  • Our late book club episode for May about "Creatures of Light and Darkness" by Roger Zelazny. "Creatures of Light and Darkness" by Roger Zelazny is a science fiction/fantasy novel that blends elements of Egyptian mythology with a futuristic setting. AKA the origin of the sentiment that too many dicks spoil the soup.
Did we love it? Was it readable? Was it's highly praised rich imagery (a man burns off his own dick with a red hot robot hand so...) and non linear narrative worth it? Did we find it though provoking or rage inducing? Could we find anything nice to say at all?
I'll let you guess but you can and should just go ahead and listen to the episode to find out.

Not my favorite Zelazny book, but still an interesting read. The book reads better knowing that it is not really a "story," but an experimental prose poem that purposely plays with reader's expectations. The confusion is on purpose, and it works well. Zelazny never wanted to publish it. The real tragedy was that a bunch of excess copies were supposed to be pulped, and the publisher pulped Nine Princess in Amber instead. 😢
