Tribbles Side-by-Side Comparison

- Ten years ago, the crew of Deep Space 9 went "back in time" and visted TOS episode "The Trouble with Tribbles". As a huge fan of both series, I wanted to show one of the scenes that they altered to insert DS9 characters into the then-30-year-old film. Note subtleties like Shatner's glance to nobody that now evokes a flirtatious response. Also note that is some cases they re-framed the original shot, but in most cases not. I sped up, slowed down, or froze the Original show where necessary to match the segments used frame for frame.

Probably the single greatest love letter to the Original Series ever aired, and it was an episode of DS9. When they announced they were going to "Forrest Gump" the DS9 crew into this episode, purists objected...but, y'know, it's one of my favorites. The love and care the creators took with this episode is clear in every single frame. The people who did this really and honestly loved Star Trek, and it shows.
There are lots of other different smaller and larger TOS-references during DS9's entire 7-year run. :-)
(The mirror universe; Kor, Koloth and Kang played by their original actors; Cestus III; Pike City; the Christopher Pike medal of valor and many more)
It worked because it was an homage that took the original episode seriously rather than a parody that lampooned it.
for being done in the 90's it's pretty much flawless! The meeting at the end of the episode is really clever!
They did do a good job on this in DS 9.
Jadzia Dax was just made for the TOS uniforms. The boys from Picard's era onwards just don't know what they were missing. Redshirts, Redskirts, LOL
"The boys from Picard's era onwards just don't know what they were missing."
I don't know about that. Tasha Yar, Dr. Crusher, and Counselor Troi all looked outstanding in their form-fitting TNG uniforms.
@@Durwood71 I'll second that.
@@Durwood71 Of course you like the boyish onesie, which is why Warmaker said "The boys from Picard's era onwards just don't know what they were missing" If all you get is androgynous then you are obviously going to be attracted to the skin tight female androgynous and anything else that looks vaguely female, even drag kweens. We on the other hand grew up in a generation that actually knew the difference between a man and a woman because believe me that all of the men knew a woman when we saw one!
@@carlchapman4053 If you think Gates McFadden in her prime looked androgynous in her TNG costume, then I honestly don't know what to tell you. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@Durwood71 That Is exactly the problem both myself and Warmaker was saying because you honestly can't tell the difference! Don't get me wrong, I am sure that you get fully aroused at people in androgynous outfits but just like people growing up with only the choice of soy milk or almond milk you will never know what real dairy milk tastes like. I was 17 When TNG was shown in England and I appreciate the uniforms they all wore but there is no way the TNG uniforms compare to even daytime TV outfits back then.
The Deep Space 9 episode is the 6th one from the 5th season (#103) and is called "Trials and Tribble-ations"...It was made in 1996 in honor of the 30th anniversary of TOS. If you search my name or MrPlays, you'll see all four of the comparison clips I made. Thanks! Gary Peterson
These are really great!!! I've always wanted to see the side by sides of these two episodes. Thank you for taking the time to post. A wonderful job! Cheers.
"When Kirk sat on that tribble I half expected it to go off."
Pause now to consider what it means for a tribble to go off.
They were looking for a secret bomb planted by a time traveler. She thought that the bomb might be concealed in the tribble. Anyone watching the episode knows exactly what she meant.
Dax is a TOS uniformYUM!!
Put her rear on main-screen!
Big respect to who made this video and even bigger respect to who was in charge of sfx for this episode
Dax: He had a hands of a surgeon *raises eyebrows*
Me: 😳
And that's the real reason he's called Bones.
If only the hands had been mine!
All we can say is Dax, in any host, knows how to get around. XD
The Tribbles ate the grain
The Tribbles ate the grain
The colonists are going to starve
The Tribbles ate the grain
Eat the Tribbles!
I posted a video on CZcams of people singing The Tribbles ate the Grain
Soft tribble, warm tribble
Eating all my lunch
Happy tribble, purring tribble
Munch munch munch
Cool video. I never noticed DS9 changed the framing on the scene after Dax gave Kirk the shrug. Great video regarding two great episodes :)
Those new model shots of the Enterprise are gorgeous. It's also interesting how they zoomed the shot in from 0:32 to 0:43 in order to not have to go to the trouble of including Dax. That probably saved them several hours of work.
Well, at least Dax was able to master the "Yeoman, stick your butt out" stance before they boarded the Enterprise. But how did Spock fail to overhear what they were saying? He can eavesdrop from the other side of a football field.
The hands of a 'surgeon,' huh?
Dax certainly got around. :)
Wow that's amazing! Thanks a lot for sharing this.
"He had the hands of a surgeon." 😆
@armalarm Yes, the original. NCC-1701. "No bloody A,B,C, or D," as Scotty would say.
very interesting. both episodes rank among my faves
Watch tos, the Tribble episode was my favorite. Now that I'm watching ds9, it is fun to watch it through that lense. I love the side by side, great work!
No one ever gave so much credit to a TOS female outfit as did Terry Ferrell.
So in a strange twist of fate Terry Farrell is sharing the bridge with her father-in-law, Leonard Nimoy, in this episode.
Gotta say that Dax would have fit in just fine in those old shots
you are a true star trek fan. Live long and prosper
I thought they replaced some actors so we can rewatch the original episode ans say, "Hey, that actor is in fact, from DS9", but no, what we see here is the original timeline and a new one.
I love Jadza’s TMI.
How did they do all the compositing? Flame? AfterEffects? An amazing job considering it was done in the mid-90's
@Calriec You mean the original enterprise, and not enterprise A?
In zeez episode Scotty and I got into a bar fight with zee Klingons, Keptin.
@nickhintonlink When Sisko mentioned it was the "first" Enterprise, now it is clear that he was reffering to kirk's enterprise as the first since the federation was formed. the show Enterprise was taken place before the federation.
The song of the Great Tribble Hunt? XD
You can never have just one.
would be pretty awesome
@RipUaNew1 DS9 episode had a time travel plot that had the crew travel back to Kirk's time to prevent a Klingon saboteur.
"he had the hands of a surgeon..."
HEY OHHHHHH!!!
Did she say that she met McCoy at Ole Miss? or Old Miss?
That is a examble whow it´s work without destroy the timeline. Well done. NOT THAT crap from JJ Abrams. That is real Star Trek !!!
Too bad we didn't see that...
Or who knows, alternate reallity, maybe the ex-wife WAS Emony Dax? ;)
Everyone does a Trouble with Tribbles tribute, even My Little Pony & Sealab 2021.
@armalarm Also, this episode was the first time Kirk's Enterprise had appeared since Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
The bridge appeared (via holodec) in "Relics".
Of course this wasn't Kirk's only Enterprise as he also captained NCC1701-A
True, the one seen here is between humans and Klingons while the one in the 2009 film was a rough up between humans.
0:38 Why’d they have to add in a beeping sound effect when Kirk contacts Bones?
I think that's Sisko typing on his console - although it does sound as if he's playing Space Invaders!
@@RJSRdg That’s the exact same sound effect?
omg that would b cool
or nichelle as uhura's grandmother giving out advise like guinan.
@dadoctah in this case, what it means for a tribble to go off is that it was going to explode, kill Kirk and rewrite history.
@DarlingMsM
Cause a Captain should know his crew, at least how they look like. Especially the part of the crew that is allowed to be on the bridge. ;-)
Except for Space Seed and directly ripping it off.
Dax and Sisko just met the doctor Leonard Huey (Bones) McCoy himself.
Tribbles. :) I want one.
Knowing Abrams, he won't.
Nyet
Even in 2007 this was low res
Lets make a new timeline so I can do a plot with whatever I want in it! then I don't have to bind myself to any of star trek's petty rules!
-J.J. Douchams
Technically speaking, everything that happened in Star Trek Enterprise is still something that happened in the "alternate timeline" of the new movies because that show happened 100 years before the timeline separated.
Persona Ohnlyne enterprise, sure because that predates Nero's arrival from the future
gruuu gruuu
J.J. Abrams is a fine Keptin
No, he wouldn't think that since racism had been wiped out for many years by then.
Kirk taking all the tribbles... lol.
0:15 Get out of Kirk's Chair Tribble! Respect The Chair Respect The Chair.
Knowing Abrams, the next movie will just be them fighting the Borg, cause he can only make greatest hits Trek.
I liked this esp but the way the went from the future to STAR PAST made no sense. They all just "wished" around some religious item and next thing you know they are in the past on the Org ENTERPRISE. Again I liked the show and the IG affects were well done but HOW they got back to the past was totally unreal as well as they getting back to their present.
What was unreal about it? An object created by extremely powerful beings who are living outside of linear time. Makes perfect sense that it is easy to go back in time as well as forward.
