  • Nigeria gained its independence from Britain in 1960, having been a colony and separate protectorates as far back as 1885, but has its colonial history continued to shape its political present? We dive into the consequences of English colonisation and how it has continued to influence Nigeria.

      The Nigerians of the South fared much better because they ultimately welcomed the British because of all the infrastructure and education they were receiving. To this very day they fare much better as a result of their openness to colonialism. The North suffers because it rejects infrastructure, modernity and education.

    • @h_maina
      @h_maina Před rokem +2

      @@MrJustonce123 That's not true. Northern Nigeria was the center of commerce in west africa before the british came, the arabs travel all the way to Borno State to exchange goods. The north was known to be a center of commerce as the majority of the people there were farmers, the british also used northern funds to drill out oil from the south. Before the 1970s, Nigerian economy depended on agricultural products from the north and south making the economy one of the biggest in the world at that time. The Nigerian economy started to crumble when the government started relying on oil as the main source of foreign exchange. The northern and southern part of the country only exists today as Nigeria because the brits needed a way to move agricultural products from the north to the south and then ship them to europe through the ports of lagos.

    Another type of slave worth mentioning is the Chief Eunuch (known as the Chief of the Girls). He was an Abyssinian slave captured by the Ottomans whose job was to manage the concubines. He was made a eunuch for obvious reasons. People always like to stress that he was black because of their hatred for black people but his subjects were other East European Eunuchs. He became very powerful in royal politics kind of like Varys in Game of Thrones.

    A very good overview. The British like the North as they had experience of Muslim countries in other parts of it's Empire, they liked the way in which it was a very Centralised religion and therefore easy to manage. Whereas in the South the various Tribal religions the few colonial administrators could not really fully understand them, it was simpler to have then covert to Christianity, also being coastal regions the Nigerian would have had exposure to Christianity from their contact with Europeans. The "Scramble for Africa" 1885 forced Britain to merge the various Tribes into one ( Two Southern/Northern) Nigeria this imperfect fit sews the seeds of conflict, partially abated by having a Federal system rather than a Centralised constitution. In my opinion one of the primary issues affecting Modern Nigeria is its dependency on Oil for it's Tax revenue, it represents about 80% therefore the the Government need to be swayed by the electorate desires as their Tax is but a small percentage of the National Treasure.

    The Ottomans had this slavery thing on smash. Like I said, different ethnic groups were suitable for different work. For example, the Mamluk were a warrior class of slave (the sons of East European concubines) that were given military training then manumission (freedom) but were expected to remain loyal. They went on to establish the Mamluk Empire in Ottoman Egypt kind of like the Romans.
    The West African slavery is so shameful because it was the result of intense infighting amongst indigenous tribes. For example the Yorubas raided and captured an entire village in their spiritual motherland Ile-Ifa, the cult of Ochossi were all packaged and sold to the British and the Portuguese in exchange for whiskey and mirrors. These slaves were willing to die to protect their religion and culture to the extent that their masters began to worship the same idols. These idols go wayy back to the Babylonian era under the Assyrians. History just repeats itself.
