  • Iraq's Death Valley: This September 2007 report from SBS Dateline follows American soldiers in their attempts to find insurgents in Diyala, and the difficulties they face every day.
    Subscribe to Journeyman here: www.youtube.com...
"We're gonna kill the people that need to be killed and be frickin' decent to the rest of them," states Sgt. Maj. Edgar. "There's no in between." The plan is simple. Airborne troops go in at midnight, followed by a heavily armed convoy. But the roads are littered with IEDs and progress is painfully slow. It takes 15 hours to travel 30 km. The soldiers arrive exhausted but there's no time for rest. "We know the insurgents are here." They search every house, checking residents against a blacklist of known insurgents. Then they mark villagers' hands with their house numbers. "He cannot wash it off and needs to stay around this house for the next 24 hours," orders one soldier. "If he goes to a different part of the neighbourhood, I'll arrest him." The 50°C heat is taking its toll on the soldiers. One starts throwing up from heat exhaustion and two others are given a drip of saline solution. "The heat's pretty crazy. Sometimes you just can't drink enough." All the men have had their tours of duty extended by at least three months. They're exhausted and being stretched to their limits.

Blessed your heart ❤🇺🇸 I was in Baghdad Iraq 05-06, 08 and it was pure carnage, a slaughter, ied’s, vbied’s everywhere. As soon as I stepped foot there the unit getting replaced had so many casualties and lost a lot of soldiers due to daily mortar attacks on base, ied’s and vbied’s on patrol and convoys. It was brutal on them. Their faces were unforgivable. You could see the pain and horror on their faces. I spoke with a couple of them and listened how frustrated, angry, traumatized, and sad they are about loosing so many friends. They told me words of advice and warned me of the dangers of camp Striker. I made it out alive twice 🙌🏼🙌🏼Thanks to Jesus ✝️

Our government needs to change. The way things are looking it won’t change anytime soon. I gotta feeling the current leaders and president are gonna drag us further into the Ukraine war especially since things aren’t going the way they thought. I wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually send American boots on the ground there. I know the are already talking about sending a patriot missle battalion, a battalion to train the Ukrainians in Ukraine and a battalion to help guard the embassy and those troops. Al these politicians need to look at war as a very last resort and only to do necessary in situations like WW2 or 9/11. All this nation building crap that we hv been doing needs to end. Our government needs to worry about fixing our problems here like our drug epidemic, the homeless problem, and the crime problem instead of being the world police.

It was a big change from the traditional m81 woodland pattern, so there's divisions amongst new privates who signed up for the futuristic ucp camo look and old grunts who loved woodland camo, which it ended up being the trend for people to just hate on ucp camo(although it does kinda look bright when brand new). this camo is really underrated.

Because of the surge, about 28,000 American troops were recalled in 2007, some from the IRR, and others from retirement. I was one of those. At the time, I hadn't seen active duty for 13 years, so it was like being a recruit again. A lot had changed such as the terminology, not to mention my MOS, 73C. Many of us were overweight, out of shape, and had to be retrained by drill sergeants for four weeks at Ft. Jackson. It was quite an interesting experience.

I did 3 tours in Iraq. What he's wearing is a nomex flight suit. It's a one piece suit that's fire proof. Some units authorized soldiers to wear these on missions. You could be less burned by an explosion. Because they don't melt to your skin. Also standard issued gloves were nomex. The nomex suit is also more comfortable to wear under body armor.

I honestly do not think the current young men of the 2020's have the strength or mentality to do what these men did. Not saying all, speaking generally. All these people saying we should have been there, it was for oil....a coward always has an excuse, remember that. Saddam and his regime inficted hell on the people of Iraq. And it was the right thing to do for those people and our allys in the region. This is the period of the surge. A 12-month deployment turned to 15-month deployment. And by this time in the war, some soldiers had already 3 or 4 deployments, then got stop-loss, where the government won't let you out at the end of your contract. Why, because less than 1% of Americans serve the country in all the military branches and less around 1% of that is infantry. What ticks off most veterans is the lack of appreciation. Kneeling for the flag at major events, what the Kardashians are doing, or who's dating justin bieber. As a veteran, i will NEVER encourage my children to serve in such a way.

Man, fuck -- and I cannot say this enough, fuck COL Southerland. 1st Cav came in unprepared, ignored the advice from units who had been on the ground doing recon and collecting intel for months. His troops, although some were very experienced and tough, largely undisciplined. His failures to prepare, train, listen, and plan based on existing intel got a LOT of his troops killed, and a lot of ours as well. His reaction to the shock of sudden casualties was not to get out and get aggressive in pursuing the enemy and keeping them on their feet, instead he retreated all units but a few combat outposts to FOB Warhorse and de facto gave up the battlespace. And while those units pulled back and gave AQ free reign throughout Baqubah, us attached units from other brigades took over more and more 1st Cav AO until our own AO was 3x the size it should have been.
I can forgive a lot of things, but I cannot forgive negligence.

Arabs are proud people. If i see, like the american soldier (9.00 min) take place on the couch without invitation, ordered the owner of the house to sit down in front of a camera or his family, nobody had to wonder about so much resistance. The man is loosing his face. If the soldiers had more education about the arabic culture, their job where more easy and the deathtoll on both sides where so much lower. But the inventors of the lie about iraqi chemical weapons had no interest in the people in the land or their own soldiers, they send them half around the globe to secure the oil and gas for western companies and private profit. Some americans die and some get more rich, the classical division of work.
