Uh, I could never call being beaten by NZ an honour. Not sure I would ever even enjoy being beaten by any team particularly the ABs but what I did have for that man was respect. He was a fantastic athlete. Just a pity he didn't play for South Africa although I think if he did he would probably get a little chirped at for being a model. Not sure.

@@JayKay-on2gr for me, my favourite game from Dan Carter was the second test in the 2005 lions/NZ series. It was raining heavily and thus NZ's usually incredible running game was neutralized. Keep in mind, this was when Carter was still really young and only recently put in as a fly-half (I think the Crusaders still played him at 13 at the start of the season).
What followed was just a masterclass of tactical and positional kicking and Carter cemented himself that day in my mind as probably the best rugby player I've ever seen.
Drops against Books in semifinal and Aussie in final RWC 2015. Two drops in crucial moments that changed the momentum of the matches. Pure masterclass…….best 10 in the history of rugby.

I'm an Aussie and after almost 50 years of watching Rugby I rate Dan Carter as #1, best ever. He was always a pleasure to watch.

@Mac Cleba Injury prone towards the end of his career, but you don't play 112 matches for the All Blacks if you're always out injured.
All those players are one dimensional next to Dan Carter. He had far more to his play.
@Mac Cleba You've just spewed a load of names out. Barry John is just a ridiculous suggestion. Great in the amateur era but Carter would have played him off the park - standards had moved on so far by the time the latter was playing. Have a look at the appalling defending in John's day and the amout of errors made generally.
Carter was better than all of the above - easily. He's the most complete back ever, and he completed the best individual performance ever in the 2nd Test against the British Lions in 2005.

What I like most about carter ,
There were many different layers of excellence in his game , the highlights reel will show the flashy stuff understandably, but he could play in the trenches too and steer the team around the park when risk’s weren’t required.
Most 10s excell in one or the other not both .

Nothing here to rival Barry John in New Zealand in 1971 with the British Lions. His panache almost makes Dan Carter look pedestrian and not sure if Carter even demonstrates the same skill level as Phil Bennett or Jonathan (Jiffy) Davies at his nonchalant peak.

You left out the pivotal moment he proved he was the greatest, when he chipped over Johnny Wilkinson and outpaced the Lions to score in the corner. That moment signalled the passing of the torch
Carter in my mind was the G.O.A.T in the number 10 jersey.
He was not only the best number 10 of all time, but a rugby legend, and a freak in the sport

I realised how Dan Carter was such a good kicker. It helps having such soft comfortable undies like he used when modeling that it freed up the full movement range of his legs. He had no problem using the full extent of his leg reach when kicking at the post. Some people chafe or are tight. But Dan always managed to look after himself 100% which is why he was a phenomenal kicker.

This is just highlights from RWCs unfortunately. Also of course his defensive prowess in tacklingx running down opponents and defensive organization was also amazing as was his attacking vision and setting up the attack. His tactical kicking amazing and also not shown. But yes what is shown he was also amazing at. A truly complete 10 and a GOAT of backs.

Yeah showing conversions in a highlighs reel seems rather strange given the amount of spectacular highlights Dan has had over the years.

All Black Richie Mo'unga is one of the worlds best number 10 now! If not the best! And still getting better. Yes Dan Carter was a great number 10 back in the day and others too.
I never knew that DC played centre until I saw this clip. Obviously that was very early in his career but he was still brilliant. The best fly-half I've ever seen!
Once Carter left the game I haven't been that interested in the game anymore like I used to. He really is a once in a generation player and the most complete rugby player I've ever seen. Players these days just can't compare with the man and his world record points in tests I'm betting will never be beaten.

I love mehrtens as a 10 who was an awesome kicker and had great wits, Spencer had flare just like barret now, however Dan carter as great was his attack his defence was next level and classic book tackles, no10s are aren't considered great defenders but always good attackers, carter changed that. Baa baa. Goat.. matched with kicks. Offloads. Nec level

South Africa have now got back to back RWC winning titles and have always been one of two best in the world - we knew you’d be back.

Taking nothing away from the performance but it’s crazy how much the forward pack have modernised, anytime the backs broke the line the forwards seemed to leave it up to the backs to chase the ball carriers, now most forwards are almost as fast as the backs
That's how the all blacks have always played. One of the reasons they have always dominated since the days of "the originals"
