  • A fellow shipped this Champ to me after purchasing on ebay. It was understood to be dead. He feared a bad power transformer, however that was not the case. Simple wiring errors generated the malfunction. Now the MojoTone is barking away happily. Great Class A 6V6 sound restored.

Being from Chicago I had to google" the Ghoul". I found out that track you played was actually his predecessor Ghoulardi. He had a mad scientist voice and wise-cracking
attitude but the ghoul ( Ron Sweed)was a mere second rate crazy guy that apparently couldn't match wits with Chicago's Svengoolie ( Jerry G.Bishop)!
The Ghoul was on Chicago TV for a very short time but couldn't replace him ,he wasn't too funny in comparison . So a few years later Rich Koz made his first appearance
as the Son of Svengoolie. Which thanks to cable TV and more $ , made Rich the #1 "ghoul" on TV .Happy Halloween and Stay Sick!

Terry, I love your videos! I'm fairly certain that this is not a Mojotone kit. I have one of their 5F1 kits and they come with different parts. The printing on the chassis is different too. I'm glad you brought it back to life! Keep the videos coming!

I don't think that is a Mojotone. Could be a boothill. MOJO doesn't have the 8 ohm tap. And it's got the Princeton style resister and cap on the far right of the board. Nice rig!

I pulled down the MOJO-Tone 5F1 Champ schematic - and it correctly shows only one 1M ohm resistor connected to Input 1. Who knows why this guy added another 1M resistor to input 2 ? He obviously didn't understand the input schematic or the design objectives !!

It's just a princeton input circuit. No problem. I think it's a boothill amp. I always love the princeton over the Champ. The Mojo is period accurate and doesn't have the 8 ohm tap! Again better because you can use a 10" 8 ohm speaker for more low end and a fatter sound!

Why do I see discrepancies between 5F1 schematics online? Some show a 1.5k connected to pin 5 of the 6V6. Those same schematics also show a 470Ω resistor between pin 4 and the 2nd filter cap. Other schematics don't even show these components. Why is that?

I have also used www.ebay.com/str/musicalpowersupplies . They have been around for awhile, but occasionally change where they have their transformers produced. My ears aren't good enough to tell the difference in sound production, but the few I used did not have any electrical problems. I currently have their 15SE in a Dave Hunter "Two Stroke" running an old RCA 6l6. It's my favorite amp to play in my lair.

So I had to google Ghoulardi and found this interesting video ( czcams.com/video/e52cXCrmauc/video.html ) that includes archival clips. At 45 seconds into the video ( czcams.com/video/e52cXCrmauc/video.html?t=45 ), Ghoulardi gets the camera man to open a small box with electronics inside. Apparently, the box provides some sort of shock as a gag. What could that circuit be??? Maybe it was designed in Portughoul... ;-)
