Knee Up vs Knee Down in Paintball - Which is Right?

  • There's clearly a mix of opinions on which knee should be up while kneeling during paintball, so let's see what the movement specialists think. Should the inside or outside knee be up? Find out what Strength and Conditioning coaches Ben Crane and Paddy Gleason (NXL Pro!) think about the mechanical advantages and disadvantages in this video...
Things I forgot to clarify b/c I was trying to keep this short:
    - I greatly appreciate the feedback I got on this topic and it definitely evolved my opinion to think more globally about this pros and cons that both positions offer
    - Because of the mechanical advantages of the inside knee down, I would say it's more "ideal", but as fellow coach Paddy Gleason says: sometimes it's going to make sense to have the inside knee up, and that's completely OK. Train both, aim for "ideal" when possible.
    - Another reason the inside knee might end up as your upward one is because it's the forward leg when braking, so if you're quickly running to the far edge of a bunker and you plant your foot to stop you, you'll end up with the inside knee up. In the same scenario if you're planning to shoot the nearest side of the same bunker, you'd brake with your forward leg, turn away from it, and end up shooting with the inside knee down. Again, this position is going to be the most comfortable because your bodyweight is supported directly beneath your center of mass, saving energy and giving you more range of motion so it's most likely going to be the preferred position to train.
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have questions, input, etc!

From my expirience you need to master both stances, same as you train your right and left hands. Pluses for knee down on shooting side you alredy told but pluses of knee up is next: 1. If you know how to play both you dont need to switch them at all. 2 you can go up and down and not loosing balance ( try to stand up and keep the line staight from both stances and check with is more stable) 3 You will make faster move to the side witch you are shooting and if your knee up (cuz that leg will be your main and push you) Sorry for my English

I believe you are correct on all points. One thing that you didn’t mention, is that if your non-marker side is posted, it allows you to push off to make your next bump up the field. If your marker side is posted, you won’t be as efficient in your movement. Good stuff!

I've always thought thought that you want the knee up from the opposite side that you're planbing to move next. That let's kick off from that foot

I have always played knee down on shooting side. I keep my knee down and draw an imaginary line down the edge of my bunker and it keeps me tight against the bunker. For me it’s easier to shoot that way.

I’m confused on what he means by inside and outside. Seems like his inside is his outside and outside is inside to me

Good question, I'm using inside/outside in relation to the side of the bunker we're trying to shoot. In that context, the knee closest to the lane is "inside", the knee farthest from the lane is "outside", but I know where you're coming from in that my "inside" knee is "outside" outside of the bunker. So it obviously depends on if we're speaking in relation to the bunker or to the lane we're shooting. I should probably start using the bunker as my reference point in that conversation since inside/outside stays the same no matter which side you shoot - good feedback!

@playbetterpaintball is typical to call the side we are shooting the outside. The side protected by the bunker is the inside.

There is a wrong answer. Shoot out of the bottom corner of the bunker with the knee up. You cant, you have to take the extra second to put it down. BUT If the knee is already down, it opens up the range of motion and get the drop on your opponent. Main shooting side knee should be on the ground, always.
