- The US presidential election will take place this November and Trump is polling well. What’s his appeal? Why does he remain so popular with voters?
Jasmyn Jordan is a young, black student of political science and international relations at the University of Iowa. In the 1970s, Jack Gilchrist served in the US air force. Now 69, he and his son run a metal fabricating company. Jesus Marquez is in his 40s. He grew up in Mexico and today he has his own radio show. All three are fervent Trump supporters. We went to Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada to meet them and find out why they believe he should be the next president. A report by Ines Pohl.

as a black african who migrated to America. I find this comment fascinated. As a kid, I was told democrates are your friends but recently I realized, democrates were actually leading every decision I made. Now, since I left the democrate party. I became very much aware of how undemocratic the democrat party is. I don't want to disrespect others' sad attempts to sympathize with other, but we need to understand America does not favor one over the other. FYI: Libertarians are usually aligning with either the Libertarian party or the Republican party, because both favor small government and a greater degree of freedom than the Democrats.
A long, long time ago, people elected - and looked up to - leaders who were more intelligent, more articulate, and more informed than they were. They appreciated smart, educated people running their nation.
Today, they want someone just like them - someone as common and coarse as they are. Americans are now afraid and contemptuous of higher education.
So, instead of articulate and intelligent leadership, we have leaders as vulgar, inarticulate, and lowbrow as they are. They find this reassuring - and that's sad.
By lowering their standards, they've lowered their nation's.

Healthcare costs are an evergreen issue that doesn't get resolved inspite of efforts made by political class, manufacturing job losses continue decade after decade, wages haven't gone up at least since the 80s, immigration reform hasn't been done for years which results in an immigration crisis and families have been fragmenting with no solution in sight. Republicans are taking advantage of all these issues but the political establishment has done nothing to resolve these contentious issues.

Homeschoolers perform more highly in academics.
Even the New York Times poll shows the shift to Trump among educated and Hispanics. DW may have done a bad job showing it, but it is a fact. Trump support is growing in Black community, too. If he only gets 20% of the Black Male vote he wins. 2024 is about perhaps 250,000 votes in swing states. Right now, it's advantage Trump. DW is correct about that.
College education dosent mean a person is educated
It is very clear there is a common thread of trauma in the featured subjects. Granted there is editing involved so there is not an objective view but nonetheless this much is clear.
Beyond the pettiness of politics, we need to engage with our trauma, grief; we can help others through their trauma and grief.
Subject 1 - loneliness and isolated world view
Subject 2 - inflexibility; misguided view that “Independence” means “strength”, that being “calm” is somehow virtuous
Subject 3 - finite mindset and a view that others are taking away from him
Americans want to MAGA? Well, a national wide reconciliation with trauma will almost definitely do that. But tbh few have the courage to do so. It’s easier to blame others, easier to believe merely voting someone in will solve all of one’s problems. It’s avoiding our emotions and avoiding developing our emotional maturity.

IMO how can large swathes of the population not be touched by trauma in one way or another. After all the wars, all the dark histories, ongoing injustices..it seems illogical to deduce otherwise. For one, we already know veterans return home with PTSD. For one, we know that people are caught in addictions, in self harm. There are cases every day. IMO in these 3 subjects, it seems evident there is a running thread.
But it’s not their fault per se. They are symptoms of a broader issue. We as a collective keep dismissing and avoiding IMO the central issue. We keep disregarding the issue, we keep disregarding each other. On and on we go. Generation after generation. As the youngest of the 3 subjects, we already see it play out in her young life, regrettable to say.
I’ve also noticed an extreme lack of empathy towards others.

I suggest that you really look at why people want to vote for him or better or why they don't want to vote democrat. Calling it a cult is similar to calling something divine because you cannot explained it. I am not saying you are but some people become blinded by hate. I see many pressures on society such as people being told they are not a man anymore they are now a sis man, being told you are a racist, schools (Gov't) teaching values to their children, allowing open borders and borrowing to give these new Americans credit cards when we have a homeless crisis and while politicians campaign on the poor getting poorer. Whether these societal pressures are right or wrong doesn't matter societies take a long time to change usually 2 generations. From my perspective Trump is a product of society saying slow down. Why does this basically feel like an advert for Trump? This is only the republican primary, meaning his opponent isn't Biden, it's other losers. Simple, believe there is an entrenched ruling class which wields power over much of the top private and public institutions for its own benefit at the cost of the interest of the wider nation. Then assume any outsider to that system who may try to enact new policy benefiting the wider population at the cost of the ruling class would be attacked relentlessly by all the organs available to those in charge of the power structure.
If you believe that Trump is that outsider to the system, the charges against him are actually signs he is still opposed to the corrupt powers that be, rather than ruled/compromised by them. It is logical then to see numerous legal charges brought by politically extreme DAs as a selling point rather than a detriment.
Add to that the wider scepticism of locking up political rivals in general shared by most people in democracies, it's not unreasonable to still find him electable. (Aren't we all supposed to be super mad and find a Russian politician dying in prison as unconsciousable treatment of an opposition, while the Democrats try to throw trump in prison for long enough he would die there?)
How can you think any of the charges matter?
