    Vande Sangeetam!
To music, I take a bow. It gives us so much, from rejuvenating our spirits and cleansing our mind, to a sense of physical well being and a definite spiritual direction if we choose. Sometime during our life, we need to prostrate before this power. We attempt here to share all that it has given us- Composers, ragas, thoughts on puranas. We also try to look at what we should do, individually and collectively, to ensure that its purity and profound beauty are passed on to the generation next.
Recorded in natural setting in a village Mundaje, Karnataka.

I'm currently listening to a Bhairavi varnam called Mohamana of Ponniah Pillai. Not many people have sung it. It is filled with Shringara rasa completely. The dancer/ composer asks Thyagarajaswamy of Thiruvarur to come and make love. Pretty heavy. Bhairavi is a bautiful raga. Love DKP Amma's rendition of Raksha Bettare. Thank you for this Anna!

Bhairavi raga has power . But I appreciate the courage of Sri Bhimsen Joshi who, even under the threat of the dacoits could sing a song in this raga and enthrall the dacoits.

  • @visalakshik.raman.6278

    Namaste Sir!
I think CarnAtic music students learn more compositions in Bhairavi than in any other rAgA.
The Swarajathi kAmAkshi, Ada thALa varNam ViiribONi, followed by many kruthis and keerthanas.
The song by mahAKavi " thondru niganzhnthathu" is sounds so powerful and energizing.
ArunAchala Kavi's "SwAmi namaskAram, swAmi namaskAram" sung in the very same tune creates so much of pathos. It almost makes us respect KumbhakarNa for his loyalty towards rAvaNa and his unshakable bhakthi towards Sree rAmA.
A popular song "vElavarE ummaith thEdi oru madanthai" used in dance recitals is naughty and takes to task Lord Murugan himself, for making a pretty young maiden waiting throughout the night.
The power of Music is indeed mysterious and lies far beyond the power of mere words.

An exceptional series! As you were saying about an entire concert by Nithyasree in Bhairavi ragam, I remembered an earlier program in AIR Hyderabad (if I remember right) called Eka raga sammelanam of 75 minutes duration. Smt DKP chose Bhairavi and presented a delectable range of songs. That was years back, may be in the 80's.

I recommended this series Vande Sangeetam to my 88 year old uncle and this is what he said.Long back he was listening to a kutchery of a young lad in Chennai and told him that you remind me of my favourite Vijay Siva to which the young boy humbly thanked him profusely and proudly said that he was your Shishya.Deergaayushman bhava.Your yeoman service to Carnatic music leaves me emotional. In one of your episodes you had spoken about Rathnagirishwarar and Aralakesi .Was fortunate to live near the temple in Besant Nagar and visited it almost everyday.God bless you abundantly

Extraordinary exposition and exploration of this magnificent mega Raga Bharavi and subtle nuances and emotions that pervade in the various compositions of the Trinities and other famous composers. My sincere gratitude . An awakening experience. Only 12 episodes. As my late Father used to say of the Maha Vidwan Shri Ariyakudi Ramanunja Iyengar after he had finished singing a flourish of a Raga ' Could not Anna expand the Raga a little more'. Thanks Sir.

Ecstatic experience of tasting different flavours ( அறுசுவை) of Bhairavi. Very happy to hear about my childhood memories, Yaro Ivar Yaro, Engal Thaai. I was very eager that you should not miss mentioning Upacharamu, ViribhoNi and Dikshitsr's Navavarnam in Bhairavi. A brief tour de force on Dikshitar's version of Bhairavi was refreshing. It is like, in any colour there are different shades; skyblue, Oxford blue, MSblue.
    But the core is unmistakable.
    Very Ranjakam indeed🙏🙏.

An artistically clinical dissection of this beautiful Raga and its nuances. Listening to the Sri Dikshithar version of Bhairavi, with its attendant nuance for the first time. Apart from the content which merits a separate description, your range and depth of krithis is a true tribute to Smt DKP & Sri DKJ. Hope your sishya parampara imbibes and continues this legacy,. This series is rocking, the Google monetisation at the start, shows its increasing popularity week by week.

I still remember your description regarding usage of the word bhairavi from the muthuswamy dikshithar kriti chintayama in your panchalinga kriti lec dem. This episode was entirely bliss for me as bhairavi is one of my favorite ragams. Kamakshi swarajathi, Sari evaramma, viribhoni and chintayama being my favorites in this beautiful raga. As a great admirer of Sri Muthuswamy Dikshithar I was pleased to hear an unknown kriti as specified in Sangeetha Sampradaya Pradarshini. Glad that the videos are longer now. We are blessed to hear you share your knowledge and experience with us. Waiting for next week. PS - Hoping for a Margam video on Sri Muthuswamy Dikshithar.

Wonderful information about Bhairavi raga Sir. Great effort as always...Thank you so much. I would like to add here that, others like M.Bhagavathar, S.Tirunal, M.Vasudevacharyar have also contributed immensely to this Ragam. Few popular compositions of Purandaradasar, also other Dasars, one popular composition of Raghavendra swamigal are also tuned in this ragam. However, being such a familiar and a powerful ragam Im sure there would be no composers to mention who has not tasted the nectar of ragam Bhairavi. As you said there is no Mangalam found, similarly i have not found any krithi on Ganapathi in this ragam. While the beginning of Abhayamba Bhairavi sounds like ragam Ghanta because of shuddha dhaivatham but still the beauty of Bhairavi just flows later. That shows the uniqueness of M.Dikshitar. This alone makes any person understands that they are not normal composers but Avathaara Purushaas. Once again Thank you so much Sir. Looking forward to have more insights in the upcoming videos. My Namaskarams..

  • @venkataramannarayanaswamy2833

Re: the anecdote of BhimsenJoshi, VijaySiva has himself conceded
that the Bhairavi of the Hindustani classical is different from our Bhairavi.
The former is our Sindhubhairavi which is so different from Bhairavi and is
used in both traditions as a minor but overwhelmingly sweet renderings.
How can the anecdote be relevant but for the commonness in name?
This is just a footnote for a scholarly but a bird eye view of a most major raga.

An excellent explanation of an elegant ragam. There is a lot more to these ragas than what we hear. Is the ragam beautified because of the power of lyrics or do the lyrics attain eternity because of the ragam in which they are sung and it’s nuances?
A wonderful experience in this episode.
