The comment she mentioned is just illogical on its own, in my opinion... it´s like saying "I can´t believe you hired a lawyer... just look up stuff on the internet and deal with it on your own" or "Just ask a friend to pull your tooth out, you don´t need a dentist"... that´s why there are so many different professions to choose from, because not everyone is an expert in everything and that´s extremely valuable, because by "trading" our gifts and services (in exchange for money), we save time and nerves.... that´s the way we actually help each other out, probabaly since the beginning of human life...

Maintenance tip: Once I got myself decluttered and organized, I setup a strategic maintenance routine to keep things tidy. 1) Every Sunday night I take a laundry basket around the house and collect anything that is out of place. I make a second route putting things away. Takes about 10 minutes. 2) On my main level, I have about 8 large drawers or banks of drawers, 12 cabinets, and 4 closets. Kids rooms are excluded. Each week I take 15 minutes and reorganize one of the cabinets, closets or banks of drawers. It doesn't take long since they are already organized. I cycle through all of them 2x a year and it keeps things as pristine as the day I finished my declutter. Good luck!!!

I've learned a lot from him! It helps that I've given him a life where he's not worried about scarcity- if a sweatshirt's not comfortable and you don't want to wear it, he's never NEEDED to hang onto it in case like, the zipper on his good sweatshirt breaks. Breaking out of that "I NEED TO HANG ONTO EVERYTHING" mindset is so hard!

The tapes from his childhood, the sounds he used to hear as a child, the tape of his prerecorded “auto-responses” in order to deflect rather than deal with the issue. I used to get offended, but now I see it as an opportunity to turn the tapes off and allow God to show us a better way. A new sound. New responses. The only way tackle old challenges and is to start.

A few things I’ve learned through my own trial and error:
Don’t buy replacements for more than 1 extra use (Costco is great but leads to disorganization for me)
Don’t sit down and don’t change clothes when you set your mind to a task
Have a routine goal each day (eg: unload dishwasher in the morning, tidy up the kitchen while you make coffee & breakfast)
Be present in every room for at least 2 minutes and you’ll find dozens of things to tidy up
Make a bucket full of general cleaning supplies: a duster, microfiber cloth, dusting spray, multi-surface cleaning solution, windex, Clorox wipes, whatever will make it easier for you to grab and go when you want to do a quick tidy up
Every 3 months (mark your calendar for reminders!!), go through every cabinet, drawer, and closet. Donate/throw away unused or expired things. Also change your razor and toothbrush heads, fridge water and air filters, and in home air filters
    Change your loofa every month
I’m sure there’s more but my brain is losing focus 😂

I am a naturally neat and organized person so I don’t know why this video was recommended to me 😂 BUT I cried while watching it. You are changing your girls’ lives for sure. I say that as a child of very messy parents who ended up marrying a hoarder. We are divorced now, my mental health couldn’t take it. Like you said, like any addiction or struggle, you cannot tell them to just clean up. This is for sure a form or side effect of anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD- and there is help. It may not seem
like being messy or unorganized is a big deal, but it absolutely can be a HUGE deal. You and your family are beautiful, btw 😊

    • @christamckee3997

@ofthegirl, hello, I just wanted to say I love your response here, I have always myself been or was expected to be a neat and organized person growing up as a child my mother expected my sister and I to do all the cleaning and up keep of the home, so I carried that expectation into my adult life, but did not put it on my kids to do. However, now in my older years (49yrs old) I don’t know what has happened to me, I suffer tremendously with anxiety, depression, OCD and ADD, and have physical mobility issues that affects my ability to do the things I used to be able to do in My Home. My husband, grew up in an unorganized messy home because his mother was one that I think thought that spending time and doing things with her children was more important than worrying about the house being organized and clean, so my husband has that same thought process and thinks I hold myself prisoner to the maintenance and duties of what the house looks like and that has now carried over to my children, so I fight a losing battle with the entire family! I can’t get them to realize that it effects my mental health tremendously when the house is a disaster, and makes me feel so disrespected by them not considering my feelings about it. But what do you do, I’m only one person and yes I’m a stay at home mom but it’s still so overwhelming that I can’t find the courage and motivation to do anything about it! I wish I had the guts to say okay my dear family since you all don’t want to help me with what I need in the house to feel at peace, then I’m just going to hire someone to come in and do it for me. So for the long post, guess your response just struck my feelings and I needed to vent. Lol

@@christamckee3997 by all means, vent! I have struggled with anxiety and ADHD so growing up with messy parents was tough. I never felt like I had a good place to study and concentrate and nobody understand that my surroundings made it so hard. Then I married a hoarder. I was at home with 4 little kids and I went into such a depression fighting the clutter alllll the time! My ex was a great dad and a good guy, so it feels bad to say that I just couldn’t stay and support him through the hoarding. But my mental health was suffering so bad. I tried all kinds of medication but most of it made me feel numb and I started to resent that I was the one looking for help when I want the one hoarding! It’s just one of those things where people will only get help when THEY want it. I’m 49 too and all of my kids are adults now, 3 of them are so neat and clean and won’t even visit their dad :( But one shows the same tendencies as him and it worries me. I really loved this video. I think it takes incredible strength to recognise where you need help and ask for it. Not everyone has a group of friends that would want to invest time in helping someone declutter their house. Full kudos to you for engaging a professional. The completed task so far probably wouldn't have been as effective or could have created tensions between you and friends if they had helped you. I know when my sister has helped me with decluttering, I totally hate it. She is far more cut throat and ruthless than me, and I feel like I am being judged. I am a bit of a hoarder and one of my goals this year (2023) is to declutter more and have spaces in my home beautifully organised so that I can easily find things. Some areas are and some aren't, but I have a long way to go with systemising or making things easy to find. There is nothing worse than getting frustrated, let alone wasting time, not being able to find the thing 😀

I am a busy full time nurse, going through grad school, mom of two boys 9 and 7, and a husband who works overnight shift work. To tell you time is not on our side is an understatement and free time is rare and when we have off days we just want to spend them with the kids. BUT, so much stuff has piled up over the years and I feel exactly like how you described, paralyzed and overwhelmed by decisions. I feel like where do I start and I am in the same boat you were in with needing to separate the boys and give them their own space since they share a room now. I want to do what you did and hire someone because I honestly think having a neutral party come in and see a space and what it could be is much better but we just don’t have the money right now. But seeing your video gives me so much encouragement because it makes me feel like it can be done and if I just tackle it one room at a time I can do it and allowing myself the 4 hr increments like you guys did makes me feel like on my off days I can dedicate a solid 4 hours and the rest of the day is family time. Thank you so much for sharing this and being so transparent because it makes me feel like I am not alone in this struggle. Very inspiring video and look forward to seeing more of your future videos.

I can't thank you. Something you said released me from Guilt. I. I own a thrift shop and I have a personal problem with clutter. But one of my volunteers is A wonderful organizer. However I would be exhausted everyday she helped me. And you gave me the answer I had Decision fatigue. I Felt like my head would explode if I had to make one more decision on what went where. I'm so relieved to find out that that's not unusual with certain people. Love your video And even at my advanced age of 76 you have helped me. Thank you and God-bless.

Hello, first time here on this channel! THANK YOU so much for sharing this. I think that hiring a professional to help here was a great move. It’s kind of like hiring a personal training to help kick start a health journey, no shame in that game either. Just wanted to say that your smile 😀 is just sunshine, and you radiate positively, as we need that and here for it! Thank you! 😊

Your kids play-hiding in the closet 😭is SO CUTE! What a fun & informative video. As someone who does professional cleaning & organizational help, I find it SO important for everyone to take a step back from their judgment of others' spaces. Everyone has something they wish to change in their home system. Compassion goes so very far! ☺♥

I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!! Organization is NOT easy. Many times when I watched your videos I genuinely felt so badly for you because I could see the struggle. I have a very hard time with clutter - I can't have a cluttered space. This being said, I not a professional organizer. I have often times moved things out of my line of sight never to be found again 😂 I am glad that you were strong enough to reach out for help. This was actually a form of self-care that you did for yourself. You did your best and in the end, you sought help when you were ready and that's what matters. 😊

My friends don't have the energy time nor expertise to be this detailed to organize. They're all my age, tired etc. Wow this is amazing! I love this idea because paying for the hour is motivation to focus and push through it. I've been trying to go through toys little by little and my gosh. So overwhelming. I have 4 kids, 3 are girls so my youngest daughter has a massive toy collection that has just become overwhelming.

If you think well it took x many years for it to get like this, its going to take time for it to be shrunk again, I find that helps. We want it sorted because it grows without noticing and then one day we trip over this mountain and say "where did you come from" 🤣. And our lives get more complications and distractions and the last thing we need is to be hampered by STUFF. So just keep chipping away at it, I've had several goes at multiple areas of the house and I'm still not done. I'm definitely eager for that day where I'm on to the maintenance phase. But each clear out is a victory.

Women did everything under the roof of their homes. We put on ourselves the pressure that I ought to know / do all this myself. It is such a relief to hear you say that each one is blessed with some talent and not all talents and to accept it. And to let people do our house and the world will be better place. Huge relief ! Thanks for saying it in words. I needed to hear it today.

This was an extremely relatable video!! The overwhelm is so stressful. When we moved for my husband's job, the relocation benefit included a professional organizer and it was SO AMAZING. I never would've been able to pack up and move the house without her first helping me unload so much stuff. (My husband had already moved out for the job so I was on my own for the actual packing and moving. 😭)

First-time viewer, new subscriber. God knew I needed to see this. After finally looking into hiring a professional organizer, I began to question whether that process would be even more painful than continuing to plod along (rather fruitlessly, if I’m being honest) on my own. Thank you so very much for your honesty and insight. And for pointing out that God has given us ALL gifts to share-and that there should be NO shame in letting others share their gifts with us.

There is so much Psychology in someone that can help people declutter. You have to deal with other people's emotions to their stuff. Organizing is more technical than people realize. I have a strong issue with throwing stuff out. I symbolize things, papers, clothes, toys it makes it harder to just throw away. Having someone with me who can help will be amazing.

Decluttering is hard, but the more you do it the easier it gets. It also makes you think twice before you start bringing a bunch of unnecessary stuff back into your house, or before you spend money on that impulse item. I’m glad you were able to achieve this level of order in your home. I know you must be breathing a lot easier now. 😊❤️

Oh my goodness! You sound like me! I can crunch numbers, make budgets, see trends, etc. so much so that I have my own bookkeeping company. Seeing a mess in my home absolutely paralyzes me. It’s like I don’t know what to do, where to start, nothing. I’ve been wanting to hire a housekeeper just to keep up with the things I can’t keep up with, but really I need a professional organizer. My dh hasn’t wanted to have someone come into our home to help. He keeps saying we can do it ourselves. I’m going to show him your two videos and hope for the best! From another 40yo to another, Thank you!!
