Whenever I think of technology becoming obsolete, I just think of these two things. One, people have no issues paying $1000 plus for a phone that they know full well will be replaced in 2-3 years and never used again and two, even if something better comes out in 5 years, the Tonemaster still sounds incredible so who cares? Look at the gear still being used from 30-40 years ago. There will always be something “better”.

I think it's less about improving on the sound vs adding features. For example, add in a headphone output and effects loop. Keep the look on the front though as well as the sound.

I finally want to rant away on these Tonemasters. I got my TMDR when they first came out, and I freaking love it to this day. Especially the power attenuator. For family life at home, its such a great feature to have. That, the light weight, and the tones I got out of it at the music store was all it took to lure me in. A few things that I've thought after hearing all sides of the tube vs digital argument:
Tubes amps I've owned and still own are: A legit vintage 65 Fender Tremolux, a mid 70's silverface Twin (that I got for $50!!), a Princeton Reverb reissue (my all time fav), Marshall JCM 800 half stack, Mesa Boogie Nomad 45, a cool and weird 70's SG Systems tube amp that looks like its from Star Trek, a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, a Fender Blues Jr III and a Peavy Classic 30.
The only tube amp that I haven't had to have work done on yet is the Princeton reissue but its still pretty new. I've put God knows how much money in all of those tube amps, and the Mesa literally cracked a tube socket on the 2nd gig I played with it. Between tubes and caps, all my tube amps have cost money to keep running. And they are heavy as fk.
Solid State amps I own are: Peavy Bandit 112 from the 80s, Line 6 Flextone original version from the late 90's, and now the Fender Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb.
The only amps besides the Princeton RI that I have never had to work on are the Bandit, the Line 6 Flextone and the Tonemaster so far. The Flextone was the first digital modeling combo pretty much ever. My keyboard player gigged with it 3-5 night per week with his Rhodes piano for 8 years straight, and it was also used as an "everybody can use" stage amp for an open mic that I hosted for 12 years. It was never babied yet it still works to this day, and so does the footswitch. Never an issue with this digital pos that should be in the scrap heap by now.], right? Pffft. Whatever.
What about tone? I dont know, but give Jack Pearson a listen when he's playing his $200 Squire guitar on stage and tell me how bad it sucks. The best guitar player I ever heard in my area used to play a Strat through a Peavy Bandit with a few pedals and his tone was incredible. But so was his touch and technique. The dude could flat out play. He had his sound and found it with a cheapo solid state amp. I guess my point is, yes the gear does matter, but not quite as much as the player using it. You are you. No matter what gear you have at your disposal, if you spend the time practicing your technique and touch, and spend time tweaking your gear, you will indeed find your sound, and your sound is your own. The audience doesnt care. We dont make our money playing for gear snobs, we make our money playing for folks who love to listen to music and dance. The gear is just a tool. Most everything that makes us really sound good comes from within. Just my $.02.....

Exactly... Internet has deviated many people to play less and waste thousands of hours watching gear, analyzing everything, saying this is crap, this is fabulous, the latter often being crazy expensive gear they've just purchased and trying to justify it.
Don't get me wrong, internet is great, but... try honestly yourself, shouldn't I be better playing? Instead of giving food to my GAS syndrome?
      I have noticed a few facts :
I have seen numerous awesome musicians with less than expensive gear.. Or pros that have been playing the same guitar for the last twenty years, and just don' t think about changing if it works
And.. let's face it very few pro players spend the time some spend on gear forums...
So if you have a Tonemaster and happy with it, stop thinking when it will break down, and in a way going back to GASland to buy another "better" piece of gear
And all this doesn't only apply for musical instruments.. Internet has created GAS syndrome for everthing and everyone.. Just crazy if you think about it

You can use your headphones with the Tonemaster by using an XLR to 1/8” female adapter. Set your tone on the front and use the output level on the back for your overall level. I got the tone master when it came out and here's my takeaway:
Ive gigged with it several times and while I love the weight, attenuation, and DI, I wasn't a huge fan of its natural overdrive. Compared to even a RI, it lacks the warmth, punchiness, and articulation. Maybe it's just my ears. But if that matters to you that's a huge deal. You could just supplement that by using an OD pedal which I do most times but the breakup is still not the same. Also I don't feel like the spring reverb is very natural. Most spring reverbs ive used are inconsistent and have this spongy sound, which is why I love them. Theyre usually very responsive to your playing and can sound strange and wonky sometimes, and I love that. The tone master however is very consistent and digital. Sounds too much like short delay, if that makes sense. And lastly it's not enough wattage for me. I know that's not the deluxes fault but when I asked ppl about this amp they said it'd be enough for a loud band. Well maybe my bands have been louder cuz it's not enough. I usually use a clean tone and add dirt from my pedals but anything past 3.5-4, you're adding some hair. At home it's great and more than enough but with a loud band you may be struggling. Good thing it has the DI! Maybe I need a twin instead. But it won't be another tone master until the overdrive and reverb are somewhat improved .

    • @KRUSTYskates
      @KRUSTYskates Před 3 měsíci

and yes I did the initial firmware update for the bright cap and reverb as soon as I got it. It made pedals easier to take especially ODs and gave the reverb knob more range.

I bought a simple XLR to 1/8 headphone and with Apple wired earbuds it's been the perfect late night practice amp (other model headphones will vary). I don't use a headphone amp or any kind of interface, literally just direct out, and select a cab sim and you use the line balance control as a master volume for gain. It's actually amazing and it takes all of my pedals and even fuzz impressively through headphones and does it well. This alone made the value of the amp even greater for what I was looking for. Also it's likely been said but update to the latest firmware to remove the virtual bright cap, and the reverb has a better taper.

I think the stigma ppl have against these comes from solid state amps which were supposed to replace tubes and failed in the 70’s. But w 80-90 year old tech sooner or later smthg was always going to come along which could perform as good. As time goes on digital will also only improve while it will be more expensive to repair and replace tube amps. Tube manufacturers are slowly declining and theres scarcity bc of that which is driving up the costs of owning a tube amp. Itll be like photography, ppl prefer film for the warmth, but film cannot offer as much detail that digital can. I still want a tube amp but id rather have a small 5-10 watt tube amp and smthg like a tone master for different purposes. That either means, not many in my area have been sold new, so therefore not many used available to sell, OR people who have bought them, love them and are not selling them, and if they do, because of such a low amount available use, they are doing well in retaining their value, hence why such a low spread between new and use pricing before taxes.

I have done the dance between traditional (tube) and Innovation (digital) ever since I bought the first line6 Flextone, however many years ago that was. W+V+T, weight, volume and tone that is the eternal equation. Where am I now? The Flextone is long gone . What I own now: a Marshall JVM, a real swiss arm knife. A Fender Supersonic 22, has a Deluxe in there somewhere. A 1972 Fender Twin reverb, an extraordinary amp. But the amp that I always seem to go back to is my Yamaha THR10, the first edition. For my uses which don't include stage, it gets three ticks for WVT. It seems the Tonemaster may also fall into this bracket. I reckon you'd be surprised how well a THR10 would fit into your studio. Oh and it has a headphone out.

The digital amps are like talking to someone who isn’t listening, and the 2 year warranty and their history with the Mustang is telling me that this is a disposable amp after 2-5 years. But it does have cool features and it light, but we only get this one life to play. I’m sticking with heavy, needs maintenance, connects with my playing. Bro, what was anyone wrong about? It's $1000 for this amplifier brand new. A mass-produced, Chinese-made digital copy of a classic amp. And, the amp it's copying can be had *the real deal...with tubes* for hundreds less on the used market.
No one go this wrong...at least not those who are really looking at the cost of manufacture and the profit margin. Fender is a huge brand and is demanding a massive premium on that alone. I don't care how good it may sound. Many have said it sounds pretty damn close to the real deal--great...I would even agree to some extent. But, I've not heard a single person say that think this digital amp is better in tone than the real amp it attempts to model. Given that it's at best, it's still second place to the real deal...how can you justify spending anything more than $350 on this new?
Bugera makes 150W plexi clones for 600$ all tube. Say what you want about their company...they copy everything shamelessly...whatever...at least they price things accordingly. Boss sells digital modeling amps for far less than this. You know what the difference is? They didn't slap a Fender Twin Reverb logo on it--that apparently accounts for 75% of the cost.
