Attachment horizontal grip +lower rotational recoil +lower vertical recoil +better stability when aiming Actually with a grip and a suppersor there aren’t many things you can improve anymore those two do everything
As a game developer myself talking about #1. To my knowledge bullet drop/decreased range is done on silenced weapons as a balancing mechanic. something that is silent, doesnt appear on radar, etc is pretty overpowered if you can use it at long range. So its not that we got it "wrong" just that we want to keep it fair. Ya hear me?
Zac Ward Subsonic bullets. Typically used with suppressors to actually have quiet bullets(since sound also comes from bullets breaking the sound barrier) by reducing the speed and therefore increasing drop of bullets.
It's not(only) balance issue. Suppressed weapons are best used with subsonic ammo. Subsonic ammo travels at 300m/s, normal travels at 900m/s. So (ignoring slow down, angle of fire and so on ...) if you shoot at target 900m away, supersonic bullet will fly there in 1 second while droping 5 meters. Subsonic bluet will hit target in 3 seconds, dropping 45 meters.
Simple. Guns without a suppressor use supersonic ammo. Guns with a suppressor use subsonic ammo. Supersonic ammo with a suppressor isn't all that quiet as the crack of the bullet will be very obviously a gunshot. Subsonic ammo is much quieter at the cost of bullet velocity (range/damage). There's your answer.
You can use supersonic ammo in a suppressed gun or subsonic in a non suppressed. The question is how does a suppressed effect the bullet. If you’re changing the type of round depending on if the gun is suppressed or not, you’re not answering the question, your avoiding it.
not just "drop" but an over all "low" velocity round equating to sub sonic literally...which means "at distances" you can hear distinctions between shots+hits. 343.2 m/s or 1126 fps rounds. It isnt based on caliber of round or any connotation to size...just if were talkin a pure "silent assassin" type setting...quiet discharge/quiet round intended for covert operations so does it really matter if travel speed is lessened if the targets are going to be typically in a night setting being snuck up on or struck in a unified fashion as a squad. In this scenario were talking about 2 variables noise and muzzle flash.....when were considering that a gunshot could be heard by a whole area vs just who can see it being fired i think we can figure out what has be being done for the better part of 70 years...in covert operations with special forces troops esp the 45acp used in a silenced modded 1911 in wwII...to now nothings changed if anything for the better since now u can use a special grain+barrel implementations to slow down other rounds that wouldnt on their own be sub sonic. Just saying though its only obvious at the speed of 1100 fps that the bigger the round the more stopping power....45. vs 9mm or a 40./10mm all at the same speed i mean its only basic math. Only matters how many rounds you wish to necessitate
In real life? Your gun is harder to handle, accuracy loss, heavier, and makes your gun ultra dirty and supressors are very expensive and difficult to buy
I think the bullet drop and reduced velocity is to represent the use of subsonic ammo. Which although isn't required to use in a suppressed weapon, is still preferred for sound reduction.
The bullet drop / reduced accuracy / reduced damage are added for balancing purposes. The real life issue with suppressors is they increase the weapon lenght making them less practical to handle or putting a short firearm into a holster. In games this isn't an issue since the player just pulls all his guns out of his ass.
well, yeah, that, and that in-game you use subsonic ammo, which does make the bullet fly slower, making the drop more significant and the damage lessened.
Horny Fruit Flies But then again, the ONLY benefit of a supressor is actually NOT a benifit anymore in today gaming standars. Just think about it, the supressor only makes the gun harder to hear, that worked 10 years ago when people played with their crap TV speakers. Now even the most casual gamer has a headset on while gaming and with a headset you clearly still hear and know where a supressed gun is shooting from. Just watch Rainbow Six Siege gameplay, the supressor is USELESS, more recoil, less damage, less range and still people know where you are as soon as you start shooting. Its not even an option anymore. The ONLY game that has made just a bit of justice is CoD Black Ops 3 which made supressors to not drop the damage of the weapon but it was only in Sniper Rifles.
liked the video but when you were talking about recoil your point wouldve been driven a lot deeper if you had a recording of the same gun in slow motion without the suppressor
+Rob Dahm really technically the increase in velocity will not cause more damage nesasarily more pass through maybe actually the lower the velocity and high the weight of the bullet is what increases damage
You can use either, Hiram Maxim, you know.. the guy that invented it? Called it the "silencer" not to mention the largest suppressor manufacturer on the planet SilencerCo. I personally say suppressor just because that's the nomenclature I got used to but either or is correct.
@@maverickcoyote3526 the correct term is suppressor because you can't completely silence a gun. therefore, silencer makes no sense. it is called a suppressor because it typically reduces sound by 14 decibels and hides muzzle flash, not COMPLETELY making the gun "silent". just suppressing
FPSrussia is American. His accent is not legit it's quite the opposite, it's clearly forced. You can Google 'Kyle Myers' and you'll find out he is the actor and the person behind the character 'Dimitri Potapoff' (FPSrussia).
Anyone can pull off a fake, strong Russian accent, also he was born in the US of America. Heres an explanation from an article (he has also covered this shit up himself): 'He got the idea for a Russian accent while working at a car dealership. One of his co-workers was Russian and he took an interest in impersonating his accent.'
Its fucking simple. Video games dont get it wrong, they do it so that it has drawbacks to use it, because otherwise it would be overpowered as fuck.. 🙄
He said that the it's for the balance. He's not telling you that suppressors should be like that in games, he's telling you why it's not realistic so you can educate your dumb ass.
Rob, I found you via CTS-V videos but I appreciate you delving into the firearms world. I have been doing gun reviews since 1999 and hold a FFL and SOT and so a lot of silencer reviews. By the way, HP Maxim patented the device as a silencer. Suppressor is a term that came about somewhere in the mid 80s.
In some cases I've heard of sub-sonic round used in higher caliber weapons for greater suppressing and actual silencing at a certain range, like the new ALIAS rifles, but, sub-sonic ammunition is reported to actually have the greater drop demonstrated in battlefield and call of duty. It still doesn't make sense for soldier's that are expecting front-front combat to use sub-sonic rounds, mostly because it doesn't make sense to quite your rifle in that sort of situation and because their primary use would be to mask where you're shooting from. Besides that, the whole point of super-sonic rounds are to penetrate thicker armor, dampening that in combat would be silly. at least with my understanding of suppressors.
subsonic ammo was only ever used in handguns in WWII in combat. Apart from thus the idea of subsonic is retarded because it is hardly lethal traveling at less than a third of standard velocity
Silencer - The legal definition for a firearm suppression device Suppressor - The technical definition for a firearm suppression device so... who cares ??? reference blog.silencershop.com/silencer-suppressor/
I was thinkin' the same thing. Plus in law they're named as silencers. In this case however, and i'm sure you'll agree. This isn't a magazine - clip argument. Both are acceptable, and if anyone says in that familiar pedantic man tone "well. actually it's called a suppressor..." Shut up.
Well said. No one who ever heard a suppressed weapon of 9mm or bigger ever claimed it was silent. Revolvers cannot be suppressed due to the gas escaping between the cylinder and the barrel. This will be nearly as loud as the weapon unsuppressed. With semi autos even when the propellant discharge has been suppressed, the action of the weapon will still make quite a racket and even if that was ignored it is no where near silent. The sound is suppressed and the device to quiet the weapons discharge is technically a suppressor. Hollywood has everyone convinced that suppressed weapons can be fired next to sleeping infants with out waking them. I call bull shit on Hollywood.
is English your native language? it isnt mine and even i was able to understand him when he said, a suppressor being called a silencer is NOT once of the issues he lists. Come on guys, i get that the attention span of people nowadays dropped to somewhat around 5 minutes at most but thats literally in the first minute of the video...
it is actually the same. Silencers and Supressors are different words for the same thing, even the developers called them "silencer" at some point. Cause it "silences" the shot it does "supress the sound" ... that is the use of it ... and it does that ... And if you wanna be totally correct it is called "sound supressor". So even calling it just "supressor" is wrong. :P
Silencer is basically just the new name for Suppressors, it's why you can still hear the gunshot quite clearly, all it is really meant to do is suppress the muzzle flash(Really useful for sniping at night in a military operation wouldn't you think?). The idea that they silence the gun mainly came about due to tv shows, movies and games.
Respectfully, Mass times velocity does NOT equal the energy behind a projectile. The formula for Kinetic Energy (KE) is KE=1/2mass times velocity^2. Kinetic Energy basically means the amount of moving energy a projectile has.
Muyao Liu Mabye there is something I have not learned yet (I am a pltw engineering student in high school), but I'm glad to see someone else sees some skepticism in his physics explanations.
i'm pretty sure about this as i'm 3 months from getting my diploma but don't take my word for it. When gun powder combust, the bullet is accelerated. F=ma, mass of bullet and a of bullet in barrel. assume a is const, therefore, f is const. now back to the topic, the longer the barrel, the more distance the bullet is accelerated. you know that energy= force*distance. force, as mentioned above, is const. the suppressor provides a longer barrel, thus distance is longer. E=FD1
Muyao Liu I get what you are saying, which brings the question of when you calculate Force=mass times Acceleration do you use the adverage Acceleration through and slightly beyond the barrel or do you use the initial acceleration. I asked my former math teacher and he said you would use the adverage Acceleration. This means if he is correct because the Acceleration decreases slightly as it travels through the barrel the Adverage Acceleration decreases slightly and exponentially but the distance increases. But eventually the barrel will become long enough to make the adverage Acceleration small enough to negate the distance the bullet travels leaving an upside down quadratic on a graph where the x-axis is barrel length and the y-axis is the energy behind the bullet. I'm not entirely sure about this but the problem has been bugging me since I woke up this morning and I had to get it out of my head.
A longer barrel means a longer time for the expanding povder to build pressure behind the bullet and therefore more force to push the bullet this leads to a bigger acceleration. As he said in the video if you have a extremely long barrel the friction of the bullet would be so big that it can not be accelerated any further. So a longer barrel means bigger acceleration and by this a higher velocity. I do not want to be rude or anything but it is written "average" without a "d" ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) in it.
My one gripe about this video: What if game designers just take into account that you'd use *subsonic* ammunition with suppressors? Subs make suppressors more effective at making the gun quiet, and the reduced velocity/increased bullet weight would increase bullet drop and affect the "damage."
+Francisco Roy De Mare I'm speaking about existing games, namely Call Of Duty and Battlefield. If you consider that game developers are aware of subsonic ammo (which they should be) and they take those factors into account then that would explain my points in my first comment. Still not 100% true to life but at least better than was described in the video. For example: -Subsonics are typically affected much more by bullet drop. -Subsonics generate different recoil impulses than standard velocity ammo (more of a thump vs a sharp kick) -Subsonics are worse at penetrating body armor than their standard velocity counterparts -Standard velocity ammo does more damage to soft targets (there are a few good ballistic gel test videos on this) Those are just a few facts I can think of right now, you can draw your own conclusions from them.
Actually, game Designers DO take this into cosideration. If in battlefield you equip a suppressor on a weapon, the bullet speed drops dramatically to around 300m/s. The game forces you to use subsonic ammo with suppressors. Therefore Robs here video is pretty much pointless, except for the recoil. I guess DICE and co decided to not put that in, as it would turn suppressed guns into super-easy-to-use weapons, breaking all game balance. Trading off sound for velocity is a good balance, trading sound AND almost no recoil for just velocity, not good balance.
you may notice that back in battlefield 3 the description of suppressors had this note on them " The Cold Loaded ammo used by Suppressed weapons travels slower and has a shorter range." by cold loaded they mean subsonic
Regarding "bullet drop": Your barrel may be longer, giving the bullet more way to accelerate. BUT: The noise suppression of the muzzle-bang is only one part of suppressing the weapon as a whole, used by special forces. Regular bullets generate a supersonic-bang while flying through the air, allowing bystanders to notice them quite clearly and even pinpoint the shooter. To cancel out that effect, subsonic ("cold loaded" ?) bullets are used to stay below that magic velocity. With the lower velocity and equal bullet mass a higher bullet drop may occur on longer distances. This even disproves your energy thought. IF however you use the same ammunition in your suppressed gun, you won't notice that effect....
Also a lot of people think it’s illegal to have a suppressor in the US. It is not. You fill out a ATF F1 and send in $200 for a tax stamp and then it’s completely legal.
They should try and use the real life negatives like increased length and weight. I hate how in most FPSs there's no weapon collision with walls so walking around with a suppressed sniper rifle in a tight corridor is just the same as walking around with a small SMG (which is made for small spaces/close quarters)
In Modern Warfare Remastered the .44 Magnum's Suppressor had no penalties but had one less in the clip than the desert eagle. (The Deagle and Magnum had the exact same stats other than the ones listed above) Even though this is the case, almost nobody I have ever seen have the suppressor for the Magnum.
Some of turn based games take this factors into consideration. Thats why Jagged Alliance 2 still have quite a large community and still gets patches and mods. Latest version od 1.13 patch makes it even too realistic IMO.
Okay let me explain, why in games a suppressor decreases the damage, whereas in real life it actually increases. The thing is that if a player what's to be less loud or in a way silent he will use a suppressor, but if a suppressor also increased the damage, then it will be a win win situation for the player. What the game designers what is that if the player wants to silent and sneaky that he will have to choose the suppressor in exchange with less damage, but if he what's more damage to kill his enemy quickly then his has to give away the sneaky technique and be loud and vulnerable by giving away his position. So it is to test their decision making skill.
Alright, if you just run a suppressor on a firearm, the range and damage will increase, and you will notice a little decrease in sound. To make a suppressor effective, you use sub-sonic rounds. These rounds hold less powder resulting in less damage, and less range for the perks of a quieter shot. The guns in the video games would likely be shooting sub-sonic rounds, thus why you have the 'silenced shot' and the decrease in range/damage. The title Battlefield 3 states this to be the case when you equip a suppressor, namely, that cold-loaded rounds are being used instead of standard rounds. Thus, suppressed weapons in Battlefield have less range because they are using low-velocity rounds.
Guille That's not my point. My point is that you have no damage in real life. 7.62 goes without body armour right through the body. Why do you think Americans use 5.56? Because Afghan forces for example most of the time don't use body armour.
Boi, suppressed weapons in battlefield are meant to mimic weapons uisng SUB SONIC ammunition. The bullets drop more because their velocity is decreased, meaning that gravity has more time to take effect. This is also why some weapons have a damage penalty, less velocity.
Julian Lawrie A long range rifle isn't going to use sub sonic ammo though, so his analogy of long range shots is correct. Except he did leave out that the add weight of the suppressor does lower the point of impact due to the slight bend in the barrel. This could be perceived as increased bullet drop. In short range firearms sub sonic might be used, but bullet drop is negligible at that range. Sub sonic bullets are normally heavier in addition to slower. So depending on the ratio of speed to weight, the muzzle energy could potentially not change. Also, calibers like .45 acp wouldn't have a "damage reduction" as they're naturally sub sonic, unless it's a +p or +p+ round.
It's called balancing. It's a videogame not a simulator. If the supressors made more noise and did a little more damage why would anyone use the standard weapons? You'd just have a golden eye party running around pew pewing instead of bang banging/pewing
+Agent Ham I know guys that shoot subsonic .308 through 24" rifles ... yes, it's useless for long range but that is also true for BF3 subsonic ammo. Bullet is so slow, that it is very hard to hit anything moving 100m away. That's why I don't use suppressor for sniper class rifles in BF3 ... but you have that option, for whatever is your reason.
Even the .45 acp has more drop.. Let's say that your stock .45 acp is 850 fps out of the muzzle. If you add the suppressor it's going to be like 800 fps out of the muzzle.. So game are in fact right about that.
I'm using one in fallout 4 now. 😂😂😂 Plus I don't let my targets get at an ineffective range when I'm using a suppressor. That's more of a stealth in close quarters thing for me.
If you equip suppressor in BF games it also switches from supersonic to subsonic ammunition, pretty sure it's explained in the description of the items. This means less range, more bullet drop and less kinetic energy.
Finally, someone who admits their love of guns stems from playing video games. Most kids online will say they’ve owned them all of their lives. Also, you will NEVER, ever run into someone online who admits they are an irresponsible gun owner.
But i thought a proper suppressed gun has a subsonic cartridge. Because the sonic crack from The bullet would defeat the point of a suppressor. So wouldn't it be slower?
Garen Olivari that's what you normally do with suppressed guns is shoot it with subsonic ammunition. But you can still fire regular loaded cartridges through the suppressed gun. but you will hear the crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier
that's what the games are trying to portray. like battlefield in which you add the suppressor and the bullet velocity is decreased to roughly the speed of sound. hence less velocity due to the subsonic amunation.
Yeah, but if they weren't virtually silent like they are now in video games, there really wouldn't be a reason to use them, because then they'd barely help stealth. Plus, I love that pew pew sound
Oli Yea I love that sound too, except this is a video about things video games got wrong about suppressors and that is probably the most significant difference
There are, however, some specific designed guns that can shoot like pew pew. I remember watching a documentary about there was a prototype smg that can empty a entire magazine right behind someone and that person never noticed. but in terms of stander issued guns with those add on suppressors, then yeh, it's pretty much for protecting the shooter's ear
The worst thing is killing stealthly people with silencer/supressor. You can hear it. It is not muted. And enemies are like: "nahh, thats nothing" and they should hear the gun going off
The drop comes from the fact that the round MUST be sub sonic. Either wise, the crack of the round would give you away when firing the suppressor, so the round would be slower.
You can, but it would kind of defeat the purpose. I seem to have also heard that there should be some types of suppressors designed specifically to lower the speed to subsonic levels before leaving it.
how does a bullet travel faster with a suppressor when bullets for suppressors are subsonic and are designed to be slower in order to not break the sound barrier
Maskie What do you mean "just no" He's exactly right. Suppressors are designed to be used with subsonic ammunition so that the bullet doesn't crack and the majority of the sound is neutralized.
Maskie no without subsonic ammunition the bullet would still be tremendously loud, there for to get the best results you need a suppressor plus subsonic (subsonic meaning it is slower than the speed of sounds, and does not produce a sonic boom) ammunition. If you do not have both together the gun will still make a lot of noise. All of this would result in less "damage" and long distance capabilities of the firearm equipped with a suppressor.
The colt 1911 uses the browning style of recoil, like most modern pistols. AAC's Ti-rant suppressors use that spring to mitigate the rocking action the barrel makes in order to cycle the gun. The ASAP spring does not help reduce recoil. In fact the opposite. Great video. I too was a little depressed with my suppressor purchase. Still hella fun.
you forgot the most important misconception. the fact that in most videogames you can shoot a suppressed pistol in a room and the guards in the room next to it will not notice. hahah even the pin hitting (without a bullet in the chamber) is loud enough to startle a person and make him question what was that sound, it's clearly impossible to fire a suppressed gun in a room, or outside, and not being heard within a radius of at least 100 meters
Alexandros Nicolaou There is one gun that can be silenced enough to where you can barely even notice that it's been fired. But there's one issue with this: the trigger pull is louder than the shot. XD (If you're wondering, I'm talking about the De Lisle Carbine.)
***** Got the info from a mostly reliable source, (Not wikipedia) but there might still be some exaggeration. Anyway, it's more silenced (Is that the correct way of saying it?) than the Welrod.
ForsakenBacon yes that is a fact, and anything louder than 100dB can't be called stealthy. its a misconception most shooting games have, from the earliest hitman games to the latest fps, they propose that a suppressed gun is so quiet, it can be fired around the corner without anyone having a clue. maybe in a noisy street environment with lots of bavkground noise it can be true, but even then you have to be lucky that something louder like a garbage can falling or a loud car passing by, muffles the gunshot
I like the ideas in this video, but I do have some things to point out. It might be a bit of a long one. While I'm sure other people have stated this already, you should know that your first and third issues are only true if the gun is using standard ammunition with the silencer, which is very uncommon. Firstly, what is typically used is something called subsonic rounds. This is a round with a significantly lesser powder load. This is intended to lower the velocity of the round to, well, subsonic speeds. This means that it goes slower than the speed of sound, because a great deal of the sound that comes from a gun firing is from the sonic boom created by the bullet. This would mean that the bullet drop would in fact be greater, because it would take longer for the bullet to get to its target, allowing more downwards acceleration by gravity. However, this makes your second point far more accurate, as a lower powder load always means less recoil. Your third point about damage is also not strictly incorrect. Yes, the barrel would give it more time to accelerate, but it with the lower powder load, it would not be significant enough to counteract it. This would overall give it less energy, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. An often used round for stealth operations in special forces is a .22 caliber subsonic round. The reason it is used is due to the fact that it has such a low velocity. At close enough ranges (a few dozen meters) it has enough energy to pierce the skull, but not enough to exit out the other side. This causes it to bounce off the other side of the skull, and further tear up the brain, ensuring a quick and quiet kill. In addition, bullets with lower velocities are more likely to remain inside a person's body, causing more damage in the long run. Anyways, sorry for the long comment, but that was bugging me a little. If there's anything I got wrong, please feel free to correct me!
Very well put!!! I may debate the scull penetration at 36+ meters w/ a .22 subsonic or damage done by lower velocity rounds with Hydro static shock being a factor, but those change greatly depending on cal. and bullet type/weight so I'll just call it a good explanation.
+DeadlyEmoAngel xX Yes you can use suppressors with most rifles because .223 is not the only rifle caliber you know? .50 bmg, .338 lapua, .408 cheytac are all heavy bullets that even when moving slower than the speed of sound can cause a lot of damage. Yes using suppressors has its cons but if you need to be silent that's the price you pay.
DeadlyEmoAngel xX I think the most common method of reducing bullet velocity is reducing the amount of gun powder, and even if you are using heavier bullets, the added weight isn't enough to neutralize the, sometimes very high, loss of velocity.
It's funny three years ago I watched this and loved the video and now I have rediscovered your channel because of my possibly unhealthy obsession with rotory engines
i thought BF reason for increased bullet drop was due to "cold loaded" ammunition, less powder as to keep the round at subsonic velocities when you take the supressor....
If you wanna be super scientific his statement at 1:45, while he's not wrong, is inaccurately mentioned. Faster bullets don't drop faster, in fact, slower bullets don't drop faster either (in the case of subsonic ammo). Bullets drop at the exact same rate regardless. It won't go as far, sure, but bullet 'drop' is actually a fixed variable.
To make it clear video game developers gives disadvantage with suppressor to make its advantage of not showing on minimap even. So that gameplay can be balanced.👍🏻👍🏻
what's the excuse for rainbow six siege though? just a bit less sound? ain't worth the cut in damage at all nor the fact you could be using a compensator for lower recoil
So if the silencor reuses the air and make the bullet have more velocity doesn't that make it have more recoil? Maybe when you use call of duty silencers it changes the size of the bullet which lowers the damage
There's another point. Once your vest or helmet being hit by a bullet from a handgun, there's no way you could continue shooting for a few seconds or so. Let alone an assault rifle. The vest will absorb all that velocity from the bullet, convert it into another form of energy and then transfer it to your body.
TheSwedishGuyWhoMadeThisLongNameForNoReasonWithCaps not after 30 or so bullets wouldn't be a problem if it would just be over a long term use but since it breaks so fast it's an issue
Well if you want to talk video games, then it doesn't explain why weapons that chamber inherently subsonic rounds like .45ACP or 9x39mm suffer a velocity and damage drop in games.
Ill explain that pretty quickly, its a video game. video games are balanced for fun of play not realism. They dont want you to have that kind of advantage with no draw backs.
Rarely used but still effective. Wrong, Russian spec ops used the ASVAL chambered for the 9x39mm subsonic round. It's a heavy round, it's effective range is around 400m and can punch through armour. Last time I checked, Russia's military is more than decent.
I'm pretty sure videogames did this on purpose. Because in real life, supressors deal more damage and makes the shots quiet. Video game developers wouldn't want this, because then everyone in the game would use supressors and nothing else. That just makes it pointless to even add an option for no supressors because everyone would just use supressors anyway. They wanted to make a sort of cost for having your shots be quiet, so that not everyone would use supressors in the game. They made it that way so that having your gun without supressors is still a viable option. In simpler words, they wanted it to be balanced.
The reason why the bullet drop is more pronounced in battlefield is that they're simulating cold loaded (subsonic ammo), no crack when the bullet fires means less noise but also less propellent for the round.
Actually, if you call it a suppressor, you are wrong. The word suppressor is not found in US Firearms law. To quote the actual law on them... (24) The terms “firearm silencer” and “firearm muffler” mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication. So, the term silencer IS the correct one. Or muffler. But nobody uses that one.
There's something new we learn everyday & thanks to this video, I actually learned more about gun suppressors than expected. In fairness, I haven't even used a combat gun outside videogames🧠🎞
Velocity in the X-direction works independently of velocity in the Y-direction, so a fasting moving bullet will fall ESSENTIALLY just as fast as a bullet moving at 0 mph forward.
230 gr. FMJ out of a 1911A1, same speed either way. There is no law that says you HAVE to use subsonic ammo with anything. www.businessinsider.com/us-marine-corps-experimenting-with-silencing-every-single-gun-in-an-infantry-battalion-2016-11
essentially isn't the right word, exactly would be the right word. assuming you fire the bullet at a 90 degree angle the 2 bullets will hit the ground at the exact same time
fall, yes. Drop, no. At the same time intervals, both of them fall the same height. But at the same X co-ordinates, a projectile with a higher initial velocity will have fallen less than a slower one.
For one, subsonic loads of supersonic rounds are almost never issued with suppressors. Military and police will almost always run standard supersonic loads through their suppressors. For two, the suppressor will still increase the velocity of the subsonic round.
to think that the same guy today making gun videos would be the guy to build history in itself (the 4 rotor) just boggles my mind keep the work up rob I doubt you will see this but for everyone else to see I love cars and I absolutely respect what Rob has done building a full-on time attack car basically in a garage with nothing but himself and some friends that just insane great job rob keep the work up!
The reason they take off the range in call of booty and battlefield is so the weapons are balanced if not everyone would use the suppresser and it would be pointless
The ACTUAL reason takes a little bit more than a dismissive attempt to explain. When any standard projectile exits the barrel of any firearm designed to fire it (for example the common 9x19mm parabellum cartridge fired from an H&K USP9SD), it makes not only the boom that you hear from the gases escaping and heat balancing, but also a sonic boom, or more like a cracking sound. The suppressor can rid the firearm of the "boom" sound, but you have to use "cold loaded" ammunition, which is loaded with less gunpowder and a heavier projectile on order to remove the sonic boom and still ensure the firearm cycles(in semi or fully automatic firearms). Often suppressors are also used "wet", pouring any kind of liquid available to the operator into the baffles that increases the effectiveness of the suppressor. This guy here in the video doesn't say anything about different loads. THIS is why in these games adding a suppressor takes away some of the damage and given more drop, because the projectile is given less velocity. These games don't say anything about using "cold loaded" ammo or whether the suppressors are being run wet or not, it's really simple to switch to a suppressor in a game, but not even close to easy with a real firearm if you actually want to gain the benefits of using a suppressor in the first place.
You're thinking of subsonic ammo. "Cold loaded" is not a term I've ever heard used anywhere, but a round that's supersonic can still be "cold loaded" according to you, which doesn't get rid of the sonic boom at all. In any case, video games reducing damage over this IS due to a balancing issue and not your given actual reason. Because a 5.56 subsonic round is still 60-80 grains. Whereas a 45 ACP is 230 grains. Both travelling at 300m/s, the 5.56 would have less than half the kinetic energy of a .45. So if this was the actual reason for reducing the damage, then rifles should have half the damage of your USP/1911/FNX45 suppressed or unsuppressed.
+Michael Zhang as far as I'm aware, "cold loaded" ammunition is just another name for subsonic ammunition, and was originally what I was told subsonic ammunition was. You do give a hood point about the grain weights, but think about this instead, as you mentioned, a subsonic 5.56 rifle round weighing in at 50-60 grains does in theory have less energy than a .45 acp handgun round, but what you haven't looked at properly yet is bullet penetration. A handgun round might in theory have more energy, but the 5.56 rifle round would keep it's energy longer than the .45 round. also looking at that, why do you think the military uses rifles instead of pitols? Simply because rifles have greater range, better armour (or flesh) penetration, and keep their energy and velocity because of the rifling of the barrel and the design and shape of the projectile. Also bare in mind that a subsonic .45 acp round fired from any weapon, requires the suppressor to be used wet, just to bring the noise level down to a safe for ears level, because no matter what you do, increasing the load ALWAYS increases the noise. .45 acp subsonic ammunition is one of the loudest pistol rounds you can get, but admittedly does pack a hell of a punch. In saying that though, it might have a lot of stopping power, but lacks the penetration to boot. So, you aren't exactly right in saying that most pistols would deal more damage than rifles, had all games based damage on energy solely, maybe, but you overlooked penetration.
Jup, pretty much. Imagine a video game where suppressors would only give benfits. Pretty much everyone would run around with these. Sometimes its not about realism but balancing the game. I mean, its still a video game, right? But this video should be shown to all the "i play a lot of CoD i know how guns work" kids.
That is absolutely true. That would be more realistic. But then again, they should also add that surpressors wear off up until to a point where they eventually "break". If you wanted R6 to become more realistic. :)
Damn rob this video is why I subed to u. I can’t believe it’s been 2 years already and who knew at the time I was subing to a car Chanel lol but I’m so glad I did.
Bullet drop in video games is not because of the suppressor. In one game (i think bf3) they pointed out that bullet drop is added due to low velocity bullets used when you put on a suppressor on your gun for making even less noise and for better reliabilty of the suppressor itself.
Yes but the velocity is increased as friction is not created in the barrel...therefor the bullet will be shot further...and at ranges where bullet drop Velocity is the range or capability of the bullet reaching its target
I think the reason why there’s more bullet drop in bf3 is because they’re using subsonic rounds as well, as you would if you’re really trying to make your gun quiet
Harambe true but you can make the supressor as loud as it should be and if you're wearing decent headphones or headsets you can track them down by sound. also i guess you could reduce effective range so it has the same damage, but capped at a certain range.
Harambe that being said. While using a silencer in a game and getting the jump on someone, the silencer shouldn't be so weak that your opponent can turn around and out DPS the flanker like in so many games.
This is false. The damage is lower because if you want your weapon to be truly suppressed, you have to shoot subsonic rounds. Subsonic rounds are subsonic! (Lower velocity than the speed of sound) therefore, have less "damage"
so perhaps games should change the facto that a suppressor doesn't silence a round just reduces it's noise. so instead of not showing up on the map, it should be fainter or show up for a shorter duration. if we want realism at least.
Definitely understand. And developers understand. But they have to add pros and cons to using the attachment. For example it’s “quieter” and you don’t appear on the enemies map. If the suppressor had less noise. More velocity. Less recoil. And all that everyone would use it all the time. So it’s all a balancing thing.
The spring system is called a Nilsen device and without it, you won't load the next round on many pistols. Also, the first round through a suppressor is always louder unless it is a wet silencer. This the reason when on operations, you usually piss into the silencer so the first round does not have the louder "crack". *tips from a machinist who makes suppressors.
There are some more things about suppressors as well, such as a loss in efficiency with sustained firing and the need for sub-sonic ammunition to get the full benefit of suppression. I have a friend who works for www.a-tec.no/ In Norway it is considered rude to shoot without a silencer as it damaged your hunting dog's hearing and annoys the neighbors. The technology in suppressors in Norway is miles ahead of most countries.
For all of these comments saying that games must be balanced and that this video is pointless... guys he didn't say that the games MUST be like real life he just gave us some differences between real life and games.btw i didn't knew that a suppressor could increase damage i always thought the opposite ...
It could decrease damage in an odd way. As with too much energy the bullet may pass through the person too cleanly. Rather than break up and cause more damage to the persons body.
I think "damage" is less relevant in a real battle. The ability of a bullet to pierce through obstacles or armor on the way to the human target is more important. A soldier with an arm or leg wound can't just run around and function as normal indefinitely like in FPS games. Any non-superficial bullet-wound needs immediate medical attention just to stop the bleeding. Taking a single bullet essentially removes the person from battle. Insta-kills are not really necessary except for extremely close proximity fighting, and even then it's preferable to aim for the chest rather than the head.
real life needs to be balanced

Subsonic bluet will hit target in 3 seconds, dropping 45 meters.
can't hear ya mate, can you say it again? :(
MusicIs l0v I laughed so hard
Fucking thank you for saying that.

Kosmonaut Even the military does not use subsonic ammo as often as you may believe.
not just "drop" but an over all "low" velocity round equating to sub sonic literally...which means "at distances" you can hear distinctions between shots+hits.

So why ever remove the suppressor? It seems like it just has benefits and no drawbacks.
In real life? Your gun is harder to handle, accuracy loss, heavier, and makes your gun ultra dirty and supressors are very expensive and difficult to buy
David Guest Why would the accuracy be worse if the barrel is technically longer?
more weight to keep steady away from your hands
that's why in games they give it drawbacks, so it balances the game (advantages/disadvantages)

Horny Fruit Flies or the gun just magically sticks to their butts or thighs
That could easily be the balance tho: silenced weapons have increased sway and take a little bit longer to switch to/from
well, yeah, that, and that in-game you use subsonic ammo, which does make the bullet fly slower, making the drop more significant and the damage lessened.
Wrong the only game that does it justice is ARMA and that's because it is a military simulator.
Seeing MW2 gameplay almost brought a tear to my eye.

+Rob Dahm really technically the increase in velocity will not cause more damage nesasarily more pass through maybe actually the lower the velocity and high the weight of the bullet is what increases damage

Next video, Rob turns all his guns in to 8 rotor silent 3000 hp submarine.
The drop in BF3 is supposed to be attributed to using sub-sonic ammo as to not cause a sonic boom.
That's why the bullet velocity always goes down in the stats as well.
I could see that on a pistol, but subsonic ammo out of a high-power rifle?
You would probably never be able to get it to cycle reliably on subsonic. Those bolts are massive.

Oops! I made the same point. I don't think I was as kind as you were.
Hunting way predates the turn of the century and the machine gun were u high watching tells of the gun silencers predate the self contained bullet
They make the bullets drop because you usually use subsonic ammo in a suppressor for them to be quite
"its a supressor not a silencer"
"3 THINGS Video Games get wrong about Silencers."
Gotta get them views
And also not everybody knows what a supressor is. Silencer is the more common one i think
is English your native language? it isnt mine and even i was able to understand him when he said, a suppressor being called a silencer is NOT once of the issues he lists.
Kinetic Energy basically means the amount of moving energy a projectile has.
as an engineer, i also find his physics explanations cringey. but his explanation about KE is not wrong but not right either.
This guy sounds so passionate and like he's having fun how can you dislike something like this?
Meanwhile in postal 2, they had cats as supressors .....
My one gripe about this video: What if game designers just take into account that you'd use *subsonic* ammunition with suppressors? Subs make suppressors more effective at making the gun quiet, and the reduced velocity/increased bullet weight would increase bullet drop and affect the "damage."
Wouldnt work for balance/fun unless the game focusses on stealth (hitman?).
+Francisco Roy De Mare
I'm speaking about existing games, namely Call Of Duty and Battlefield. If you consider that game developers are aware of subsonic ammo (which they should be) and they take those factors into account then that would explain my points in my first comment. Still not 100% true to life but at least better than was described in the video.
For example:
-Subsonics are typically affected much more by bullet drop.
-Subsonics generate different recoil impulses than standard velocity ammo (more of a thump vs a sharp kick)
-Subsonics are worse at penetrating body armor than their standard velocity counterparts
-Standard velocity ammo does more damage to soft targets (there are a few good ballistic gel test videos on this)
Those are just a few facts I can think of right now, you can draw your own conclusions from them.
Subsonic ammo in a long-range rifle?
IF however you use the same ammunition in your suppressed gun, you won't notice that effect....
.45 are usually sub sonic.
thanj you, i was going to comment (roughly) the same
And since in game theres no ammo change when equiping the supressor...
Francisco Roy De Mare well, you are dead when you change so it's be hard to see the guy change the ammo
pistol rounds are generally subsonic anyhow so he's not wrong just ignorant to the differences between rifle rounds being suppressed vs pistol rounds.
Also a lot of people think it’s illegal to have a suppressor in the US. It is not. You fill out a ATF F1 and send in $200 for a tax stamp and then it’s completely legal.
Crazy as it sounds, PUBG got suppressors almost right.
in video games they need to put some negative aspects to a supressor/silencer. otherwise everybody would use it.
benjamin admiraal exactly
Wow, people still play that game? I remember it being too complex for me cause I was still a kid back then, but I really liked it.
Makes sense
Varad Kakodkar Why does it do more "damage"?
*Filoppow* came to comments without see the video? he explain that...
Guille That's not my point. My point is that you have no damage in real life. 7.62 goes without body armour right through the body. Why do you think Americans use 5.56? Because Afghan forces for example most of the time don't use body armour.
Calling a SILENCER a “Suppressor” is equivalent to calling a WHEELIE a “manual” 😂
This is a side of Rob I never knew existed, and i love it
Boi, suppressed weapons in battlefield are meant to mimic weapons uisng SUB SONIC ammunition. The bullets drop more because their velocity is decreased, meaning that gravity has more time to take effect. This is also why some weapons have a damage penalty, less velocity.
Good explanation. Not only short but correct.
Julian Lawrie
A long range rifle isn't going to use sub sonic ammo though, so his analogy of long range shots is correct.
I even use supressor in rpgs lol
😂
I'm using one in fallout 4 now. 😂😂😂 Plus I don't let my targets get at an ineffective range when I'm using a suppressor. That's more of a stealth in close quarters thing for me.
cant stop laughing omg !! XDDDDD
GEP gun
TheAwesomePcGaming: they can keep the LAM's we can afford us a GEP gun....lolz
Just saying, but I'm no expert.
Garen Olivari it's very complex to answer this question comprehensively, and I don't know all of it, but in most cases yes.
The military uses supressed rifles with super sonic ammo all the time. More than subsonic most likely.
You forgot noise, in games it sounds like a tiny "pew pew" which is not at all what it actually sounds like
well he somewhat mentioned it but this video really lacks a demonstration.
"pew pew"!!
And enemies are like: "nahh, thats nothing" and they should hear the gun going off
Dang, Rob.....you done come up a long way. From video games to giving the Hoonicorn all it wants. Props, yo.
The drop comes from the fact that the round MUST be sub sonic. Either wise, the crack of the round would give you away when firing the suppressor, so the round would be slower.
Lovell Hawes no you can shoot a suppressed gun without subsonic rounds
In games, at least Battlefield specifically, the rounds are subsonic.
You can, but it would kind of defeat the purpose. I seem to have also heard that there should be some types of suppressors designed specifically to lower the speed to subsonic levels before leaving it.
Lovell Hawes The round does *not* have to be sub-sonic; never has, never will. Sub-sonic is just the optimal choice.
+Zoltan Csikos correct my good sir.
how does a bullet travel faster with a suppressor when bullets for suppressors are subsonic and are designed to be slower in order to not break the sound barrier
just no
suppressors stop the bang by suppressing the gas that sends out the bang
Maskie What do you mean "just no"
He's exactly right.
All of this would result in less "damage" and long distance capabilities of the firearm equipped with a suppressor.
straight up lies
The colt 1911 uses the browning style of recoil, like most modern pistols. AAC's Ti-rant suppressors use that spring to mitigate the rocking action the barrel makes in order to cycle the gun. The ASAP spring does not help reduce recoil. In fact the opposite.
Great video. I too was a little depressed with my suppressor purchase. Still hella fun.
Intro sounds like you just beatboxed into a fan
you forgot the most important misconception. the fact that in most videogames you can shoot a suppressed pistol in a room and the guards in the room next to it will not notice. hahah even the pin hitting (without a bullet in the chamber) is loud enough to startle a person and make him question what was that sound, it's clearly impossible to fire a suppressed gun in a room, or outside, and not being heard within a radius of at least 100 meters
Alexandros Nicolaou There is one gun that can be silenced enough to where you can barely even notice that it's been fired. But there's one issue with this: the trigger pull is louder than the shot. XD (If you're wondering, I'm talking about the De Lisle Carbine.)
Alexandros Nicolaou Even with a suppressor, a gun would still be louder than 100 decibels.
***** Got the info from a mostly reliable source, (Not wikipedia) but there might still be some exaggeration. Anyway, it's more silenced (Is that the correct way of saying it?) than the Welrod.
Try imagining someone pulls the trigger behind you but not actually firing. That would be loud. Loud enough to hear.
DeadlyEmoAngel xX They are not faster stupid kid, cold loaded ammo has lower velocity. your comment doesn't make any sense.
DeadlyEmoAngel xX I think the most common method of reducing bullet velocity is reducing the amount of gun powder, and even if you are using heavier bullets, the added weight isn't enough to neutralize the, sometimes very high, loss of velocity.
+21josepollo21 amen
The ironic part is that in the title, it says "silencers"
Also said he didn't mind the distinction.
Probably to get people who know suppressors as silencers to click on it.
It's funny three years ago I watched this and loved the video and now I have rediscovered your channel because of my possibly unhealthy obsession with rotory engines
i thought BF reason for increased bullet drop was due to "cold loaded" ammunition, less powder as to keep the round at subsonic velocities when you take the supressor....
it is
this is correct.
I don't think anyone's debating that bullets drop at a rate of 9.81m/s^2, just his inaccurate point in relation to the game.
Ah ok, I read your comment as if you were saying BF's reasoning was sound against his point.
INFINITE DEV and no fire indicator; you can't see where the rounds are coming from and they don't leave trails behind them
dude.... do you even play Siege? you still don't know the benefits of having a suppressor? lol.... dafuq?
INFINITE DEV I agree I would much rather have a compensator than a suppressor in siege
So if the silencor reuses the air and make the bullet have more velocity doesn't that make it have more recoil? Maybe when you use call of duty silencers it changes the size of the bullet which lowers the damage
I almost forgot that you did some gun content I mainly know you from your builds. Love it
There's another point. Once your vest or helmet being hit by a bullet from a handgun, there's no way you could continue shooting for a few seconds or so. Let alone an assault rifle.
The vest will absorb all that velocity from the bullet, convert it into another form of energy and then transfer it to your body.
The thing I hate most about suppressors in video games is that THEY DON'T HAVE THEIR OWN HEALTH BAR, METAL GEAR!
Suppressors can break though.
and suppressors can fly with the bullet if its not perfectly placed..
would have become OP and boring, so nerf hammer!
Dayz Standalone have this feature
TheSwedishGuyWhoMadeThisLongNameForNoReasonWithCaps not after 30 or so bullets wouldn't be a problem if it would just be over a long term use but since it breaks so fast it's an issue
Well in Rock paper scissors...
William F. Petty Paper
I forget how damn smart Rob is
They usually have it like this in games to make it fair
The entire idea is that the suppressors are paired with subsonic ammunition. (Less velocity, more drop, no sonic boom, etc)
Subsonic ammunition is rarely used, and never at all in countries with a decent military. It's mostly a range toy or convenience type thing.
So? We're talking about video games.
Agreed!!
Nah
Blazing Gamerz are you stupid

Mass x Velocity is momentum, not energy. Energy (kinetic) is (1/2) x Mass x Velocity^2
Technically you are correct, but It's still a linear relationship so his point stands.
Technically you are wrong, the relationship is not linear with velocity, it is quadratic.
Yup your right,
The relationship is not linear for the case of energy.
Supercharged Leprechaun he never said it was mass x velocity dumbass
Well in my school...

Why is everybody comment "well..."?
This is what I’m asking too
I hope video game companies see this video and fix the mistakes they made in the future, I also had these issues with video games.
There's something new we learn everyday & thanks to this video, I actually learned more about gun suppressors than expected. In fairness, I haven't even used a combat gun outside videogames🧠🎞

Nyaruko-san bruh it's high school physics. not that complicated
Subsonic ammo: less velocity = more bullet drop and less "damage". There ya go.
In some cases, lower velocity can cause more damage - bullet imparts more of its energy to the target instead of travelling straight through
Velocity in the X-direction works independently of velocity in the Y-direction, so a fasting moving bullet will fall ESSENTIALLY just as fast as a bullet moving at 0 mph forward.
What about subsonic bullets? Its important part of silence shouting. Such a bullets have less speed and as a result less energy.
So, you aren't exactly right in saying that most pistols would deal more damage than rifles, had all games based damage on energy solely, maybe, but you overlooked penetration.
call of booty lol
lol call of booty i knew that word by myself
Video games put -range on suppressors in game because of attachment balancing.
Jup, pretty much. Imagine a video game where suppressors would only give benfits. Pretty much everyone would run around with these. Sometimes its not about realism but balancing the game. I mean, its still a video game, right?
But this video should be shown to all the "i play a lot of CoD i know how guns work" kids.
exactly
hahahahah

i play roblox call of duty
i know everything about gun
and suppressor has -ange
becase

That is absolutely true. That would be more realistic. But then again, they should also add that surpressors wear off up until to a point where they eventually "break". If you wanted R6 to become more realistic. :)

Bullet drop in video games is not because of the suppressor. In one game (i think bf3) they pointed out that bullet drop is added due to low velocity bullets used when you put on a suppressor on your gun for making even less noise and for better reliabilty of the suppressor itself.
Wow ... impressive!
I like when people do there research
+Anthony Dixon their*
Mario Cardenas thanks for that
Yes but the velocity is increased as friction is not created in the barrel...therefor the bullet will be shot further...and at ranges where bullet drop Velocity is the range or capability of the bullet reaching its target
Well In Club Penguin......

That shit still relevant?

Kråze R.I.P
I think the reason why there’s more bullet drop in bf3 is because they’re using subsonic rounds as well, as you would if you’re really trying to make your gun quiet
I just cried with you a day ago over UPS losing your clutch and then I find this. Dude.. what the..?
The silencer in games has the damage nerfed because if it didn't, it would make it op. Same damage plus not coming up on the map= bad news
Harambe true but you can make the supressor as loud as it should be and if you're wearing decent headphones or headsets you can track them down by sound. also i guess you could reduce effective range so it has the same damage, but capped at a certain range.
Harambe silencers don't really do much damage reduction in videogames since the damage is slightly reduced
I don't need a silencer, I have my backhand for that.
purestress2 *SUPPRESSOR*
purestress2 fuck yeah
purestress2 thats what a fucking 6inch blade is for son!
i prefer a longer blade
purestress2 I got a pillow
Definitely understand. And developers understand. But they have to add pros and cons to using the attachment. For example it’s “quieter” and you don’t appear on the enemies map. If the suppressor had less noise. More velocity. Less recoil. And all that everyone would use it all the time. So it’s all a balancing thing.
Momentum is Mass * velocity. Kinetic energy is 1/2 Mass * Velocity^2
+kickinthegob banned guns.

For all of these comments saying that games must be balanced and that this video is pointless... guys he didn't say that the games MUST be like real life he just gave us some differences between real life and games.btw i didn't knew that a suppressor could increase damage i always thought the opposite ...
spad 911 Totaly agree, you deserve more likes on this comment.
It could decrease damage in an odd way. As with too much energy the bullet may pass through the person too cleanly. Rather than break up and cause more damage to the persons body.
Well the comments are sharing their views they arent criticising the video theyre just saying why video games are like the way they are
I think "damage" is less relevant in a real battle. Insta-kills are not really necessary except for extremely close proximity fighting, and even then it's preferable to aim for the chest rather than the head.
spad 911 Arma 3 with a lot of mods look like real life
This was actually one of the most interesting things I've ever watched on you tube
