Fun fact: while Tangled is set in 1780 (18/19th century), Gothel's dress is actually a renaissance-styled dress that women used to wear in medieval times (around the 15th century). And in the Mother Knows Best song, she also mentions "The Plague" (the Black Death) as one of the dangers of the outside world. This is meant to emphasize how old she actually is.

Honestly, "Tangled" is what helped me realize that my parents were abusive, so props to Disney for showing such a realistic villain and for how well they portrayed gaslighting.
This is partly why I like watching ppl reacting to the film but can never actually watch it myself lol it becomes way darker once you actually recognize certain behaviors/patterns, etc. Hugs to you

@@ShinyAvalon especially when Rapunzel first leaves and goes back and forth between her elation and her guilt/fear of how Gothel will react. When Gothel confronted Rapunzel, Rapunzel looked absolutely terrified (look how wide her eyes were, her expression, the utter fear on her face). When Gothel fell out of the tower, in spite of everything Rapunzel reached out for her. Loving abusive people is so complicated, especially when they're your family.
This movie definetly helped me as well. Its nice to see a disney movie or movie in general that represents my life and others as well.

Whenever Mother Gothel shows Rapunzel any affection, she's actually showing it to her hair. Like kissing the top of her head.
In contrast, when Eugene does the same, he pushes her hair away from her face.

The "flashback scene" was her realizing the kingdom's symbol was in all her art. It's there unintentionally because she subconsciously remembers the symbol.
Maximus gives Rapunzel a look up and down at their first meeting, recognizes her as the princess and follows her orders accordingly. He was raised in the kingdom surrounded by paintings of her as a child and knows the story (bc animals are like people in disney. He cares about the lost princess which is why he tried so hard to get the crown back.
Idk if someone's already pointed this out, but the scene where Rapunzel's looking at the little flag then her paintings is when she realized that one of the first things she's seen (the sun symbol) has been embedded so well in her brain that she subconsciously included it in her works.

You know the animators when full out when neither the King or Queen have any lines, but you know EXACTLY what they're thinking! Just from their facial expressions!
ETA: Rapunzel had never seen the symbol of Corona (the sun), yet she had subconsciously incorporated it into the negative space of her paintings around her room!
That's because it's part of her physical DNA since her Mum drank tea or something made from the flower, giving her her special hair/healing ability.

Rapunzel THINKS she's never seen Corona, or its crest. But it was prominently embroidered on the mobile over her crib, as her parents watched over her.

I was in high school when this movie came out. I was watching a movie with my best friend at his house when his mom made him go with his little sister to see the new Disney princess movie. They invited me along. My friend and I weren't happy about it but I went with him because, well that's what friends do.
We couldn't believe how incredibly good that movie was, especially when we had such low expectations. It was earth-shattering at the time. I'll never forget it!

I have a similar Disney story, I was at a buddy's birthday and part way through, one of the guys left to "use the washroom." after like fifteen minutes I went and checked on him. Anyways, he had gotten freaked out, so we went with the younger siblings of the group to go see frozen. I was a little bummed at first, especially after I sat down in the front row and someone behind me spilled their drink over my feet, but damn was that movie amazing. Went back a week later with my family to watch it a second time.

I think the kingdom is named corona because one of the outer crust of the actual sun is named corona (but I'm not sure, I think I read it somewhere long time ago...)

Yes! Iâve been saying the same thing about Florence. Sheâd be a great Rapunzel. I donât know who Iâd cast as Flynn though(Maybe Ben Barnes). Zachary Levi wouldâve been perfect(again), but heâs a bit too old now
I love the message behind the scene of Repunzal grabbing Gothels arm. Sheâs always been strong than her âmotherâ but because of all the abuse she never felt strong enough.
YES!! Plus the imagery of Gothels hand instantly shifting from loving caress to claws when Rapunzal does it, showing the monster beneath.
A small detail is that the King and Queen's lantern has the kingdom's symbol on it (the sun), it seems to be the only one with it while the others are quite plain and it's purpose is to bring her home, and well it did its job! The lantern that is was about to hit the water but Rapunzel saved is the same one her parents let into the sky, it found her. It's such a small detail but also a very sweet one.

The two hardest things to animate realistically in 3D are water and hair. They had to write their own render engine because none of the commercially available ones were robust enough, it took them the better half of a year. They actually ended up modeling Rapunzel's hair with spring physics because realistically her hair would have weighed over 400 lbs (~180 kg). The movie Ratatouille was a CGI marvel at its release due to its own realistic hair physics.

I absolutely love this film, so underrated and hilarious and Flynn & Rapunzel are so great together and are just such great characters as well, Mother Gothel is also a great villain

Truly one of the greatest Disney movies ever. When I saw it for the first time I was genuinely shocked by how good it was
I think you'd have a lot of fun with both "The Emperor's New Groove" and "Hercules". Emperor consistently ranks as the funniest of the Disney animated features. Both feature probably the best and funniest of the Disney villains.
Seconding both of these. Hercules is one of my favourite Disney movies, so damn good.

Fun fact: When in the beginning song "Mother Knows Best" When she says "I Love You" She actually touches Rapunzel's hair.
This is 100% implying the flim makers knew to add a little detail like that because she doesn't really love the girl, but the hair.
this is literally my favorite disney movie ever, i dont get why its so underrated cause to me the stoyline, the songs, the build up and the jokes are better than any other disney movie. My favorite part is definitely when she heals flynn cause its when we realize that her power is within her, not only in her hair. Also her love for him evolved her power, you can see that it was more powerful than ever when she heals him
I think it's underrated because Frozen came out within a year or 2 after and EXPLODED. I never found that to be as good as Tangled though personally.

Ahh, my favourite Disney animation of the digital era. SO undeservedly overshadowed by Frozen and I don't understand why, unless if it's just because 'Let It Go' became a pop hit song. It's a great song, but I'll take 'I See the Light' over it any day, as well as 'When Will My Life Begin' over 'Do You Want to Build a Snowman' AND 'For the First Time in Forever'.

The way they portrayed mother gothel was so well done
1) from the audienceâs perspective itâs obvious all her little comments was gaslighting.. but to someone inside of the situation it might be difficult to see that
2) all of the times she expressed affection to Rapunzel she touched her hair, showing what really mattered to her
3) finally, everyone knows sheâs a bad guy from the beginning obvi, but sheâs still an enjoyable villain because she has a weird charisma to her (which is necessary for Disney villains)

The actress who voiced Mother Gothel, Donna Murphy, has done a ton of broadway and is an incredible actress. The has also been in a lot of movies. She was Doc Ockâs wife in one of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man monies, and she was in Star Trek Insurrection. She is currently Mrs Astor in the Gilded Age.

It probably wasn't the original, but I had a version of Rapunzel that had Gothel have a garden, and when Rapunzel's mother was ill, her dad climbed into the garden for herbs which made her better. When he eventually got caught, they have to promise to give Gothel their first born. Gothel then put Rapunzel in the tower, and eventually finds she was trying to escape and cuts her hair and makes her go away. Gothel then tricks the prince into climbing the tower then pushes him out the window where he falls into rose bushes and gets blinded. He then finds Rapunzel.
Old tales weren't fairy at all. So cruel...

You should not be surprised that Eugene cut her hair before she could heal him. She had promised Gothel she would go with her if she let her heal him, and from earlier in the film, Rapunzel tells Eugene that she never ever breaks a promise. He had no choice if he wanted to save Rapunzel from a lifetime with Gothel.

This came out when I was in high school, but itâs one of my favorites of the ânewâ Disney animations. Although itâs a creepy song in context, I enjoy the âMother Knows Bestâ reprisal. I also like Flynnâs sarcasm annoyance, particularly in the beginning when heâs just trying to get rid of Rapunzel.

i just sat down with some snacks wondering what i could watch while eating and i saw this on my subscriptions. bless.
There is a flower in the "original" tale but it doesn't have magical powers like that. Rapunzels parents are commoners and while her mom was pregnant had a craving for "rampion bellflowers" (earlier versions of the tale its parsley) which is called "Rapunzel" in German. They lived next to a witch who grew some in her garden so the husband stole it and made it into a salad. The witch finds out and makes a deal with the husband that he will give her his daughter in exchange for more of the plant. She does have healing tears at the end tho, because the prince is blinded, but it's never said the magic tears came from the flower, it's more like a generic fairy tale trope with no explanation.
There's also an earlier Italian version of the story where Petrosinella (Rapunzels name in this version) uses magic to escape and fight the witch. The Brothers Grimm are never the originals, they just wrote down existing stories and folklore, and in a lot of cases they added some of the "grim" parts to the stories.
With Rapunzel the Grimms believed the story was of German origin which is why they made the changes to their version that they did, but they were incorrect. The earliest known version of the story is that Italian version mentioned before but the earliest know story about a princess locked in a town and a prince having to climb her hair is Persian. Anyways to end this long essay off it's believed the tale originated as various myths (Baltic, Greek, Irish, etc) where a sun/dawn goddess is locked in a tower. Disney took the flower from the more recent versions and brought back some of the sun goddess inspirations to make the version of the story in this movie.
It was my favorite Disney movie. Rapunzel is a girl boss! Love your reactions.

In regard to your "I don't recall this in the story comments," you were right: this is a largely new story, retaining only the idea of Mother Gothel kidnapping Rapunzel and keeping her in a tower, and a man finding her (and healed by her tears at the end). But in Grimm, she's not a princess and there's nothing magical about her; rather it's a prince who finds her. (And there are further incidents like both kids getting tossed out of the tower, he for interfering and she for getting pregnant, not to mention a whole backstory about her parents, that have obviously been discarded.)
This is one of my tip-tip favorite Disney animated films ever. Its only rivals would be Beauty & the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and Pinocchio. It does just a great job of combining engaging characters, a well-structured story, and great songs. And some of the best voice work ever, especially Zachary Levi (Flynn/Eugene) and Donna Murphy (Mother Gothel).
Every time she shows affection to Rapunzel, she's touching her hair cause that's the part that keeps her alive.
