way to carry electrical tape to cover those annoying LED lights in hotel rooms is to cut about 10 strips, each about 1.5 inches. Fold over one end about 1/4 inch to serve as a grab tab, then mount all of the strips onto a plastic card, like an old credit or membership card. Don’t put the strips on top of each other, as electrical tape sticks most strongly to itself. The card is easily carried in a tech or toiletry bag, and the strips are reusable. Just stick them back on the card and take it to the next destination.
Thanks for sharing. Great tip.

As someone who has been actively reducing our luggage over the past number of years and who refuses to do checked bags, y’all are SPOT ON with your advice! Great video! Each trip we make, we refine our packing more and more. We don’t travel full time, but we do travel a LOT. We are also older so reducing what we have to deal with and the weight is very important. Thank you!!
Thanks so much and glad you found our video helpful. Great job on packing light.

You guy are THE BEST! We’ve had a family member illness that has brought us back to CA longer than expected (writing this from the surgery waiting room). We are SO anxious to get traveling again. We are also long term retired travelers but with rolling carry ons, and haven’t yet evolved to backpacks. We’ve been traveling over 40 years. Light and fast is our mantra. Tips: I wear a tsa friendly men’s nylon security belt that has space for document copies, some meds, and safety tools. We love our 100% cotton sarongs for a towel, a wrap, a cover and more. Never leave home without them. Let someone else cay your extra weight. Ex. In lieu of heavy camera equipment I befriend someone who has a telephoto etc. and ask them to share photos. They always do. You’ll want to try this for animal pics in Africa. A Nikon with a 500mm lens (heavy) takes amazing animal photos in the right hands…someone else’s! Happy travels!
Thanks for sharing. Love the camera tip, especially for Africa.

I took the Nikon when we went to Africa. I certainly took some wonderful pictures. Since we were riding most of that tome it didn’t seem too heavy. I am an elderly female.

Hi J&B, we do a number of o/s trips and cruises every year, we've been doing the "Backpack only" thing for all travel since our 6 months throughout South America trip in 2008 where traveling light was essential, (lots of hiking). It's just so liberating, we still see folk constantly struggling with such heavy luggage you wonder how they ever cope. Domestic airlines here in Australia only allow 7kg carry on unless you pay extra or book Business, so it's become a "norm" to pack light, (yes even for cruises). Just like a lot of things in life you don't need all the "stuff". Thankyou for your informative videos and happy travel.
Packing light is definitely the way to go. Thanks for the tip on domestic airlines in Australia.

More great re-enforcing ideas. If you were a solo, a few years older than yourselves, not doing a youtube channel (so only iPhone, kindle, and iPad) that you could travel in a 30 liter pack? The older I get, the less I want to carry. Thanks and will be in Africa in April.

Great information. I've always traveled frequently and have started traveling much more since I retired at 53. My prior company was Tender Corporation which actually made Ben's Tick and Insect Repellent so I appreciate the choice you made in your repellents. They have wipes also and we tend to carry the wipes everywhere we travel, but will be carrying bottles when we go to Africa (and possibly India). Adventure Medical Kits make a card inside their World Travel series and that card can be used to talk to a medical professional who doesn't speak your language. I carry the card, but not the larger kit (although I'm not sure you can purchase the card on its own).
Thanks so much. Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for sharing the info on the wipes and Adventure Medical Kits.

I wear a Paula’s Choice tinted SPF - two for the weight of one! 😂 Seriously, I like the tinted ones since they’re often not so greasy and don’t sting my eyes if I sweat, guessing because they’re developed for the face.
@leapintothewild I love the Paula's choice Resist Super-Light Daily Wrinkle Defense SPF 30.
Huge 👍 on Ben’s !! I’ve never had a tick and I hike/camp a ton here in the southeast US where ticks will freaking latch onto a fence post! 😂 I use their DEET, so I apply at the last possible minute and wash off as soon as I’m back inside, but it’s still better than a disease-carrying tick. This is a great round-up! Thanks for all the tips! (PS Bev - the reason people ask about makeup is because you have such pretty skin that they think you’re wearing foundation and blush 😉)
Thanks for sharing your experience on Ben's.

PS. This is John and I do think Bev has pretty skin. 🥰
I just bought my first pair of Hoka shoes in SC. I want to give a shout out to REI. The employee spent a whole hour measuring my feet and getting me the best pair of shoes. They even have a steep rock you can climb on to see how they feel coming downhill on uneven surfaces.
I then went next door to New Balance and stood on their computerized foot measurement pad. They fit me with the best insoles to go in the Hokas. Thanks for the recommendation! Europe here I come!!

Hi John and Bev. I love watching your videos and hope to embark on some extended traveling adventures in few years time. You are very inspiring. A quick tip about South Africa and neighboring countries- they use a three pin round plug, and the adapter is not in the standard set. You’ve probably worked this out already! Totally efficient packing..but the whole travel plan is tight with minimal chaos. I can do a lighter carryon because of my bad back which is workable for a weekend. Gotta go smaller roller if longer. Is what it is. You do the best you can. Safe travels!
Thanks for sharing! Do what you have to do to get out there and travel.

Such fantastic information. I want to point out how useful your tips are even if you aren't travelling around the world. Minimalist travel is the way to go. I agree with you about ditching rolling luggage and my wife agrees with purchasing quality, sometimes expensive products. Together we may eventually come to the correct side. 😁
Thanks for sharing! So glad you are enjoying our channel and website.

Thanks for the video and packing tips as we have started to do more international travel. What shoes do you wear when it is raining? I'm trying to reduce our packing list and find the right combination of travel shoes.
Thank you…very informative video….I hope you enjoy your visit to Kerala. “ Incredible India “…I really enjoyed my visit there..
You are welcome. We loved our time in Kerala. Glad you had a great visit.

Thank you for another fabulous video. All of your recommendations are spot on! I have one question…. What do you do with the items you decide to “ditch”… ie… suitcases, etc.? I can’t wait for the next Travel School video
We have sent some to charity, given to our children, or literally "ditched" them like we did our suitcase and some other items in Italy.

After watching this video and doing some more research we purchased a Fairview and Fairpoint backpack. They really seem to be the best option. We look forward to your videos,. Thank you
Great. We love our packs. Thanks for following along with us and glad you are enjoying our channel.

Thanks for sharing! Great ideas. Your dry bag can double as a small “washing machine”. I add a litter of water, tiny TINY bit of detergent, and a few garments then shake and let soak 5min, shake again, dump and rinse a few times then DONE!!
Thanks for sharing!! What a great idea.

I’m really addicted to your channel. Thank you for all your videos.
This isn’t a packing question but I’m wonder if you ever worry about safety? How do you protect yourselves? Thank you.
So glad you are enjoying our channel and website. We worried more several years ago, but as we have traveled more and more, our worries are less and less. We don't go to bad areas in cities, rarely go out at night, don't wear expensive jewelry, etc.

Hi, very helpful video. Those red lights are so bothersome in hotels. I bring a pad of black post it notes. They cover the light and are easy to remove.
Thanks for the great suggestion.

13:51 I believe it was Ecuador had a posted rule in the airport “NO tools”. They took my plastic “spork” because it was in the original packaging “eating tool”.
Who knew sporks and and tiny allen wrenches were so dangerous. 🤣

Great advice! Thank you! I'm 70, and I ditched my rolling carry-on for an Osprey pack after hearing Rick Steves speak. I love the freedom it gives me. Sadly, I think many who bemoan packs have never had a good one, and they have convinced themselves to be unhappy with all packs. What's that expression? ... Haters gonna hate.
That's awesome! Great job. We love our packs.

I’m going the opposite direction. I am a 72yo male and used my Waypoint 80 (2014 model-That includes the day bag which I think is 15 that I carried detached) for six weeks traveling Europe in Autumn 23 doing rail travel. I have lower back problems and this was problematic. I’m headed back to Europe next week and taking my Level8 26” bag. I’m doing rail travel again and hoping for the best. As suggested, I’m still going to try to pack light! Fingers crossed! 💕

What did you do with your warmer clothes when you left Scandinavia for Africa?
We made a stop for the holidays in the US, and we left our winter items at our daughter's house. John & Bev
I’ve been watching your videos for the past year and love all the information you give. We’re about 2 years away before retiring and plan to travel the world and pack as minimal as possible. We will plan to record some of our adventures for family back home so we don’t need a lot of equipment. Just the phone and a microphone setup. I notice the microphones you use are very tiny. Can you tell me what they are?
Thanks so much. Good luck with your planning. Everything we pack is on our packing list, which is on our website. Here is the link.

Great tips for packing and making sure you are taking what you absolutely need. I have seen too many people with carry on roller suitcases that can't fit in the overhead because the sides are bulging from too much stuff. Have you considered ditching 1 of your laptops and get an iPad Pro instead, since you can use a wireless keyboard with it? Understood you still need a laptop for the type of photo and video editing you do. It is also important for people to make sure to not under pack. If you are going on a big hiking adventure, you need to take the appropriate layers of clothing to be prepared and safe for the unknowns. Safe travels! --M
Thanks for following along with us. We used to carry one iPad and a computer, but there were too many limitations with the iPad that caused us issues. Trying to do both a website and CZcams channel is a big commitment in technology.

Great video, full of good suggestions. We are trying to get the Osprey packs here in Australia but all stockists are out of stock, guess they must be good. With your prescription meds do you cut the label from the box and keep it with the tablet foils, we have done this in the past?
Thanks again for the informative series, we start travelling soon👍
Sorry to hear that. Osprey packs are the best. Yes, we keep documentation on our meds, just not all the packaging.

Awesome video! Do you have links for all the clothes?
We don't have links for the clothes. Everything we currently have links for is on our Travel Store on our website. Some of them aren't sold on Amazon. Thanks for following along and we plan to keep expanding our store.
