I finally got some craft supplies I've been eyeing for some time. I used my new craft supplies haul from Michael's to make minis and repaint some cheap minis. I show how to use Rub 'n Buff on a smooth surface (glass), and compare DecoArt Ultra Matte with Matte ModPodge. I also used Amazing Mold Putty to create a mold, and more! Lots to see and enjoy.

Yay! A fellow non-waster. I have to say it borders on obsession with me. I cut open all old "empty" glue bottles to get out what is left on the sides before tossing them. I sometimes find myself sayin, "Oh, I better not use/waste that something in case I need it later." Then I realize, "THIS IS LATER, YOU CRAZY PERSON!" I thought I was the only one. Gretchen has her over-gluer therapy. We need the, Non-Wasters Anonymous.
Oh absolutely! It extends into the rest of my life too. An office chair I got on the side of the road broke, so I removed the plastic and fabric pieces to throw away but brought all the metal components to the dump to be recycled. They have a big scrap metal pit.
I think I found my true kindred spirits. I use everything. Yes price tag hanger collector here!❤
I do that with lotion.
If you ever do run out of that shrink plastic, clear plastic food containers with the recycle #6 code can also be used.
Good to know! Where I live, we can only recycle #1, #2, and #5 plastic. I tend to save the other numbers for making miniatures.
You might want to wipe the threads of your jar of tripple thick with some petroleum jelly. It tends to want to glue shut forever. Love your videos!

Love the lantern. I used to use shrinky sinks with my daughter when she was very young, it's so much fun. 40 years later and I still love playing around with it. I always put it in a small toaster oven and watched curl and shrink and flatten. So cool. Thanks for all the info.

I believe Rub 'n Buff is a gilding wax, so yes, you can get a shinier finish by polishing it with a cloth after it's completely dried. I tend to use old socks, but any rag would do.

I know! It was such crap, I didn't even plan to ever use it as a lantern. I planned to cut it up at some part and use the parts to make new minis. It turned out so much better than I imagined.

You crack me up. I love your self deprecating manner. I do the same obsessive things, like making sure I get the most out of my purchases by rubbing off anything on the foil tops into the container, and it would be just like me to start off with too little of something and have to add to it in order to try to conserve and save, literally, pennies!
It's an illness 😆 I take my "not wasting things" too far. Like my neighbor threw away a whole box of dishes and home decor in his trash. I fished the whole box out of the trash, washed everything in my dishwasher, then donated most of it to Goodwill. I kept two things for myself. I couldn't cope with letting that stuff get thrown away.

Shrink dinks are amazing. They're so useful for making tiny signs cos you can write it nice and big and not have to do fine detail work on something so small, it's like magic.

That's such a great idea. I'm definitely gifting some. It seems like so much fun. I had no idea it's been around for decades.
One tip I can give you that will help you with sizing the shrinky dinks is to copy a life-size ruler on the plastic and shrink it. You'll be able to tell how much it will shrink much easier.

Great video. I painted a terrible green plastic "electric" mixer to look like an old Mix Master. It looks good, better than the original anyway. I find great ideas on your videos. I love how you charge in without reading directions! Ha!

The oval frame and picture turned turned out beautiful. I have used the DecoArt Triple Thick Glaze in other projects and I really like the affect. I thought the lantern was an awesome upgrade. I have a few pieces of cheap plastic mini toys that I can see upgrading. Thanks for the tip of priming the glass bottle with the ultra matt finish before using the Rub and Buff. I had a shrink plastic jewelry kit as a kid and had oodles of fun with it. I put mine in the oven on parchment paper and it would always warp and curl before flattening out on its own. That's how I knew it was done. There was even a technique of cutting ovals or circles out of the plastic and taking it out before it was all the way done shrinking. The shape would warp itself into a cool little bubble shape.
That's so much fun! I had never seen these before until I was an adult.
😇These little projects brought back some memories from a lo-o-o-o-ng time back for me. 🥰I love how the little lantern turned out once you were done with it. But since Mod Podge gave the same look on the plastic, I'll stick with that and use gold leaf (or other "leafs") to finish items. 😀 Thanks for showing the Rub n Buff... I didn't know what it was. 🤩
I still have shrink plastic from the late 1970s... packed in a craft box somewhere in storage for now. So yeah... you probably have enough to last for the rest of your life.🤣 If you have a toaster oven, just put your painted plastic in there and it will do its curling and uncurling and shrinking without you having to hold it or do anything.

Thanks for all the information. When I was young my mama would buy Shrinky Dinks for me and my brother and sisters. We loved them! We always put them in the oven. They do curl back on themselves but they flatten out.
That sounds like so much fun. I really wish I had played with that stuff when I was a kid.
My dollar tree sells a mat that is used as an iron rest. It’s thin and stand very hot temperature. I use that as a mat over my shrink plastic when I put it in the toaster oven. Parchment paper kinda works also. With the parchment paper I just fold a small piece in half. I tried so many different ways not to use my heat gun because it would blow the plastic everywhere.
I think I need to get myself a dedicated craft room toaster oven for baking clay and now for baking shrink plastic

As a frugal person I love to see others are frugal too! I also like to try alternative methods, using silicone caulk (made in soapy water, tutorials on CZcams) to create moulds instead of the more expensive material you used. Worth a try!
If you don’t want to hold the krimpy dinky with tweezers, put yours between a piece of aluminum foil you fold over, works like a charm👍

I've baked clay in folded aluminum with my heat gun. Smart
I never buy rub b buff lol. I make it with hair wax, a bit of glue and mica powder. Much cheaper and works just as well. The glue ensures it does not rub off after drying. Also, you can mix glue and alcohol to make a quick glaze in a pinch. Polymer glue works best, but even PVA works. About a tablespoon of alcohol to a 1/4 cup of glue. I am a frugal gal myself 🤣 These are beautiful 💞

Fantastic! Congratulations on 50K! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 I actually liked the effect you demonstrated with the rub and buff on the unsealed glass. Maybe for your HP room you can create something that looks like it’s made of mercury glass by using the rub and buff and wiping some away then sealing. I imagine this would also work to age a tiny mirror.
That's a cool idea! I have round, clear glass balls. They're hollow inside. I could make one look like a crystal ball, for Divination 🔮

Fyi there are certain types of plastic packaging that will work like shinky dinks. It is the one with the recycle number 6 on it, although not all plastics show the number. Love all your videos❤

This was awesome. 🥰❤️ I just purchased the antique gold rub and buff, it was all my store had, and I loved learning the new tricks. I'm glad you shared your experiements. The lantern was an amazing little transformation 😍 and the shrink pllastic, I need some of that! I've tried shrinking empty bags of chips in the oven, and they really shrink down to mini size. It was crazy! I think I learned that from pinterest, might have been yt. It was so many years ago when I first started making minis. But try it, if you remember. Its really interesting that they shrink down that small.

I will email you, also I am creating a retro lamp from the 70s and I dont have the ultra matte but i do have dura clear matte varnish, I have to paint some plastic buttons im gonna try the matte varnish that I have and possibly use my rub and buff, I may end up using my metallic antique gold paint by folk art, haven't decided for sure yet. I Def don't want to use the matte mod podge, I just don't trust it. Thanks for the tips. 🥰❤️
I work at Michaels and the product during the winter can come in super cold and possibly frozen if in the truck overnight (our shift for truck days starts at 2am if it doesn't come to be unloaded the day before) so that model magic looks pretty similar to what I've seen and stocked on our peghooks. The best way to test if it's still good, though, is to try it anyway..

Great projects! Experimentation is the best way to learn and sharing helps us all. Just as a thought: classic, professionally gold-leafed (aka expensive) frames and other surfaces have an undercoat of a brick red color to support the warmth of the gold.
Thank you! I've only had one other viewer suggest read as a base coat. I tried it on a miniature frame I painted and it definitely looks warm. It's a great technique
U can also use no. 6 plastics (usually used in packagings) as shrinky dinks! Absolutely love ur works.

I haven't used "rub & buff" but that looks pretty cool though. I love the triple thick glaze I can do all kinds of glass things with it. It also works on some of the wooden furniture that needs a high shine without all the work. Never tried the mold making. One day though Thanks for sharing and you have a great day

Admittedly, I haven't even googled how to use shrink plastic, and I didn't read the instructions... However, I did watch other people do it so that's good enough for me lol. I wonder how else people shrink their plastic. Maybe that's why mine didn't shrink all the way.

Hi, I had some Shrink Art sheets (same product, different brand) and after they sat around for a long time (years) they didn't shrink as much. We always did them in the oven but I think heat guns just weren't as available back then. And yes, they always curl up first, then when they lie flat, you know they're done. That stained glass window is gorgeous! @@queencityminis

Nope! I had them shipped to my house. Many of these items were out of stock at my local Michael's. I didn't realize they had been delivered. They were discovered frozen solid the next morning 😬
I use shrink plastic all the time. I also use the type that you can print on with your inkjet printer. I was hoping you weren't giving up because if you keep applying heat it will always straighten itself out and lie flat. But I never thought of using it to make stained glass windows! Genius! But, yeah, I think it's pretty common for the finished sizes to not be exactly 1/3 of the original. I would make the shrink plastic stained glass first and then cut the opening for the window. I bought some really cheap foam clay from Dollar General just to play around with. I think yours may have been affected by the freeze because it sort of looks dry in the package. What I have is kind of like a non sticky marshmallow, sort of. Thanks for the video.
Personally, I have tried that foamy, air-dry polymer clay. I found it to be annoying because it deforms too easily.

Haha! Sounds like something I would do!! It really is kind of fun to watch them through the oven window - they curl up like yours did and you start to panic and then at the last moment they flatten out. Kind of a genius patent!!
Some great tips! I want to make some cakes look more realistic. I will try the matte glaze. I will look forward to seeing what you do with the other cakes in the future. I always cut my lotion tubes in 1/2 when I am almost done. That way, I get a lot more product out of it. Plus, the other 1/2 of the tube slides over the other part and keeps the lotion from drying out. 😊

How fun! I love new craft supplies. I find a bit of actual buffing with something soft helps with the RubnBuff. I don’t know how it would buff on all materials but it def works well on metal. I just got all the colors I didn’t have. I’m excited to try them but my craft space is otherwise occupied right now. I’m also going to have to try your super sticky double sided tape trick. It worked a treat for Ara over at Bentley House. You’re so very clever 🧐. xx

Yes, the double-sided tape is a godsend. I think I'll buy some weaker tape four things like paper etc. the flooring tape is extremely strong and it's really overkill for attaching a piece of magazine paper to cereal box.
I think we're galaxy twins...I also cringe at waste and alway scrape or lick foil covered under lids. One of my biggest pet peeves us cooking shows were they don't fully scrape the bowl and get every drop into whatever baking dish is needed. I have toclise my eyes.😊

TIPS: There are a few different types of Shrinky Dink plastic, Crystal, pre sanded and print & shrink.
It will curl up then flatten when finished shrinking (if it's not complete flat immediately use a glass to flatten) ... you can also use a toaster oven to shrink the plastic.
If you have a Cricut Maker you can use the print & cut shrink plastic to use the print and cut feature.
You'll want to seal the finished shrink project because if it's exposed to water it could ruin your design.

I love all of your miniatures. I have a book nook and need to make a couple of mannequins for the robe makers shop. Any ideas? Polly pocket is about the right size but that option is too expensive. Also your deadpan delivery cracks me up.
Air-dry clay or polymer clay. You can create a crumpled aluminium foil core, cover it with a fairly thin skin of the clay. Model on top of that with more clay.
That sounds like a tiny project. I think using cheap files to carve some wood or using polymer clay would probably work.
I swear by that Art Deco ultra matte varnish, it's the most matte brush-on I've found, and also great for prepping plastic or glass surfaces that otherwise are not easily painted. Most of the time, it is far more matte than the matte mod podge, not sure why it was not in this case.
I've had the exact same experience. Whenever I've used matte Mod Podge on wood or paper products, it leaves a noticeable sheen. Maybe when it comes to non-porous surfaces like glass or plastic, it doesn't leave a sheen?

First I want to say that I really like your videos. You are very "to the point" and that's what ai need when I want to watch videos on my 15 minute breaks at work. I'm litterally an infant in the miniature dollhouse craft. My 13 year old daughter has a thing for all things mini, so to get some bonding time with her, I decided that I wanted to make a replica of our new house that we just moved into 3 weeks ago. I want us to make all the furniture, and things ourselves like you do. I understand you have tons of comments, and it's hard to reply to every comment, but it would be so awesome if you could give me a reply, and help me out with this idea that I have. Since my house is pretty filled already, and there's not much floor space, or even desk top space, and since I want to spend a lot of time and energy doing this project, I want it to be on display, so I was thinking that it would be best for me to build a wall mounted "dollhouse" aka replica of our home. So how can I do this, I'm wondering. I tried b searching for my idea on CZcams, but came up with nothing. I have this idea that I could make it using long deep wall mounted shelves. Just regular shelves with brackets underneath for support. I'm thinking I can use foam board from dollar tree to make walls, and a roof by attaching it to the shelves. So basically the shelves would act as a floor. We live in Philly in the city, so our house is a long skinny row home, so that's why a regular long shelf would work better than the wall mounted cube storage shelf would. I saw on Amazon that I can get 2 of these decent sized shelves at a good price. The second shelf can be upstairs, and I can even make stairs going up the wall into the second shelf. What do you think of this idea? And do you have any ideas of wall mounted dollhouses of your own that you could offer. I would love to hear your input. Thank you. Keep the videos coming. I love the idea of a wall mounted dollhouse. Earth & Tree Miniatures in Amherst, NH has a bunch of dollhouse like that on display. I think foam board would work well for it, esp since it's so lightweight. I recommend using double sided flooring tape to attach it in a double layer thickness for strength, at least on the exterior/side walls.

I don't have any videos about it at this time, but I have been posting behind the scenes organization type stuff on my patreon for my paying members. I have a bunch of small organizers with little compartments. I'll collect random minis I made on a tray and then disperse them into the smaller organizers. I use little paint mixing cups from Amazon to store really tiny pieces. I have a bead organizer filled with trash I use for crafting. I have a bunch of drop front shoe boxes that are plastic with lids that I use to organize miniatures. I have a lot of stuff going on LOL

Same here. I never read the instructions, but according to my viewers, you're supposed to shrink it in the oven 😆 I was just copying what I've seen on CZcams. Maybe it shrinks even more in the oven...
I hate it when I forget stuff in my car overnight and it freezes! Had an unfortunate experience with a soda can once lol
Oh, that does not sound good. One time I bought a Christmas cactus impulsively when I was shopping at aldi. I left it in the car and it froze solid.

The heat gun worked quite well, but the instructions do say to use the oven.

I love the little glass jar. Is there a good way to give these jars a color but to be seen through? I have acrylic paint markers & bottled paints. Would they work or does it need a specific type of paint to be opaque?
I've been thinking of how to add color to glass. Maybe I'll do some experimenting and release a video on this topic soon. I have several ideas.

The Rub 'n Buff has a very slight smell. I only smell it in the tube, not on the brush. I didn't notice an odor with anything else I used.
